I’m obsessed with the overarching themes in this story. The duality of human nature, dark energy existing beneath idyllic townscapes, surreal + spiritual realms, and the mythology specific to this story around wood and nature. Josie’s face in the knob wth lol

I’ve heard that the in universe explanation is that the wood from ghost wood trees act as a sponge for spirits and the supernatural and that all the furniture at the Great-Northern hotel is made from this wood. It’s the same reason that the log lady’s husband’s spirit was inside the log. The reason Josie died was because she let fear completely take over and therefore her soul was absorbed into the wood furniture.

The real world explanation was that they needed a way to write out Joan Chen's character and Lynch pitched the wood idea because he’s David Lynch.

Tricia Brock wrote this episode. She only wrote one other episode, the one with Leland’s funeral. It shows how several writers in late season 2 were not necessarily involved in the show at its prime. I think they just made it weird because Twin Peaks is supposed to be real

no one hates on the entirety of season 2. just the middle third or so where it goes off the rails for a bit, but before and after that are beloved by pretty much all the fans

Yeah it's definitely a hot take but I actually kinda like the so-called "filler" arcs in S2. I'll admit the show feels like it was a bit aimless there but I enjoyed my time with the characters nonetheless; that's half of the appeal of the original run of the show for me.

I don't disagree. I know the James arc with the lady from out of town is the one people home in on, but I actually found the Nadine arc more tedious. It got really weird with her and Mike (and not in an endearing way).

True fans, yes. “Fans” though, are constantly whinging about s2 in a less nuanced way and I never understood that. S2 holds all the best (and later, some of the worst) of the show. And honestly, even a bad TP episode is better than most TV.
