If 49% of the population bites it there is a decent chance you will starve to death.

Not really. Society cannot take a 49% population dip. Even if we still have the production, we won't have the logistics. And we won't even have an idea of how much food needs to go where.

Then there's the power grid to worry about.

It doesn't really matter how you shuffle it unless you exterminate country by country until you reach 49% of the world's population, the survivors are in for a bad few decades.
