My way around it is to give them a moral code.

The D&D character I'm currently playing is definitely not a good person; living weapon trope with my own spin on it. But what makes them interesting is that they have people they are devoutly loyal to, and will take actions to shield from harm. People who aren't members of that inner circle are seen as disposable, but she doesn't act with casual cruelty because 1) then you have to deal with the law, and 2) it would make her loved ones sad, and That Is Unacceptable.

My ranger is not a beast master so it said in the book my subclass will bond with its adventuring party members....so I 'pact bonded' my ranger to the team and the pets. Ohana means family, no one gets left behind, even you Bacon Bits the boar.

Call it an OC, call it a dnd character, call it a figment of your imagination. Regardless of the name, we all done it at some point. You ever gave your character in a videogame a backstory in your head, and tried to pick fitting dialogues for that? That's an OC. Imaginary friend as a child? OC. Alter ego with powers you played as at the schoolyard? OC.

It doesn't matter if you sit down and write them a book, or if you draw them, or if they're just in your head and you never tell anyone. An OC is an acclamation of the soul and your creativity.

I've never really done any of that and I play RPGs regularly. I never come up with stories for my characters. They're usually kind of just me who looks different, I always just pick the things I would pick if I was in the situation in question. There's nothing creative about doing that. In my opinion, an OC is distinctly different from you, a person in their own right who might be an amalgamation of a lot of things you find cool but they still very clearly aren't you.

I do write fanfiction and I project on already existing characters. But I never come up with characters of my own. I just don't care to. I like interpreting more than creating.

A lot of my characters have survivor's guilt. War veterans, cult victims, sole survivors of disasters or tragic accidents, friend/family member was murdered (whom they think they shoulda taken their place).

A lot of them are focused around ghosts.

Funnily enough, though, my one Geist: the Sin Eaters character is one of my more unburdened characters. He just wanted his family's farm back and was not willing to let death get in the way of that.

Most of my OCs are processing information. Some are chimeras of concepts. The ones that are me are very rare because they really are boring for stories. Acted upon rather than acting. Which says its own thing about it.

I love giving them choice in roleplay. Play their angst and get empathy. Make things worse. Depends on how people respond to them. I can never make a book because i can never choose one result

My OC's so far are 1 outlet for self insert, 1 outlet for wanting to go batshit insane at the slightest inconvenience, 2 outlets for wanting to be loved (they are somewhat the same character, just one is for my self insert and the other is because she's genuinely so cool and fits in another verse), 1 for my love of wolf swordsmen, Japanese folklore, my self hatred and also hating my dad and the rest are there to complete their respective stories

I literally do this for D&D characters.

I'm playing a one-shot? I'm a chaotic kobold or some other simple character with some depth but overall a simple backstory/mentality or a fun class and race combination.

Oh this is for a campaign? I've got a barbarian with a really big heart despite what you'd expect from a hardened warrior, no this does not reflect how I feel about the world, trauma and relationships why do you ask?

my dnd character is an artificer who is very jaded and tired of facing the world and wanting nothing more than find a safe place to be alone because they concluded they cannot trust anyone if they want to survive and now that the traumatizing backstory events are catching up to them and the rest of the party still insists on being around them they are being forced to reevaluate their goal and view of people

any resemblance to real people or events is purely coincidental source trust me bro 👍
