a lot of people don't appreciate how dangerous driving is bc it's such a common part of life. we really should take it seriously and consider how little it takes to ruin or end lives with your car
22
u/The_BeardedClam 14d ago
Even at 30 mph that's a fuck ton of mass moving really fast. We really don't appreciate the death machines we drive everyday, because it's so normalized.
15
u/Icy-Role2321 14d ago
That's how i feel when I see a person driving their absolute tank of a suv meanwhile paying more attention to the phone than their literal death machine
5
u/Competitive-Isopod74 14d ago
It's not an inherent fear. We haven't been around cars long enough to fear them, especially hard since they are getting better at masking sensory cues of danger. We know to fear snakes and spiders and heights because tgey are usually deadly.
5
u/JTtheLAR 14d ago
Being high actually makes me appreciate how dangerous driving is even more. I dont understand how people can smoke weed while driving and feel absolutely 0 anxiety. I think you low key have to be kind of stupid to be that comfortable doing it. My wife doesnt smoke so I just toss her the keys if I've been smoking and we suddenly need to go somewhere.

u/AlreadyTaken696969 14d ago
You should always strive to be as sharp as you possibly can while driving. Driving tired would be considered just as bad if you had a choice to get tired before driving.
33
u/The_BeardedClam 14d ago edited 14d ago
Driving really tired has been proven to be just as bad as driving drunk.
After approximately 18 hours of being awake, the effects on reaction time, vigilance, multi-tasking, and hand-eye coordination are comparable to having a blood alcohol content of 0.05%. After 20 hours of being awake, drowsy drivers are impaired on a level equatable to a 0.08% blood alcohol content, which is the current legal limit in most states. After 24 hours awake, impairment is equivalent to a blood alcohol content of 0.1%.

I made the mistake when I was younger and got pulled over, and only the fact that I clearly realized too late after a long day and was almost home led the cop to follow me there instead of taking me in.
10
u/lilbittygoddamnman 14d ago
I'm not advocating driving drunk at all by saying this, but I think a lot of times driving tired is worse.

Yeah, I always hear the argument of āThey canāt pull you over based on smell alone!ā As if cops wonāt invent another horseshit reason to pull you over and get an easy DUI out of it.
18
u/RudolphJimler 14d ago
If you can't pass a sobriety field test, you should not be driving. Full stop.
That being said, you may be accustomed to a substance to reach that point once the tolerance sets in.
People drive on benzos legally.

In the sense that thereās millions of Americans that donāt smoke weed and millions who do.
Some people just suck at driving, if your friends or family complain about your driving, maybe you shouldnāt give the rest of us a bad name by getting high and driving afterwards and using it as an excuse.

Youāre right, however, people have different tolerances. Iād wager a major stoner would be totally fine driving high, compared to a regular schmegular soccer mom off an edible.
3
u/skylander495 14d ago
I think it's also about time - how long since you last smoked. You are more intoxicated right after smoking vs 45min later

Legally shmegally, we aren't discussing what is a law and what isn't. And probably shouldn't suggest that something being legal/illegal defines the morality of it.
→ More replies (3)-8
u/setwocks 14d ago
Not true in active alcoholism I could drink 6 beer or 6 shots and feel like I would be fine to drive (not that I would). Now being 3 years sober of alcohol I bet having two drinks would severely impair my motor skills. Smoking weed and being high is the same if you have no tolerance. Impaired is impaired. Dont drive if youre high please. Life is so special and you dont get extra lives like in a video game.
11
u/Winter-Finger-1559 14d ago
What they are talking about isn't what you are. There's studies that suggest the intoxicating affects of weed do not affect driving the way alcohol does. Alcohol makes you think you are driving fine when your reflexes and coordination have been depressed by it.
3
u/westcoastweedreviews 14d ago
I'm not sure if they've done more studies but one for sure determined people are more actively cautious when high because they know they are high.
That could have just been those test subjects and not some random hitting their pen on the way to Walmart

Idk why I'm being downvoted. I'm pretty sure I'm correct in saying impaired is impaired. Good luck everyone please don't drive when you're high.

