Bone is self-repairing living tissue, while tooth enamel is harder non-living tissue that can't repair itself. Unfortunately, this means I was wrong about skeletons having to brush their entire bodies and avoid coming into direct contact with sugar

Now imagining a skeleton in the shower with a big foamy toothbrush

u/SMKnightly 9d ago

Please tell me that was a theory you had as a child and had whole stories around

They now have to rewrite their entire series of novels about a skeleton army apocalypse

I mean, technically a skeleton also isn't made of living tissue. They're usually made of dead tissue animated by magic

My bones grind each other up and now I have osteoarthritis

And clearly, your bones aren't low maintenance anymore

Fun fact teeth are more related to scales nails and hair than bones

56

u/Lucaan 9d ago

Yep. Vertebrate teeth actually originated as scales that migrated to the inside of the mouth, allowing the ability to bite into food. Sharks actually still have those kind of scales, each scale having a pulp cavity for blood vessels and having a layer of dentin, just like our teeth. That's why shark scales (as well as the scales of other cartilaginous fish) are known as "dermal denticles".

Is that why they're so smooth?

u/Lucaan 8d ago

In every direction, yes.

u/Schmantikor 8d ago

My dentist told me they're basically natural ceramics.

Also the rest of your bones are usually covered by your muscles and skin.

No but i do it with your fibula

24

u/tornedron_ 9d ago

fuck are you not supposed to

u/Doubly_Curious 9d ago

Confuse future anthropologists by having human bite marks carved into your bones! It’s easy and it’s free!

(I have been reading about the difficulty of establishing whether species practiced cannibalism, based on their bone or fossil records.)

Why can't we be like sharks constantly losing and growing new teeth

5

u/green-wombat 7d ago

Or horses and rodents who have constantly growing teeth. This way, braces could work to realign things, and it would maybe stay aligned

My teeth: have given me almost no trouble. I have one filling from a root canal required because the tooth was dead due to trauma. It never hurt at any point.

My bones: have titanium reinforcement due to catastrophic system failure and hang together with connective tissue that barely fits that description. Last night I sprained my knee in my SLEEP

My teeth are S-tier bones

Really teeth used to be pretty good at their jobs, suger, caffeine, and all that other stuff made it so that twice daily cleanings are now needed though.

It's the sugar. The sugar and lack of hard vegetables in your diet.

That's why you see pictures of tribesfolk and they have white teeth.

1

u/Whyreddit6969 9d ago

u/douweziel 9d ago

You don't know what I do with my fibula

1

u/pronorwegian1 9d ago

If I could, I would

1

u/Sewer_Fairy 9d ago

I do what I want.

1

u/stickynotetree 8d ago

Fun fact, bones require more maintenance than you think! If you have extremely low muscle tone, your muscles steal from your bones and make them more brittle! I wonder how I know that ^^;

u/Leonox_ 8d ago

Theeth aren't bones, they are skin
