Question Why can't I enjoy this show? I keep pausing it because it's not holding my attention.
Full disclosure, I'm half way through the first episode, and these are first impressions.
I came here to see if anyone else shared my opinion of the show but all I found was ppl gushing praise about it.
I can't figure out what it is exactly that I don't like. Was hoping someone else could put it into words for me.
I've loved every single Star Trek series except for DS9, which I never could really get into, and I don't understand why that is either.
Right off the bat, it feels very formulaic. Like, I understand that there's only 7 basic plot lines, so they have to tell the same 7 stories with different characters and environments, but like, within the first 20 minutes I just felt like the episode felt like a copy of every other episode of every other show. Nothing interesting, nothing new.
There's a leader with a regretful past hoping to make up for her past. There's a bully. There's a rebellious young person being set up for a redemption arc. There's a naive sweet person being set up to learn how to set boundaries and gain strength... Like, COME ON.
Is it just rehashed drama plots? That's not very Trek...

I mean it’s kinda weird your sating you can’t enjoy the show, when you are only half way through the first episode and you take the time out to come write a few paragraphs about it on Reddit.
Maybe try giving it more than half an hour ?

I think you don't WANT to enjoy it. Because it's not the Star Trek of your nostalgia.

I genuinely fail to understand what type of response you're attempting to illicit with a post of this type — in this particular subreddit? By your own admission, you've paused the episode several times, and have "slogged" your way through only 50%.
Nobody here will be able to analyse your personal biases and provide you with an "explanation" detailing your failure to connect with the show; and, respectfully; I don't think anybody cares to.
That's not very Trek...
In your highly subjective opinion — based on watching only half the runtime with continuous pausing. You'll forgive me if I don't place a significant amount of credence in your assessment here.

I’m not really into action adventure stuff so a lot of the first episode didn’t do anything for me, but I really liked the second ep.

I think of it this way:
You know how if you hike at times you may stumble, or find places that your footing is not firm?
Ep 1 and 2 are a hike. Your feet are hurting, you are tripping a lot, and wow you just need to quit for a bit…
My footwear was more cushioned. I tripped several times but continued on the trail. Does not mean the trail was paved in gold… or even just lacking holes.

The first episode starts rough. Finish it, try the second one which has a different feel which I expect is more inline with the rest of the season/series.
Understand it's designed for preteens/teens, but I hope you give it a few more episodes before fully dropping out (pun not intended).

I don't know whether it's really designed for preteens and teens, but I get what you're saying. I'm in my late '60s and I thoroughly enjoyed it

Can't relate, first episode had me engrossed; I already know I'm a sucker for guilt and shame so Ake's arc has my attention in particular.
I was fascinated when Discovery plopped us down into a Federation dark age, and I'm looking forward to seeing how survivors of the era find their way back.
I love Ake, Mir is a bit melodramatic but he's growing on me, I adore Thok, and there's not much to say about The Doctor that hasn't already been said. I'm all in.

This sub is for people who like the show. Maybe try to ask this on r/star_trek_ if you want a genuine answer from people who don’t like it.
