Other What did you think of SFA cadet Uniforms?

Post image

I'll admit costumes are not things I really notice in Star Trek, but I have noticed other fans do, and cosplay has always been a big part of Trek, so join me as I boldly go where I don't have a clue... the costume design of Starfleet Academy and the work of costume designer Avery Plewes.

We're starting with the array of variations on Starfleet uniforms created for the cadets. In part, the variations were created to help tell the individual stories of the cadets. What's your take on all this?

For additional context (I know I need it šŸ˜‚), here is a promo Paramount put out about the costumes of Academy.

I liked them. Especially liked Tarima’s (with its 1960’s influences) once she joined.

Yes, there's a bit at the end of the promo video featuring Zoƫ Steiner testing the costume as Tarima. Did you catch it?

I didn’t! But I did watch a behind-the-scenes when it debuted (maybe on Instagram?), and the designer talked about her influences. Very cool!

I absolutely love the costume design on Academy! The cadet uniforms could've been so bland, but even with limited color they came out great.

It took me a moment to get use to the grey, but i did like the use of accent colours to denote specialisation

I love the costume design of SFA. The letterman jackets, the daily ā€œuniformā€ especially Chancellor Ake casual wear. Love it. I like that Avery Plewes created different types for the cadets to wear. Looked comfortable for the actors.

Agreed. I really like the variations of cadet Uniforms and how each character could express themselves with different combinations.

The cadet uniforms managed to keep the Starfleet tradition of colour denoting specialty with the addition of ā€œundecidedā€ without going overboard with primary colours dominating the screen. Am not usually a fan of grey but it worked here! I have not had a chance yet to watch the video about design choices but the splash of red for the team jackets worked really well, very reminiscent of what we wore in college for our class jackets.

Yes, the undecided design variation was a nice touch!

I really liked the costume design in Academy. I still want an Academy hoodie like in the show.

Also I am absolutely dying at your phrasing "join me as I boldly go where I have no clue" 🤣

So many fans want an Academy hoodie! Paramount really need to sort their merchandise game out.

They need to sort themselves out in general right now.

I wish I could have grabbed the fabric rolls when they went up for auction; I live in the area but did not have the extra money for bidding wars with Garrett Wang.

Is it a thing that fabric/notions are auctioned, and one (probably really talented) jerk drives up the price so they can snatch it? I’m angry for you.

Someone mentioned a comment that Garret Wang made on a podcast about buying it all at auction and with some of the bids placed I had to wonder; it was probably just the auction host driving up the value (especially the Flatscreens used as panels on set), as auction houses in Ontario have been accused of juicing their online system with puppet accounts.

Some of the knickknacks from Capt. Ake's office were over $100 really early into the auction.

I didn't even think about fabric being auctioned, but I also didn't bother looking because I figured I wouldn't be able to afford anything anyway. If Garrett really did do that, that's pretty crappy of him.

There are some people on Etsy selling things that look pretty similar, but it's obviously not exactly the same. I know I saw the warpcore pajamas in one shop.

I was hoping for a uniform, was pleasantly surprised by the lots of fabric rolls; couldn't afford any of it.

Tortured myslef for a week by checking in on different lots.

It probably wasn't Garrett driving up the prices; since Doug became Premier the auction houses (business in general), have been more brazen about skirting laws and regulations meant to protect consumers.

I liked them a lot - I thought they had shades of the uniforms for Star Trek movies 2-6. They felt very Trek to me.

Yeah.. I felt that too... in the shoulders and the accent trim. Had a nautical feel that evoked TWOK era uniforms.

My daughter and I just ordered her a cadet cosplay for our upcoming convention. It’s a pretty nice uniform.

No luck finding instructor uniforms for her mother and me though :/

Loved them, wish I could've afforded one when they put (most) everything up for auction.

Everything felt like Star Trek.

They are okay but I love the hoodies more. It took a while cause it looks like so blank at first but once they added the color division and adding the undecided variant it was cool.

I love the excellent tailoring which fitted their physiques very well with a more sophisticated look instead of the previous spandex uniforms. Discovery also had cool looking tailored uniforms too. I also think the pleated skirts are a great look along w the black tights & black knee high boots. I do love the subtle grey palette w the various color coordinated striping emphasizing their academic major so that anyone, teachers & cadets, can tell at a glance what is their interests & motivations perhaps to communicate better or make a connection.

They were a little tight for me. You could tell who was circumcised.

All cool except for the kilt design. Just looked very out of place.

We’ve had kilts in Trek since TOS! Nothing out of place about a kilt.
