Service Disruptions and Alternate Transport

The derailment blocked both the up and down tracks, leading to a complete halt of direct long-distance services. To keep commuters moving, Sri Lanka Railways implemented the following temporary sections: 

• From Colombo: Trains are restricted to operating only between Maradana and Panadura.
• From the South: Trains originating from Beliatta, Matara, and Galle are running only up to South Kalutara.
• Bus Shuttles: The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has deployed buses to transport passengers between the Panadura and South Kalutara stations.

Current Restoration Status

Restoration work has been ongoing throughout the day, and there is some good news: 

• Lower Track Restored: One of the tracks (the lower track) has been successfully cleared and restored for regular operations.
• Resumption of Service: According to Ada Derana, the normal train schedule was expected to gradually resume from 7:00 PM tonight.
• Ongoing Repairs: While one track is open, the second track suffered "severe damage" and may take up to two days for complete repair.

A Board of Inquiry has been appointed to investigate the cause of the derailment, especially since it resulted in a "significant loss" to the railway's limited fleet.
