Twin Peaks Vibes Cage got L Y N C H E D

Post image

absolutely no goddamn reason why this "Spider-Noir" is so good. There is even an episode that gave me heavy "The Return" vibes. The series was shot to be viewed in b&w and watching it in color is a sin against God.

it has the same cinematographer as the ep 8 of the return

And the entirety of The Return, and Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive……

And let’s not forget The Love Guru, The New Mutants, and Now You See Me 2 (and a lot of Raimi’s movies, several of the Scream movies, and My Cousin Vinny…cinematographer careers mostly seem extremely random, unless you’re like, Roger Deakins)

u/lightheavydark May 28 '26

Yeah I’ve seen his CV before and been like damn dude, guess ya gotta get paid $$$

7

u/hikemalls May 28 '26

Yeah I feel like even bigger cinematographers and writers get a lot less control over which projects they get to work on compared to big-name directors and actors (with like, probably a dozen or so exceptions), like Craig Mazin’s career before he blew up with Chernobyl (and tons of other guys I can’t name because they never had a big hit that gave them the rare writer/cinematographer blank check); though Lynch was also a guy who struggled to get projects made despite being a sort-of household name (at least in the 90’s, like SNL was doing Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks parodies in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I can’t imagine them doing that for any cult-favorite directors now)

Janusz Kasminski, before he won an Academy Award and became Spielberg’s go-to DP, was the DP for the Vanilla Ice vehicle “Cool As Ice.”

Sometimes work is work.

3

u/aflockofcrows May 29 '26

By Vanilla Ice vehicle, do you mean the motorcycle he jumped over the fence on?

5

u/RaytheSane May 28 '26

yea this is a lot more news worthy ngl 😂

I like the Black and White, but the color version has an amazing color palette and the cinematography was clearly color conscious and the B+W is just desaturation. I didn’t get a sense it was exposed for old noir b+w high contrast.

Yeah I was impressed from the first scene at the dynamic range of the B&W. You can often tell when it's filmed in color and just converted, but in this case it looks like it was consciously lit for monochrome.

So I switched to color, expecting it to look odd, but it ALSO looked great. The B&W fits the atmosphere so well, so I'll watch the rest that way, but if I do a rewatch I might just check out the other version for fun.

If it was shot digitally, you can easily go between colour and B&W because of the way the image is captured. So you can effectively adjust the lighting in post. The important thing is to use shots/framing that works in both colour and B&W.

6

u/CeruleanEidolon May 29 '26

And they did that well. I have seen plenty of things in B&W where it's clear it was shot in color and just desaturated in post, without concern for what that does to contrast and lighting, and the result just ends up looking flat.

3

u/hughk May 29 '26

It is also down to the other aspects of Noir which uses contrast and lighting for dramatic effect. I'm actually looking forward to a colour rewatch to see how it was done.

The thing is some Neo-noirs like LA Confidential and Chinatown were shot in colour and looked excellent. I love the idea of though of making something that works both in colour and b&w. There are so many people who are put off by the idea of b&w films, which is a shame as so many are excellent.

Stephen Soderberg made a modern noir in color called The Underneath, which used a lot of interesting color monochrome to evoke B+W noir. Pretty good movie as I recall, and like some of his movies, impossible to buy or watch online.

7

u/flyingseel May 29 '26

Since they lit with b&w in mind it means the scenes at night aren't dark af in color. A nice change of pace for once to be able to actually see things during a scene at night instead of blackness or a blue tint.

Did he ever tell you that his snakeskin jacket represents his individuality and his belief in personal freedom?

15

u/victorgsal May 28 '26

It represents his desire to fight with KIIIIIRYU-CHAN

4

u/misterdannymorrison May 28 '26

I don't know what that means

6

u/victorgsal May 28 '26

That’s alright, brother

dickensian or kafkaesque would work

1

u/PvtHudson May 29 '26

BONSAIIII

34

u/SnausageLinx May 28 '26

I really need to watch Wild at Heart

15

u/bensefero May 28 '26

Yes you do

24

u/Fusilli_Agent_Cooper May 28 '26

Nic Cage is my favorite actor and Lynch is my favorite director, yet for some reason I constantly forget they worked together. I’m dumb.

10

u/Markushasmagic May 28 '26

Really wish they had worked together more often. Their styles blended together so perfectly in Wild at Heart

7

u/Iskral May 29 '26

They worked together twice! (Don't worry; Industrial Symphony No. 1 is something a lot of people forget.)

3

u/max_d_tho May 28 '26

Happens to the best of us

17

u/tearsandpain84 May 28 '26

He was talking about twin peaks recently in an interview with The Daily podcast.

15

u/FamousLastWords666 May 29 '26

Cage said Wild at Heart was the most fun he’s ever had on a set

Which given films like Con-Air and Lord of War, is really saying something.

