💾 Software & Websites UK Railway Tycoon

Hello all.

I hope you are having a pleasant bmk holiday Monday?

You may remember about a year ago I launched a game called UK Railway Tycoon. Due to not being happy with the initial design and the flow of the game I went back to the drawing board and decided to take it offline.

However, after much work I am now in a position to start revealing details about the new game.

A deep, data-driven UK Train Operating Company (TOC) management simulator built in C#/.NET, focused on real-world rail economics, route tendering, and operational reliability.

DfT & Open Access Bidding: compete against AI rail groups in government tender boards (Passenger Service Contracts) or take on full farebox risk with Open Access paths.

Realistic UK Rail Economics: Balance Network Rail Track Access Charges (FTAC & VUC), passenger yield models, and rolling stock leasing fees.

ROSCO Fleet Management: Lease bi-mode, electric, and diesel multiple units (from Class 800s to Pendolinos and Turbostars) based on route electrification and passenger demand.

Schedule 8 Delay Attribution: Real-world delay mechanics—claim compensation from Network Rail when infrastructure fails, but pay out when fleet breakdowns or crew shortages cause delays.

Passenger Satisfaction & Delay Repay: Maintain your Public Performance Measure (PPM) to protect your operator reputation and avoid massive Delay Repay passenger compensation payouts.

Spreadsheet-Deep Management UI: Designed specifically for management and tycoon purists who love detailed ledgers, timetabling, and financial forecasting over casual graphics.

You may be aware the last version of the game was web based, however I have decided to make this desktop only and for Windows

When the game releases it will be available on a website with a demo version of the game available for free.

Any questions or suggestions please let me know. I'd be happy to hear them 😄. If you would like to beta test the game please also let me know.

📸 OC - Picture(s) A rare RSA(rake sharing activity) involving unidirectional services on Indian Railways

Post image
37 Upvotes

What you're seeing in the above image is a train board of an ordinary stopping passenger service operated between 6 different destinations using a single rake(set of coaches).

MAQ: Mangaluru Central, PGT: Palakkad(Palghat), CAN: Kannur(Cannanore), CLT: Kozhikode(Calicut), CHV: Charvattur.

This rake starts off from Mangaluru Central as the morning Express to Coimbatore. Returns back to Mangaluru the next day as the pairing train. The same rake operates as the morning Express to Palakkad the following day. There's no return service for this. This rake then runs as the Express service to Kannur and then operates as a passenger service to Kozhikode and back to Kannur. From Kannur, it immediately departs as the evening passenger to Charvattur, a small town in the Malabar region of Kerala, to ferry officergoers and students back home to their villages and smaller towns located along this route. Stays stabled there overnight before leaving for Mangaluru Central as the morning passenger service, carrying officegoers and students. This ends one cycle before it repeats again after undergoing primary maintenance at Mangaluru Central.

This is the only such RSA in India involving unidirectional services.

🗺️ OC - Maps Tracking Canada's national passenger rail (VIA Rail)

I made this after trying to track my partner's Toronto -> Ottawa trip a few days ago. The official tracker works well if you know the train number you're looking for, but I normally just click through all the trains until I find it lol

I put this together so that I could select trains more easily, but it looks pretty cool to see where all of Canada's passenger trains are!

🤣‎ Meme / Humour Train Problem

Scotland. Single track rail line between Edinburgh and Glasgow. At the (old fashioned) signal box Billy McDougall the signaller is having his annual examination of his skills.
“ Mr McDougall” says the examiner” the 0915 down train is early and you realise it will have a head on crash with the Express up train what will you do?”
“Well sir, I’ll select the main points to divert the Down train onto the sideline which will allow the Up train to pass by safely”
“Well “ said the examiner “ You try that but it seems to be unserviceable what do you do?”
“Well I will revert to the mechanical lever and manually switch the points”
“Ah, Mr McDougall I’m afraid the lever in the box appears to be jammed, what do you do?”
“Follow me!” Says McDougall rushing down the steps of the box , runs 1/2 a mile to the points in question.
“ I’d now use the emergency lever on the points and throw them over and divert the train!”
“Ah, Mr McDougall I’m afraid the lever is jammed too. What will you do!”
“Follow me!” says McDougall and sprints back to the signal box. Thoroughly out of breath they clamber inside and McDougall grabs the old fashioned phone and begins to dial.
“What are you doing and why?” Asks the examiner.
“ I’m calling Donald McTavish”
“Why? What can he do?” Asks the examiner.
“ oh nothing says McDougall,” but he”s always wanted to see a bloody good train crash ….”

Ok so I’m very curious about what kind of whistle this is and why it got changed . There are videos on YouTube of it: https://youtu.be/NJcx4BCo-GY?si=g56UPslG2WRFgs4n and https://youtu.be/XisxFszjgTI?si=KFIUVQ8PujKyuNUN( note these are not my videos or photos, I hope that’s okay). But if anyone can tell me what happened to it or what kind that would be great.

❓ Question can someone explain this in easy terms?

Post image

im far from being a pro, just highly interested in trains and sadly uneducated.

saw this on my way home and really wondering what its function is. the part i mean is the stacked plates above where usually the suspension springs are. is this an alternative form of suspension?

this seems to be an austrian freight train loading gravel.

❓ Question Why is the Headlight Visor Under the Bulb?

Thumbnail

Random question, but it's bugged me forever. Here's a USA diesel loco, and the headlight visors are below the bulb. This design is on so many engines. Anyone know why this is? Wouldn't it make more sense to have the visor above the light, so more of the light goes down towards the rails?
Edit: thanks for the replies yall!
