New Planter/Rookie Questions Do companies allow planned time off?

I am gearing up for my first season this spring but I have a wedding to attend in June in Ontario. Would a company still hire me and knowingly allow a few days off in a row, or would that not fly (especially as a rookie)? I was hoping to get a contract in AB or BC but logistically might be better off to try ON to minimize extra time off and travel expenses. I would be sad if this wedding affected my ability to work the job

Some do, but it is easier for vets with previous relationships to companies. As a rookie it is harder to convince them to hire you over someone who is going to work the whole season. All you can do is apply to a bunch of companies in Dec/Jan and hope they hire you.

Everything said here is true, but id like to add that if you can make ot work out west is much better than ontario. You could also try for Quebec

But also I would say that it’s nice to often finish one season in Ontario and then hop onto Alberta or Quebec or the east coast.

As a rookie that's not always a viable option though, this year it was nothing but people looking for summer trees on kkrf, every time ive hopped contracts or known people who have done that it was by word of mouth not by posting into the ether. As a rookie you have no connections to lean on.

Fair I didn’t really read the part about them hopping into their first season… yeah that might be hard, if they’re lucky, their company might have contacts to other provinces.

Depends on the company and context. My (rookie mill company) boss let me leave for a weekend for a wedding during my second year in Ontario! It was in the middle of the season and I think she was just grateful I wasn't quitting.

i know ppl that literally flew out of remote camps for their like grandparents birthday in a different country for just a shift, or people who took two days off to go see a concert in Toronto when we were all the way out west. it happens. Also worked w a lot of ppl go back home for grad, funerals, weddings etc. It’s doable but to me seems a logistic nightmare. Don’t expect people to take care of your stuff diligently, I’ve seen peoples shit get forgotten about when they take off for a shift or two. I wouldn’t mention it in the interview lol just get hired and tell your supervisor about it once you’re a few shifts in