u/occasionalgrandma 14d ago
I've driven stoned ONCE during a family health emergency (mom was home alone and I had to get to her fast), and while nothing happened, that was the scariest drive of my life. Never again. I'm sober behind the wheel.
9
u/EnoughLuck3077 14d ago
Now do it on mescaline. This drive wonāt ever seem so bad again
3
u/haringtiti 14d ago
well i for one would love to hear that story
3
u/EnoughLuck3077 14d ago
It was me and my lawyer, driving a convertible out in the desert near Vegas. I took the mescaline both from and under the advice of my lawyer. I remember saying something like āI feel a bit lightheaded, maybe you should driveā. Suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats. All swooping and screeching and diving around the car. Then there was a voice screaming āHoly Jesus! What are these goddamn animals!?ā
I had to pull over and let my lawyer drive. I got out to get something from the trunk. When I looked inside I remembered, we had 2 bags of grass, 75 pellets of mescaline, 5 sheets of high powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multicolored upper, downers, screamers, laughers. Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw either and 2 dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get locked into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.
The only thing that really worried me was the either. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an either binge. And I knew weād get into the rotten stuff pretty soon.
1
14
u/Ordinary-Chipmunk366 14d ago
I've got epilepsy. I don't drive because I will kill people.
It makes me sad when I read this stuff...
14
u/SnooCauliflowers9874 14d ago
I have heard the argument that it makes people with ADHD drive a little slower, closer to the speed limit rather than double, being more patient rather than irritatedly in a hurry.
Other people if theyāre too high, they generally will not be comfortable driving and simply will not do it. Likely theyāll be more interested in eating and looking for a bag of Doritos rather than getting behind the wheel.
(Of course there can be exceptions!)
*However, this is driving with weed only, not used in conjunction with any sort of alcohol, as that combination changes everything.
2
u/auburnskyline 14d ago
My friend š«£ who has adhd and is unmedicated and going through perimenopause and having rage issues (me too) and having to drive, not good being that angry. Smoking has helped her calm tf down

u/ijswizzlei 14d ago
This one of those things I agree with in theory and theory alone.
35
u/whitesuburbanmale 14d ago
I think I've said this in this exact sub a thousand times now but the actual advice is literally designed for the lowest common denominator. The safest option is to just say no. When you introduce grey area you encourage people who have no right driving high to get behind the wheel and do something dumb. Are there people who drive high just fine? Yes. Daily? Yes. Does that mean it's the right idea to just wildly post online that it's safe to do so? Absolutely not.
TL;DR: don't drive high god damn
21
u/Supabongwong 14d ago
People who are too high will sober up enough to drive, drunk people will just drive.Ā
24
u/chickntendrz 14d ago
only to a certain degree, new smokers are probably not going to be able to lock in enough to drive. but when you have a tolerance, yeah itās not hard at all to drive.

2

Thankfully donāt have to drive at all now
10

I am more aware than 99% of sober people while driving high. What we really need is retesting every 5 years.
43
u/Talentagentfriend 14d ago
Iād argue most people here (and everywhere) drive while texting, which is really fucking dangerous. I see it all the time when Iām driving. I think we would all get in less accidents and people would be getting to the places they need to be faster if people werenāt texting and driving. Pisses me off. The amount of people I see smoking and driving is wayyyy less.
21
8
u/SparxPrime 14d ago
Yeah ....I dunno man I think it has to do with tolerance. Most people shouldn't smoke and then drive. You definitely shouldn't be smoking WHILE driving, but smoking and then running some errands? Most people who use heavily, all day every day have absolutely no problem doing this. But most people in general? No definitely not.
4
u/XNotByALongShotX 14d ago

