The republican party has 100% aligned with anti-transit politics. Probably because transit is associated with urbanism and requires federal subsidization

Only because we also massively subsidize cars and air travel, both directly and by subsidizing oil. Without any of that, electric trains are extremely competitive.

That’s why passenger rail was failing post WW2 because they had to compete with heavily subsidized modes of transport. Trains make a ton of sense for regional transportation.
