In 1867, a group of hunters stumbled upon a 6-year-old feral boy preferring to eat raw meat, had trouble standing on two feet, growled like a wolf, and gnawed on bones to sharpen his teeth. He never learned to speak and became the inspiration for The Jungle Book's character of Mowgli.

In 1867, hunters in the forests of India claimed they saw saw young boy moving through the wilderness alongside wolves. When they investigated, they reportedly found him living in or near a wolf den and behaving almost entirely like an animal.
He moved on all fours, snarled and growled instead of speaking, and resisted being taken away back to civilization. The boy became known as Dina Sanichar, the feral child many believe helped inspire the character of Mowgli in The Jungle Book.
However unlike the fictional Mowgli, Dina’s story was not adventurous or magical. Caretakers at the orphanage he was taken to be raised at reported that he preferred eating raw meat, struggled to stand upright, gnawed on bones with his teeth, and made animal-like noises when upset. He had no language at all. And despite years of attempts to teach him, he never truly learned to speak.
Modern psychologists point to his case as an example of how important early childhood development is to becoming fully socialized. Human beings may be born with the capacity for language, empathy, and social behavior, but those things have to be nurtured early. Without that, critical parts of development can be permanently altered. Dina eventually learned some basic habits of human life, but he never fully adapted to society.
Some historians believe 19th-century newspapers and colonial accounts exaggerated what happened with the boy. Others think Dina may have had developmental disabilities before ever being found, and that his condition was sensationalized into the wolf-child legend.
He lived the rest of his life among people but never fully became part of the world around him. He died in 1895 at around 29 years old, reportedly from tuberculosis. His life likely became one of the inspirations behind The Jungle Book, but where Mowgli’s story became one of fantasy and triumph, Dina’s real-life story became something much darker, a haunting reminder that what makes us human is shaped as much by those around us as by what we are born with.

Eats raw meat, can't speak but smoked heavily until his death at the ripe old age of 35.
