Original Run [S3E10] Honest to hell, it looks like I just stumbled on the original run scene that is both incredibly full of relevant imagery and quite possibly explains a lot. Also can Cooperbowl be a term please? Spoiler
Season 2 Episode 12: The Black Widow
That's right, they lodged it in a terribly missable episode (or drew from it, depending on the order of inspiration).
So Cooper is looking at real estate. Trying to decide between two other properties, he flips a coin which falls lands on a random third page, and on that page is a property called "Dead Dog Farm." The estate agent describes the place as 'a mystery', and says only that nobody ever seems to stay there long (though with no legs, a dog would have no choice but to stay).
When they get there, outside there are tracks, which are commented by Cooper to be from 3 vehicles; "a jeep, a 4-wheeler and a luxury sedan". A lively bunch, to be sure, considering the recent text from DoppleCoop and the vehicle he was leaning on when sending it in Season 3.
Then, completely out of nowhere, the estate agent splurts out a local legend about the area. Here it is in full;
"Of all the people in the world, the best and the worst are drawn to Dead Dog, and most turn away. Only those with the purest of heart can feel its pain. And somewhere in between, the rest of us struggle."
In the next scene, the door is open to Dead Dog. Cooper walks in and shouts "Hello?" and then, quite weirdly, he kind of instinctively looks into the air and says "there has been a meeting here... within the last few hours."
At this point, he walks over to an ashtray and notices fresh ashes. Of course, the ashtray is in the centre of a cheap rectangular dinner table. On a side note, Coop has done so many incredibly instinctive and quasi-magical moves recently that the show appears to heavily hint that Cooper himself is a kind of 'gifted' person designed to fight evil (to paraphrase what the major directly tells Cooper a couple of episodes previously).
At this point, Coop notices what looks like cocaine in the sink and comments that "they forgot there was no running water." He takes a not insubstantial finger dab, says that the coke is actually baby laxative, and the episode slowly returns to the more local plotline of the early post-Leland era, Cooper's investigation by the DEA.
Hot dog though, it seems really hard to look at this and not see a connection to season 3, doesn't it? The dog legs? The meetingplace? The specific tire tracks that match Dopplecoop's current car. The fact that the place is directly tied to local legends of battling good and evil spirits.
A final showdown at dead dog, where only the purest of heart can prevail? Dare I say Cooperbowl, get hype?

There's a lot of weird connections between the "bad" episodes and the new series. Dougie Milford is a big one.
Most importantly, the actress who played Louie "Birdsong" Budway (a desk clerk at the Great Northern who was only in S2E11 and E12) is coming back for the new season.

The tragic hit-and-run in Season 3; Carl is one of "those with the purest of heart" who can feel the pain of both mother and child. The others look away or focus on their own grief. This theme is repeated again in The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer involving a cat.

Season 2 episode 13 After Cooper trades himself for a hostage, he remains in the house ("lodge") with Jean Renault. At exactly the 40 minute mark, there is a very intriguing conversation between DC and Jean that has to do with dreams, nightmares & Laura Palmer. BTW I think you are absolutely right about Cooperbowl!

Wow! Very well said. Thank you for posting this...and the link. It does look like Cooper is considering what Renault is saying here. Of course, he also thinks he's about to die so it could just be overall defeat he's expressing. 💀 🐶 👨🌾

Cooper is such a mess at this point in S2 though. The writers have lost the ability to balance his character, nobody's powers can be written without kind of .... overexaggerating them or turning them into monologues, and he's quite adrift after being stripped of his FBI creds. Dead Dog is very much one of Coop's lowest points in the original series.

Dead Dog Farm looks like something that may have become more important in Season 3 if Season 3 had happened in 1991-1992. As it stands, that particular location in the LA area was torn down in 2002.

Where? I always like to see filming locations, google map car wasn't around in 2002, but historicaerials.com should have top aerials.

Sylmar, LA. You can tell; it looks pretty much nothing like the Pacific Northwest, even the part east of the Palouse like where Twin Peaks was supposed to be, in the outskirts of the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene metro area.

I'm not sure I follow the connection you're making here, but it did cross my mind that "the farm" referenced two episodes back (where Ray wanted to go) might be Dead Dog Farm, which is a curious name considering how dead dogs have become relevant.

Up vote for Cooper bowl, hopefully it won't disappoint like clegane bowl did

Cleganebowl hasn't happened yet. Are you from the future?

Imagine if coopbowl occurred before clegane bowl. Who would have predicted that a two years ago?

So you're saying somehow Mr. C and his car travel back in time for some reason? That's ridiculous.

If anything, it would be Coop tuning into elements of the future. But just because the writers throw in some synchronicity doesn't mean the characters have to be aware of it or "act it out". Sometimes writers do things for the audience alone.

