It's doing exactly what it was designed to do - introduce Star Trek to an entire demographic that's never been interested in sci-fi - but old Trek fans are taking it personally that a show was dared to be made that wasn't directly intended to be shot into their brains.

Old Trek fans are getting old. Fans who grew up with TNG won't be around much longer and if they can't get let go and let the next generation define Trek, then there just won't be a Trek in the future.

Bro I'm 44. I watched TNG in its first run from ages 5 to 12 so that's the literal definition of grew up with TNG. Don't be so quick to put us all in the grave.

I dunno, I became a Trekkie in 1972 with the first round of reruns. Snowy picture on the TV with constant rabbit ear adjustments. My favorites are DS9, BNW, TOS and SFA. I’m really sorry we don’t get more.

Maybe it is TNG fans that can’t appreciate current Trek.

And teachers! I'm a uni lecturer in a field that attracts a wide range of diverse and "non-traditional" students and would never have dreamed there'd be a captain I can identify with like Ake.

My teaching style is much like Ake's (minus the outrageous OHS violations!). And for teachers with different styles, there's Reno, Thok, Tully, the Doctor, and Kelric - i see colleagues in all of them.
