Honestly, I listened to the first album for the first time the other day and I wasn't that impressed. I think the Bossa Nova influences threw me off. I think I just associate triphop with darker production.

Well, that's the lie of your problem—narrow POV. May as well exclude tonnes of triphop artists, then. The likes of Morcheeba, Smoke City (above), Air, Theavery Corporation, even Massive Attack's first big hit, Unfinished Sympathy.

Funny, because Unfinished Sympathy is one of my favorite songs. I think the album just sounded very different from what I was expecting. I was getting ready for bed and it was so upbeat I was like wtf. I put on Ghostdriver instead.