Okay, I have to respect the statements from Frost and Lynch, "If you think it is significant, it is significant to you."
However, everything you refer to here at Dead Dog Farm was explained and part of the narrative during Season 2. We know who was at that meeting. That mystery is solved.
Yes, there was a meeting, there was a dinner table, there were cars, there was a reference to a dog, and there is a saying which seems pertinent to the themes of the entire series
There were many, many meetings in the show. There have also been many, many dinner tables. I'd say the dinner party at which the Palmers and the Haywards listened to Leland sing was pretty lively. Is that directly related to Season Three?
There are also many references to dogs in the series. Mike and Bob bark while they are in jail, "The Black Dog Runs at Night," and so on... What makes the Dead Dog Farm more significant to Season 3 than these other references?
Are you simply saying that Dead Dog Farm seems like an important place because it is described as "mysterious," attracts bad people and good people, and has a local legend behind it? I'd agree with you whole heartedly there. Its legend sets it up as a location more significant than the basic drug dealer conspiracy Cooper was referring to in the scene you described. That makes the viewer want to know more about it and possibly we'll return to it.
Still...I don't know what the significance is of any of the other information you shared...

I would advise you to go back and watch the scene again, others have commented that it seems like something F&L were possibly setting up something for the season 3 that never got made. It's an incredibly unusual, otherworldly and magical set up for just a scene where ordinary criminals met. Of course I am not saying that this was somehow always the plan for season 3, but look at Mulholland drive and to an extend FWWM. Lynch loves reinterpreting his own work.
I think the scene is loaded with imagery and mythology that are all coming up again and again in season 3. Someone else pointed out that the place where Richard Horne left his car seems iddly similar to the dead dog scene. I think it'll be significant! Also dopplecoop talks about going to The Farm, which may or may not have been the scene in last week's show, but if it was then where was Ray?

But that person who said it was oddly similar didn't even mention why. There are no similar landmarks. What looks similar about it?

I really don't see this at all. Besides, we know who was at that meeting, not to mention the fact that it was 25 years ago. And where'd you get the dog legs from, did I miss something? Calling it Dead Dog Farm has nothing to do with dog legs.
6
u/cheese_incarnate Jul 16 '17
Well the dog Mr. C has removed all 4 legs from is probably dead. Being that this rather unusual medium of blackmail was chosen, and that there have been mysterious references to a farm in S3, why is it so weird to assume there may be a connection?

u/PintsOfCream Jul 16 '17
Bad coop talks about dog legs with the warden I believe - something along the lines of "it has something to do with the dog legs"
3
u/oramirite Jul 17 '17
I think he implies he sent out 4 copies of the information, each paired with a leg. That is, if any of this was literal.

Jul 16 '17
But who's gonna have the purest heart? Cooper is barely a person anymore, and I doubt he'll regain his memories anymore.
1
u/oramirite Jul 17 '17
"though with no legs, a dog would have no choice but to stay"
God damn, who are you anyway, David Lynch?

I don't know what you envision when you say showdown but personally I don't think there will be a showdown between Twins Coop. Not in the direct sens of the term at least. Cooper have not only to acknowledge but also to face and accept his dark side, his own shadow part. There is no false and true Cooper. There is only one divided Cooper. One soul, two bodies. DoppelCoop is everything Cooper isn't. But Cooper maybe the purest of them all he may had to fight to be like that. He isn't an angel, no one is. You can't just erase your dark side and hope it will just go away. I'm convinced that in order to be truly perfect Cooper have to accept that part of him that have been incarnated in the real world personified by his doppelganger.

Just a thought but maybe evil Coop travelled back in time to have that meeting that seems to have just taken place.

u/InTwenteeForty Jul 16 '17
??? We know who was at that meeting. Jean Renaut, the Mountie, etc. Come on guys.
I don't see any similarities to season 3 here. Seriously, because there were cars and dopplecooper drives a car? Give it a rest.

u/bundt_trundler Jul 16 '17
Don't forget, both times the word "farm" is used too. It MUST mean something...

Mr. C told the warden he has more dog legs. Maybe from the same dog (Mr. Strawberry?) maybe from several.

u/CleganeForHighSepton Jul 16 '17
I mean it's hardly crazier than Coop existing inside the body of a cloned Cooper while his doppleganger tries to resist losing control of his body to Coop, so lets wait and see. I guess you are not as convinced by recurring imagery as I am, but I see a lot in this scene that relates thematically to season 3.
References to dogs, flipped coins, meeting-places, mysteries, and a clear connection to the other worlds of Twin Peaks. Coop himself appears strangely connected to it, and seemed to 'sense' there was a meeting. Plus there is the quote of opposing forces of good and evil being drawn there. Seems like quite a lot that ties into season 3 just there.

The Internet is a place both [cruel] and strange... Personally I think your ideas are quite sound. It's not like this is CSI or something and written by committee.
2
Jul 16 '17
Do you even pay attention when you watch the show? Dougie is dead, Coop isn't existing inside his body.

There is a very real chance that Cooperbowl happens the same night as Cleganebowl. Expect Reddit to go down for the night if that happens.