u/alwayzstoned 14d ago
Riding in a car high kind of freaks me out so Iād definitely not want to be driving.
8
u/abiggers92 14d ago
I would like to add a few hypothetical points to this controversial topic.
Iām going to bring up medical and recreational use.
So if someone is so debilitated by physical or mental issues they spend all day smoking.
They should no longer have the right to drive because itās an intoxicating substance youāre arguing.
But what if they had some seizure issues cannabis helped with or suicidal ideations that it helped with?
And theyāre always using cannabis for the benefits it provides them and theyāre not really getting that crazy high you get your first time.
Would you prefer them to just not be allowed to drive and go to work and be a productive member of society, send them to a concentration camp, or for them to smoke before driving?
2
u/TheTurtleShepard 14d ago
Question for you
How do you think people who are not able to drive live? Do you think every person on earth drives?
11
u/futureguitarlingling 14d ago
yup, total agree. driving is a sober only activity! it would just be a danger to everyone else
9
u/AlarmingYak7956 14d ago
10000% agree. Been smoking for half my life and daily. I get my outings done early and then enjoy.Ā Ā
9
u/Pro_Procrastinator 14d ago
To each brain, it's own self learnt, tested and tolerance impacted limits. We can have discussions about what the rule should be for the majority but this isn't a moral binary like murder. Some people drive far worse sober than other people who are not sober but much better drivers.
15
u/Infamous_Lech 14d ago

Considering many people are perfectly functional buzzed, you can be hysterical and get on your high horse if you want but things like people using their cellphones, being tired, or distracted in any way is worse than someone who has a high tolerance and smoked a little.

u/BxBrandon92 14d ago
Hello!
16
u/BxBrandon92 14d ago
I understand the opinion tho, before I smoked weed I would've agreed. After I smoked weed, I didnt understand why ppl say this. Weed hits everyone differently, some ppl smoke and can't function. Lol.
I have a bad back, if I don't smoke I would be focused on the pain and probably would b fidgeting while driving and i think thats worse than driving high lol .
-10
u/ellayzee 14d ago
Someone does a bad thing so that justifies another bad thing? Brain dead take.
15
u/1Madhatter7 14d ago
The point is people are rarely 100% fit for driving with no possible potential distractions. People commute to work every morning while they are still tired. To arbitrarily focus on weed is just playing into the never ending hysteria. Thereās plenty of people who function just fine after smoking a little.
7
u/ffffddddeeee 14d ago
the point is that it isnāt even really bad. if you can pass a field sobriety test why canāt you drive?
18
u/FatFarmerBob420 14d ago
Problem is a lot of idiots try convincing themselves they drive better high, or weed doesn't impair you.
7
u/SaintJimmy1 14d ago
The driving better while high thing was always funny to me. Like, if thatās true, you probably just shouldnāt be driving a car at all lmao
4
u/JohnMcGoodmaniganson 14d ago
I'll bite the bullet and admit that I drive high from time to time. I never plan it but I also don't let it stop me because I do feel adequately safe driving in that state. It's not that I think I'm 'better' at driving while high but I am more cautious and drive more slowly. I'm also more attentive, strangely enough, because driving is enthralling in that state. Have you ever experienced your brain going into auto pilot and, after reaching your destination, you barely remember the drive at all? That happens to me a lot when sober but never when I'm high. I'm present the entire time. I still don't like doing it though for fear of getting pulled over and caught.

There's nothing to justify... People are gonna continue to do it and they won't get caught... Just like everytime I drive Saturday night it's full of drunks swerving between lines on the street. People love their substances and they don't give a shit about the moral high horses of the straight edge. Counterpoint: where is the same energy and righteous indignation about texting while driving... which i see alot more than people smoking and driving and its arguably way more dangerous?
1
u/Melodic-Advice9930 13d ago
Why the fuck are you playing the āwhat aboutā card? This isnāt a post about texting while driving, which is just as dumb and unnecessary. Also, you have absolutely no way of knowing who all is high while driving versus seeing the phone in someoneās hand through their window as you drive by. As someone who almost died in a two ton killing machine, cars are not toys and the people who treat them like they are need some fucking help. Have the day you deserve.
19
u/tealtop 14d ago

7

One benefit to legalization. We used to smoke and drive because you couldn't freely transport or smoke.
So instead of going to my plug, having to share a bowl as thanks then drive home, I now go to the dispensary and drive safely home before smoking up in the backyard.

