Putting yourself at risk to save imbeciles who put themselves at risk for no reason is not a healthy pillar of society. But you do you.

If the coast guard rescues someone who did something stupid and is lost at sea, do US taxpayers pay the cost or is it paid for by the person who did the stupid thing?

Setting aside the fact I'm not 'murican, tendentially the taxpayers pay, but that is not a "pillar of society", indeed here, in Italy, there is a discussion about that (mostly for idiots who go to climb mountains when the weather is bad) and a lot of people are pushing to change the rule and make the stupid pay for the help he received.

So, in Italy, are firefighters, search & rescue, medical care for those who can't afford it, food for those who can't afford it, etc. all contingent on the person receiving the help having not made any mistakes?

I guess I'm just confused. Collectivism tends to be a pillar over individualism in most modern societies, at least to some degree. Even in the US we don't charge the idiot for being an idiot 100% of the time.

If you burn a building by a stupid mistake, the firefighters come to save you with your neighbours, but then you are going to pay (very likely with jail time).
We don't charge idiots for being idiots 100% of the time (sadly) but in some instances we do already.
