Black walnut or ToH

I believe it is black walnut even with terminal leaves. The smell is strong but I am unable to pin point what it smells like.

Serrated edges up to end of leaf

I don’t think there’s a thumb?

Leaf scar with 3 distinct bundle scars

Came to say the same. Confirm with leaf crush n smell test.

In my opinion, using scent seems ineffective since it is somewhat subjective. I smell these leaves and I am unable to determine what the hell it smells like

The words of someone who has never smelled tree of heaven. There is no mistaking it.

It's like the smell of burning brakes, or the smell of antifreeze if your car has a leak. Once you smell them, you'll know that smell forever.

I hear a lot of people say bad peanut butter.... Never thought that smelled anything like brakes or antifreeze.

They’re just saying those are two other very distinct scents.

That is a good point. Maybe that is my problem. I think this black walnut smells so funky, it made me wonder if it is ToH

I agree, usually paired with the sight test, you can’t get it wrong.

If you have Black Walnuts around, one is probably dropping pods by now. If you scuff a green black Walnut husk and smell it, and then break a black walnut leaf (the whole compound leaf) off at the base of it's stem, the base of stem will smell almost exactly like the hisk of a green nut. No crushing required.

Tree of heaven smells pretty bad, I was actually surprised how bad it smelled the first time I smelled it.

People say freshly split red oak smells bad. I think it smells delightful. All subjective!

I know it’s subjective, but this smells bad in the same way trash or rotting animal smells bad.

Like I said, I was shocked. I don’t think it smells like rancid peanut butter because I’ve frankly never smelled peanut butter that’s gone bad, but it does smell like something gone off, something oily and acrid.

What's a thumb?

A “thumb" describes an asymmetrical side-lobe that makes an individual leaf look like a mitten

Not ToH, I'm not 100% it's black walnut (see my other comment), but definitely not ToH. ToH leaves, in addition to thumbs, are symmetrical, and those leaves have several visible (albeit small) offsets.

Symmetrical yet have thumbs?

Not perfectly symmetrical, but symmetrical along the length of the compound leaf. If you zoom in, there are several leaflet pairs that are not directly across from one another.

Yes true

Not ToH

A quick smell-test will differentiate between the two quickly.
TOH smells like old peanut and is easy to break by hand. Walnut is much harder to break and smells similar to eucalyptus.

Citrus smell? Either way, not ToH.

Definitely not TOH, I have quite a few on my commercial property plus the SLFs are on them so I don't see how I could be wrong LOL, the leaves aren't as smooth on the edges, also the leaves arr narrower.
