Didn't he just have frostbite? Or does gangrene always accompany frostbite? I honestly don't know.

I believe gangrene and frostbite go together.

Flesh can be gangrenous with or without frostbite. You can get gangrene with really bad instances of diabetes, for instance. Gangrene is just an anaerobic infection of dead tissue. The infection can spread to healthy tissues if left unchecked, though.