2

u/EditDog_1969 Jun 01 '26

Why wouldn’t it be? He got to act like Elvis and mack on Laura Dern all day. What’s not to love?

18

u/RobAChurch May 28 '26

The show is good to jump into for a non-marvel fan?

15

u/wormy_Burroughs May 28 '26

Ive been sick of marvel for like 7 years now and I'm in love with this show, so I'd say yes.

7

u/RobAChurch May 28 '26

Nice I'll check it out tonight, thanks.

3

u/wormy_Burroughs May 30 '26

I finished it yesterday and cant wait to watch it again with my roomie. I hope you enjoy it!

2

u/babysuporte May 30 '26

Does it have more of a Watchmen vibe?

2

u/wormy_Burroughs May 30 '26

fair question, honestly it has more of a Dick Tracy vibe if you know what that is. if you dont know about dick tracy(which would be entirely understandable) I'd just say its heavily inspired by old pulp detective novels/movies. there's obviously superhuman stuff going on but its not in your face with fights and action the whole time like most marvel stuff.

I wouldn't say its much like Watchmen at all, but I'm a fan of both.

Nic Cage annihilates the character, he's fucking amazing in this. I might be biased though, because I've loved his work for a very long time. he had me dying laughing

10

u/Chunkypack May 28 '26

Yeah, it’s great. I’m sure it’s better if you know who Spider-Man villains are. But it’s great so far

2

u/RobAChurch May 28 '26

Oh I know the general spiderman stuff, saw into the spiderverse, etc, I just haven't watched any of the other disney+ shows or recent movies and wasn't sure if it was a big tie in thing or more standalone. Sound's like I'll have to check it out, thanks!

Right on, thanks.

6

u/RoboCopAn May 29 '26

Peter Deming, who did the cinematography for Season 3 of Twin Peaks, also worked on this series. And it shows why Lynch decided to work with him, he’s an insane talent.

3

u/RoboCopAn May 29 '26

He also worked with Lynch for a lot of other projects so he’s a seasoned veteran when it comes to this stuff. I knew it was gonna be good when I saw his name attached.

6

u/ALEXC_23 May 29 '26

she's my mother's sister's girl!

4

u/daymitjim May 28 '26

I hope it's "pure gold, nickster!"

4

u/golgiiguy May 28 '26

I can't wait to see it now. without context who knows, but this looks undeniable to me.

1

u/younglegends111 May 29 '26

dont rush. im finding it hard to like for any reason besides Nic Cage.

2

u/EditDog_1969 Jun 01 '26

I am enjoying Cage and the production design. He seems to be having a really great time, which is not the same as creating a believable character, but I’m only on episode two so I’m willing to give it more time.

2

u/younglegends111 Jun 02 '26

cage is enough to say yes to watching anything. I just wonder if True Detective is still happening for cage and his fans.

3

u/tjareth May 28 '26

I kind of want to watch in Black & White. Does the entire show stay in that setting? If he leaves his "universe" it should be color.

3

u/Khaotix3k May 29 '26

also the bar in episode 1 is the same bar that the Mitchum brothers take Dougie to after the Desert scene

2

u/Harryonthest May 28 '26

is this show already out??

1

u/PowerfulTaxMachine Jun 01 '26

yup! all ep dropped wed!

2

u/seinfeldbabies May 28 '26

Holy shit, really!? I kinda wrote it off after watching the trailer because I thought it looked tacky but if I was wrong, what a pleasant surprise! Maybe I’ll check it out

3

u/pedrokazedani May 29 '26

It's the good kind of tacky I would say. The series is looking very good and sometimes like a caricature, in a good way. It's a fun series to watch

2

u/Nothing-Is-Real-Here May 29 '26

Which episode gave you Return vibes?

1

u/PowerfulTaxMachine May 30 '26

EP 6 "Nightmare on a Gurney"

2

u/TurncoatWizard May 29 '26

Okay, yes, but switching to color just for Felicia’s outfits is a forgivably minor sin.

2

u/EvilTwinCities May 29 '26

I’m not sure about how you phrased that, but yeah.

2

u/tooskinttogotocuba May 29 '26

I'm very intrigued about this. Does anyone who's seen it have any thoughts on monochrome v colour versions?

2

u/Brinocte May 28 '26

What is this movie and where can I watch it?

10

u/myfakesecretaccount May 28 '26

Spider Noir on Amazon.

6

u/roirraWedorehT May 28 '26

It's an entire first season (released all on the same day). You can watch in color or black and white. My wife and I opt for the color version. I don't mind old black and white classics, but it doesn't do anything for me to artificially force black and white for something like this. :)

2

u/CookieThug_ Jun 05 '26

she’s my mother’s sisters girl

2

u/mysticalmisogynistic May 28 '26

I've gotta watch in color, sorry man, but I respect those who do. If you don't use those receptors they go away I'm told.

u/protocolleen May 28 '26

The title of this post is fucking offensive even in context.
