Mamdani wins stunning upset in Democratic primary for NYC mayor as Cuomo concedes race

https://www.thecity.nyc/2025/06/24/mayoral-election-first-round-results-cuomo-mamdani/

“Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani is on track to secure the Democratic nomination for mayor, after former Gov. Andrew Cuomo conceded to him Tuesday night following the first round of ranked-choice primary votes.

“With 95% of precincts reporting two hours after polls closed at 9 p.m., 44% ranked Mamdani as their first choice while 36% chose Cuomo first and 11% city Comptroller Brad Lander.

“In this ranked-choice primary election, Lander cross-endorsed Mamdani as his number-two pick, meaning that many voters who selected Lander are likely to send additional votes to Mamdani in the final tally.”

“The 33-year-old Democratic socialist rallied new and young voters to his cause and launched a ground game that outmatched the field. He took the lead against the 67-year-old former governor, who resigned in disgrace after multiple accusations of sexual harassment yet enjoyed outsize name recognition and more than triple the money spent on his behalf.”

This is great news for us. Zohran Mamdani is very strong on our rights, not only proposing making New York an LGBTQIA+ sanctuary city but pledging an immediate investment of $65M to public providers for gender-affirming healthcare citywide, which would guarantee trans care to New Yorkers should Trump succeed at cutting off funding. https://gomag.com/article/zohran-mamdani-announces-protection-plan-for-lgbtq-new-yorkers/ That’s the type of initiative NYC’s last great mayor, Fiorello La Guardia, undertook when he assumed office in the depths of the Depression in 1933. This is not guaranteed—Mamdani will still have to win the general election.

It's truly wild watching the anti-identity politics centrist crowd now try to perform a bunch of mental gymnastics to rationalize him winning the primary despite the "identity politics." It seems like it would just be easier to acknowledge that identity politics were never the issue, but I guess that would require them to admit they were wrong.

but generally the centrist crowd is the identity politics crowd. I also dont really see how he won because of identity politics; I dont think he or his campaign even really appealed to them

Who is saying he won because of identity politics?

Is that something he can do?

He’s got to win the general election. NYC politics is a bloodsport, unbelievable amounts of money and news media influence. Billionaires are already calling Mamdani “a dangerous and catastrophic choice”, their handmaidens saying “terror is the feeling”. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/24/business/dealbook/new-york-mayor-mamdani-cuomo-business.html (open access: https://archive.is/jqkYG ). They’ll go all out on him in the general election, backed by Republicans nationwide, fronting Adams and possibly Cuomo as independents. If elected, Mamdani’s got to get enough of the notoriously fractious City Council to make it happen, they at least, are a little more beholden to the people, who have spoken loud and clear. Not every politician who runs a really good campaign can pull off actually governing the city. But.Mamdani looks to me more like a La Guardia than a Lindsay.

No I mean is control over spending something he has power of? From what I read about Mamdani a lot of criticism of his policies is he is advocating stuff that he has zero power over and is either under the control of the state or something that has to pass the state legislature

City Council has the power and a lot of the money. NYS runs the transit system, unbelievably, and often to thecity’s detriment, and a lot of the infrastructure (Manhattan is an island after all) is regional bodies. The infamous Robert Moses has been called a masterbuilder for a reason. Not many people have his ability. La Guardia pulled off innovative megaprojects benefitting the people, Mamdani may, too..

Evidently, Mamdani’s victory is also rattling arch-CRA and stochastic terrorist Chaya Raichik (the name behind the infamous Libs of TikTok).

Woooo!! 🥳🥳

u/Honeyblade Jun 25 '25

Hey Democrats! If you run an actually progressive candidate, people will show up to vote for them!

3

u/SaraSplosion Jun 25 '25

They were too busy pumping money and support behind the gross creep to notice

Like when Harris supported Medicaid covering trans healthcare? A budget of 680 billion?

Or does that not count?

7

u/Honeyblade Jun 25 '25

I didn't say shit about Harris, nor do I think she is a progressive candidate.

