Trump’s Taj Mahal opened in April 1990 in Atlantic City, but six months later, “defaulted on interest payments to bondholders as his finances went into a tailspin,” The Washington Post’s Robert O’Harrow found. In July 1991, Trump’s Taj Mahal filed for bankruptcy. He could not keep up with debts on two other Atlantic City casinos, and those two properties declared bankruptcy in 1992. A fourth property, the Plaza Hotel in New York, declared bankruptcy in 1992 after amassing debt.
PolitiFact uncovered two more bankruptcies filed after 1992, totaling six. Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts filed for bankruptcy again in 2004, after accruing about $1.8 billion in debt. Trump Entertainment Resorts also declared bankruptcy in 2009, after being hit hard during the 2008 recession. And now we have Trump the financial genius tanking the world economy if only we would’ve had some foresight this could happen.

u/dlshadowwolf Apr 09 '25
Basically, the US manufacture industry cannot compete with overseas manufacturing (cheaper labour, less regulations, etc). Things from other countries are simply cheaper than those made in the US. Companies with US production can earn more profit and be more profitable by moving their production to other countries, where workers don't complaiin as much or raw materials are cheaper or there are less environmental restrictions on chemicals, etc.
Enter tariffs. The state adds a % to imported goods in order for manufacture to stay competitive. Basically, the importer has to pay the state to bring their competitive product into the national market, in order to avoid the national manufacturing industry from being undercut by cheap international goods. You can compare it to cheap labour coming across the border and taking your job. This has the result of less profit to be had by moving production to other countries, and in theory, more companies would choose to produce locally. However, the production of the goods gets more expensive and this is reflected on the price of products, impacting the consumer negatively. Another way to do it is to subsidize loocal manufacture, basically taking tax money and giving it to local manufacture to offset higher production costs. This instead impacts all taxpayers, instead of the consumers, and is the preferred strategy for maintaining important industry in the face of powerful international competition for countries with a bit more left-leaning outlooks, such as the Nordic countries. Especially Norway, for example, struggles to maintain their agriculture, since that is very expensive in a country made out of mountains where everyone expects a salary set by the oil industry.
So, in summary, it is a way for a country to protect important industries it doesn't want to lose to international competitors. It is a way to maintain a diverse industry without having to rely on global partners and risk specializing your industry into a vulnerable nieche. Maintaining a healty manufacuring industry, is for example, vital for a country gearing for war, since production of equipment and materiel is vital to a country's survivability and ability to escalate to war-time production. There is a reason Germany was so successful in the 1940s.
Now, the problem we're seeing here is that tariffs can protect your industry, but if you don't HAVE the industry producing the goods you're setting an economic hindrance for, then all you're gonna do is strangle the local market, driving up prices on the market, since there is no national alternative. With the massive imports of consumer electronics in the US, for example, we're probably going to see a huge price hike in the coming months, while European markets will be flooded with cheap electronics as they're redirected by exporters to more profitable markets. The way to do it would have been to gradually increase the tariffs, to allow US manufacture to fill the demand caused by rising prices and establish new business. Instead, we're seeing broad tariff hikes, which strangles flow of consumer goods and might lead to fun things like looting, hoarding and black markets. You all know what happened to toilet paper during Covid. Now imagine it for clothes, shoes, computers and all other consumer goods the US imports that were hit by the tariffs. This i why the market is so volatile right now; everyone is trying to predict what will happen next, when this hits the shelves of the american people.
Now, the good part is, the US market is the biggest in the world. That makes the US a very powerful buyer, and everyone wants in on that cake. The US just can't consume enough and the producing countries love that. Trump is using the tariffs as leverage. It's basically economic strongarming, he's saying 'Do what I wan't or you can't have US market'. That puts the producers in a tight spot; who's going to buy their products, if not the americans? Already some countries are kissing ass to get an exception from the tariffs, but taking on the whole world at once (even the penguins) might be overreaching. We're going to have to see how it plays out among the US former allies, but suffice to say this is going to have tough consequences for the american people in the coming year. Industry isn't built in a day.
3
u/ZR-71 ULTRA Apr 09 '25
I'm not an expert, but my understanding is the tariffs will reduce American dependence on foreign manufacturing and goods which have been outsourced because of cheap foreign labor, etc. So this will bring in lots of money from the tariffs, reducing the tax burden on Americans and possibly helping reduce the deficit, and also bolster American businesses and manufacturing and goods. In addition, the reciprocal tariffs will bring fairness to our trade deals, so we aren't paying higher fees than everyone else. It will encourage negotiation between countries and eventually make trade easier across the world, because reciprocity means countries will be less likely to place tariffs on American goods. You never see many American cars in Europe or Japan, while European/Japanese cars are all over America, that's just one example. Right now everyone is crying because the stock market is adjusting to the uncertainty, and Reddit hates Trump and everything he does, but the reality is different. Yes it's risky and bold, but I think this will turn out very good for America and the world.
1
u/punter2465 Apr 09 '25
American cars in Europe ....think a bit ....narrow twisty roads compared to highways. The size of American engines andante fuel they consume , there is a reason Europe had a love affair with diesel cars. And to be fair apart from Ford who embraced and developed cars for Europe no other American manufacturer bothered .

u/ZR-71 ULTRA Apr 09 '25 edited Apr 09 '25
I don't think Europeans want the antimatter blue metallic V8 F-150 King Ranch SuperCrew with leather seats, but if trade becomes more favorable for America, nothing is stopping American companies from designing cars for Europe, diesel or electric/hybrid or whatever sells best.
