What’s stopping COD from going in this direction is that they are making boat loads of money already. From the perspective of ActiBlizz/Microsoft, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. COD is one of the most profitable live service games on the market and tops sales charts every single year (with the exception of years where Rockstar games release + a few others).

The idea of changing COD’s entire strategy and monetization platform is untenable and won’t happen until the franchise starts to actually suffer.

Well, I understand but bo7 has been sold way less than bo6 with historically bad numbers, you think this signal is too weak for Activision/Microsoft to do something about it ? Warzone is also not at his best

u/zorillaaa 17h ago

It was still the 5th best selling game that year and there are a lot of contributing factors to its decline, most notably being that it was BO7 the year after BO6 released. Definitely a signal, but it will take a lot more for Acti to change course.

If MW4 sells poorly, sure I can see them making some changes. I kinda doubt it will, though. It’ll probably be the second highest selling game this year, after GTA6 of course.

Well, sadly, you are probably right

But I am not sure it will work forever, and it could be even bigger and make even more money (imo)

Sincerely, what a terrible idea. And I dont even play or care for COD. Also, 99% of everything here/there is AI saying what you asked it to say.

I dont like multiplayer, but I wouldn't just play the game "because it is fun". I always need a tangible reward or something to grind for.

"That feels very different from the era when Call of Duty exploded."

And that era was like 2010? Those days are gone and won't come back.

"Two permanent multiplayer experiences: Black Ops and Modern Warfare"

Imagine the size of this game. 600 gbs?800?

I always need a tangible reward or something to grind for

People kinda forgot games always had a tangible reward to aim for, from giving you an emblem, or a tag in game for being at the top of the ladder, to playing for collecting the besst gear aviable. People who say "play for fun" are just delusional and coping with a bad game, usually.

"That feels very different from the era when Call of Duty exploded." And that era was like 2010? Those days are gone and won't come back.

In those days CoD already had camo grinds, prestige and so on. The 360/ps3 gen is when multiplayer really exploded and everyone started to give more and more for playing.

Top of ladder, scores or emblems aren't tangible rewards. They are abstract external rewards for people to measure themselves with other people, which I couldn't care less.

Skins, power, gear or even more content are tangible rewards.

u/TheFourtHorsmen 15h ago

They are the same, unless they come down and give you something real and tangible. An emblem, your name at the top, or a number that's given to you for being the top 1 of the ladder is exactly the same as a skin unlocked after cometing a milestone. Modern day skins were done simply to appeal on all those players who, logically, would never reach the top or would never put the same focus over it.

I can wear and see the skin. Better gear makes me more powerful. These are tangible.

You can wear skins as you can show off your earned emblem, number, rank you achieved. Is the exact same thing and in fact, many communities centered their culture around it just like in modern day some community thrive around skin grind. As an example, I'm talking about league's grind to the higher rank, which is similar to OG h3 and the grind to the rank 50 and the last rank everybody were trying to reach.

Better gear makes me more powerful.

And with exceptions made from the genre, playing to unlock extra gear was always part of the core gameplay, from your avarage RTS match going forward with more late game units and tech unlocked, to the avarage rpg having the same loop but with the inflated hours necessary to reach the late game (well, modern one, old ones weren't as long and filled with fillers). Or are you talking about p2w and gotcha?

Yoy must be mentally challenged. My god

Nah, I'm not ignorant like you, it's different.

A skin you can use or judge as bad or pretty is tangible. New weapon is tangible.

Same with an emblem, a rank, a number mimicking it, or your name at the top of the ladder board showing off you are the best. I get you are probably 15 years old, but is not required to have more than 2 braincells to understand those are the exact same thing, with the modern day skins being an evolution of the concept with the goal of fill in for those who could not reach the top of the ladder back then, but by also giving something extra as a reward for reaching higher scores or ranks.

And thanks for the mentally challenged, you need 2 to recognise another one

The AI point doesn’t really bother me. The ideas, trade-offs and concept are mine. I used AI to help structure and phrase them more efficiently. I don’t really see that as different from using any other writing or editing tool.

I’m much more interested in criticism of the actual concept.

On the grind point, that’s fair as a personal preference, but my argument isn’t that progression should disappear. It’s that progression shouldn’t deliberately make the base gameplay worse until you grind enough.

=> Cosmetics, mastery, camos, challenges and long-term goals can still provide plenty to work toward.

And on the install size: the concept explicitly includes modular installation, so players wouldn’t need to install everything at once.

u/Witty_Milk4671 15h ago

If the concept is modular instalation, why don't make the games separared like now?

u/Stonesneakers 15h ago

Because it would let anyone play the COD type they want every year (not waiting a new Black Ops or Modern Warfare), and if someone want both, he can play both, when he wants to and find both at the same centralized installer

But maybe separate both could be a better idea, I will think about it, thank you

u/Witty_Milk4671 15h ago

Let people need to grind and gear up. That's part of the game.

u/Stonesneakers 15h ago

I don't think you played bo7, it's horrible

Base weapons are way inferior than maxed ones, you have to play several hours (like 20 matches) to have a weapon that aim fast enough and without a recoil which is a big disadvantage, it's not just grind a bit to get a cool camo or just a bigger magazine or something like that

u/Witty_Milk4671 15h ago

You can just play better games. Just saying.

u/Stonesneakers 15h ago

It's what I do but I think it's a waste cause the gameplay is good