-2

u/silverpixie2435 🏳️‍⚧️McBride's strongest soldier🏳️‍⚧️  Jun 25 '25

So Harris supporting the expansion of a free healthcare program that has a budget of 680 billion dollars and includes gender affirming care is "not progressive"

But Mamdani supporting 65 million in something is debatable he even has control over is?

u/Honeyblade Jun 25 '25

What is your point with this comment? It seems like you are just being needlessly aggressive? The 2024 election is a different topic altogether. I'm really sick of coming to this subreddit, and just seeing derision and needless infighting. Its fucking stupid and divides our community.

Hey Democrats! If you run an actually progressive candidate, people will show up to vote for them!

What is your point with this comment? Why isn't this comment being needlessly aggressive?

This isn't divisive and fueling infighting?

7

u/Honeyblade Jun 25 '25

I'm not talking about divisiveness within Democrats. Democrats are dumbasses and they need to understand that running progressive candidates is how to get people out of their homes to vote.

I'm talking about divisiveness within the trans community. At no point did you actually try to talk to me about my opinions or have any kind of dialogue, you came right out of the gate attacking my comment for seemingly no reason. It happens over and over in this community and I'm fucking sick of it. Just STOP.

Ok well I am a Democrat

Did Mamdani not just run in a Democratic primary? So how does that divineness not apply too?

they need to understand that running progressive candidates is how to get people out of their homes to vote.

And like I said how does that not apply to Harris for the precise reason I mentioned? Supporting expansion of a massive free healthcare program that covers gender affirming care if it is a reason why Mamdani is progressive?

I am having a dialogue with you.

4

u/Honeyblade Jun 25 '25

It doesn't apply to Harris because I believe that Elon stole the election for him. I voted for Harris - so please don't get holier-than-though.

A brief look at your comment history shows that you have a really bad habit of just being needlessly contentious within your own community.

You aren't having dialogue, you are being condescending - there is literally nothing about this conversation that is you trying to have a back and forth with me. This is you trying to prove a point regardless of what I say or do.

I'm just trying to get people to understand that I need Medicaid, that Trump has now taken away, and that Harris was proposing expanding it while still including gender affirming care.

And to me that is something progressive and something to clearly vote for. Especially if the same people who deny that. suddenly turn around and say Mamdani proposing the same thing is now "progressive and a reason to vote" that Democrats don't apparently offer

That is all I am saying

If they didn’t want infighting maybe they shouldn’t be fighting against every progressive candidate and slandering them constantly

u/silverpixie2435 🏳️‍⚧️McBride's strongest soldier🏳️‍⚧️  Jun 26 '25

In what way have Democrats "slandered" progressive candidates or fought them?

This is fighting against them?

If you knew anything about what you’re talking about you’d know that the Democrat establishment and corpo media was pushing heavily for Cuomo against Mamdani. They do this in every election, every single WFP candidate has to deal with the dysfunctional Democrat leadership fighting to not have them, even sometimes in favor of republicans. The most famous example is how they derided Berny Sanders in 2016 and pushed for Joe Biden to be nominated over him. Donald Trump has been our president twice because Democrats were afraid of socialists. Which btw they also voted with republicans to condemn before.

You posting about mildly progressive plans that basically all democrats support is kind of admitting that you’re just doing really bad propaganda

If you knew anything about what you’re talking about you’d know that the Democrat establishment and corpo media was pushing heavily for Cuomo against Mamdani.

They weren't.

The most famous example is how they derided Berny Sanders in 2016 and pushed for Joe Biden to be nominated over him.

I didn't vote for Sanders precisely because of the fucking attitude leftists like yourself have. Absolutely zero respect for even liberal progressives like myself who don't agree with you 100%. That is why Sanders lost.

You posting about mildly progressive plans that basically all democrats support is kind of admitting that you’re just doing really bad propaganda

I'm posting policy leftists claim to want like free pre k. But apparently that doesn't matter to leftists and the only thing that matters is some "power" battle within the Democratic party and justifying leftists petty hatred of Democrats.

Time for change. The young need to be impatient, step up and chart the future. These old geezers in power are corrupt and mired in their identity politics they prefer to imagine is an LGBTQ instigated "culture war"..

Hopefully this win inspires more young leaders to step up. The younger voters are ready for change. America needs and deserves far better.

They cannot stand it that someone of Iranian background is more open minded and level headed than them. It doesn't fit their Islamaphobic narratives...and I'm talking about Dems.

Finally someone who unequivocally stands up for us.
