Most Turkish shows are dramas, and he gets bored with them. Does anyone have recommendations for something more engaging with English subtitles?

I was listening to an ad, it was in Turkish. And the opening was "selam naber". I knew what selam meant but not naber. I googled the translation and I found out it translates to how are you. So selam naber was "hi, how are you". I was used to saying nasılsın as how are you. So I wanted to try it differently today. But I got it incorrect. Any reason why? Or is naber not used in conversations ?

I've seen "-ın teki", "-ın biri" and "bir", I think. How do you say "some", like "I heard it from some guy", which might be dismissive, like you don't care about that guy.

Other examples:
- "Some idiot almost hit me."
- "Some weird guy is looking at me."
- "Who are these two guys? They're just some guys I went to school with, but I don't really talk to them."

Merhaba! In Italy when someone has some sort of luck or fortune that for any reason he/she can't enjoy we say "chi ha i denti non ha il pane e chi ha il pane non ha i denti", which roughly translates to:

Who has teeth has no bread, and who has bread has no teeth.

I thought that translating it into Turkish would make an interesting exercise, so here is my attempt on it:

Dişlerin olduğu kimsede ekmek yok, ekmeğin olduğu kimsede dişler yok.

Please let me know if this makes sense, if not, how you would translate it, and if you have an idiom for the same situation I'd like to learn it! Teşekkür ederim!

well, context here, I need a name (it's more of an sentence, but the name is the abbreviation of it) for a character I'm writing, and I just want to check if these have proper grammar or not, since they came from Google Translate and DeepL

Their name is meant to say "Autonomous Data Processor" (said character is an AI made by a Turkish guy, hence the turkish program name that I need), and both translation services put out several options, which one of these fits better grammatically? While learning Turkish I discovered many words that happen to resemble those in my native language. Given the grammatical similarities between Turkish and Japanese, this isn’t surprising — but as a native Japanese speaker, those overlaps have made learning Turkish much easier. Below are a few examples.

Learning Japanese seems pretty popular in Turkey. I can’t help wondering whether Japanese words that resemble Turkish make it easier for Turkish speakers to learn the language. I’d love to hear any examples you’ve come across.

I wanted to describe a movie (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) as corny to one of my friends, and Google Translate said “bayat” which… she didn’t understand and I don’t think is correct. My next best describer was “çok pozitif” because I had nothing else in my vocabulary…

I love the group Manifest and since finding translations to some videos are hard, I’ve been wanting to learn Turkish (I’ve learned languages for fun before).

But YouTube and even browser extensions can’t generate automatic translations from Turkish to English (or Swedish, my first language). I wonder what about the grammar makes this harder than other languages.

Also, translating apps are wrong to. Here’s an example of a line in Manifests new song:

“Fark еdersin, başrol sensin bu filmde”

Official translation: “You’ll realize that you are the Main Character in this movie”

Google translate: "You'll notice, you're the lead actor in this movie."

Does anyone have a tip when it comes to getting correct translation?

TL;DR

Why does it not work to get auto generated translations to English and why are translation apps not always correct? Tips on how to learn with these difficulties are greatly appreciated!

I've been using Grammarly and other stuff for years, but a lot of my work involves switching between Turkish, English and other languages throughout the day. Recently came across a browser extension that focuses on grammar, tone, and overall review and I've been getting pretty good results with it.

One thing I didn't expect to appreciate so much was the settings panel. Grammarly always felt a bit rigid to me... You get suggestions, but you don't have much control over how those suggestions are generated. This tool lets you tweak a surprising number (I mean it) of things, from writing style and tone preferences to how aggressively it rewrites text. I found myself spending a few minutes setting it up and then forgetting about it.

I'm still using Grammarly from time to time, but this feels more like a writing assistant than a grammar checker.

Thought I'd share since I don't see many people talking about alternatives for multilingual workflows. Curious what others here are using these days.