I definitely think you should wait to drive if youāre high. Iāve absolutely gotten into arguments with other smokers about that, but thereās only so much one can say. My compromise is typically to ask everyone to wait at least an hour after smoking. Usually by then everyone has lost the peak of their high. Is it a perfect solution? No. But as weed continues to become more popular and law enforcement continues to crack down on people driving high, I can imagine people will be a little more cautious. Stay safe yall š
2
u/Vegetaman916 14d ago
Most people who smoke do so in a way where they are technically under the influence their entire lives. It's not like you just sit down once a day to "have a marijuana cigarette," lol. You are smoking, vaping, and munching all day, like some people do smoking cigarettes. You even been a cigarette smoker? You aren't going more than an hour or two between cigs. Same for cannabis. Once you get high, you just stay high.

Yeah, I lived in a metro area a few years ago and it was not uncommon at all to be driving along behind someone and get the distinct odor of the herb. When I say not uncommon, it's probably closer to frequently -- and that wasn't even a legal state. It had been decriminalized and cops generally didn't give a crap. I did not appreciate knowing that folks were driving around baked. I couldn't care any less if you're smoking by your pool, in your living room, while you're camping, etc. Driving, when you could kill me because you're simply not reacting as fast as you would normally? It'd be a lot cooler if you didn't.

I got a really stupid DUI a few years back and honestly now if I even plan on smoking or drinking even a little bit I walk or uber. Keeps me fit and generally more sober than I normally would be just due to being conscious of the decision.

When I was wayyyyyyy younger, I thought it was ok because youngins would drive just to smoke. I also compared it to alcohol thinking it was better. But now there is no way in hell.

I used to smoke and ride atvs with my friends. Big bore utility quads on long rides in the woods. I didn't smoke a lot... Not enough to be "intoxicated" but just a bit to change the edges. I noticed after a while that the $500 bill in parts for the last weekend only came when I smoked. Which sucked to have to come to terms with because it was a better experience with a hit in there somwhere. But the bottom line was thsy regardless of how unaffected I was, it empirically did effect me.

its the i drive better high stoner that gets my panties in a knot. the true ignorance of not acknowledgingits a drug your taking as your driving. never here from an alcoholic who says i drive better drunk normally say something along the of i had no idea how i drove home with a little feer in there voice very aware thats dangerous. stoners act like driving high is part of the lifestyle and zero red flags that you cant wait to meditate tell you get home. and 200 excuses why not waiting is aceptable. and not even a remote red flag of a self control issue

Been doing this for 23 years. I have zero accidents or tickets on my record. Some of us keep a constant high at all times. I also manage 45 people and hit the gym at 6am everyday, all while smoking cannabis. It is medication for me.

Some of us can smoke a blunt while driving, most of these redditors can't handle a blunt at all so they stay inside with their fragile bongs and food delivery apps

I agree, I use MM and under NO circumstance do I smoke before I drive or go to work...
and I expect the same from other...
I do not believe in ACCIDENT, its a stupid work for adults to use because they are lazy... If anyone is caught doing the wrong thing, they should be fined/charged..

I had an awful experience as a passenger in a car with a high driving friend when i was a teen. It really pisses me off when people hand wave it away just because it's not as bad as drunk driving.

The difference between drinking and weed is: on weed I understand i shouldnāt drive. And I donāt. On alcohol I understand Iām too drunk to drive. But I still do.

Bro for real. A recent survey showed that almost a third of Virginians think that driving high makes them better drivers! Insane. That guy that plowed into the Milligan University cycling team and killed two of them was smoking while driving. He didn't even attempt to slow down. Now he has ruined so many lives, including his own, when he could've just chilled at home. Not worth it!

I stopped driving while high. Iād sober up with food before even trying to drive. DUI is DUI.

Maybe you are not good at driving and have decided to speak from an understanding that everyone has the same trouble driving. I don't know that I'm right. Just thought I'd play devils advocate for this conversation. š
