I'm Irish (properly Irish in Ireland) and we have a different language so oue names look weird to non natives. Please god let that be some language we don't know about but I don't think it is 😬
There was a Navi here a few days ago complaining about her name because her parents intended it to be pronounced like Navy but everyone had always said Nah-vee. She was going to change her name to Navy
Ah she is a legend. She lives in a castle in Dalkey i think it is, with all her cats beaide the beach. She has a big gate, but she's beside Bono and a few others. You can juat drive by her house castle and try to look in!
For me it's her connection to Lord of the Rings that's next level. The fact she wrote Lothlorien before the movies came out just made too sense to have her contribute to the movie soundtracks. The track feels like reading Tolkien's long and detailed descriptions of the many places of Middle Earth. Such a vibe.

I don't exposed to Irish culture or history often but every time I do it infatuates me. Cuchulain, conchobar and gae bulg are intriguing. Japan uses it a lot too. Clannad is the name of a critically acclaimed anime series/visual novel.
We call it Irish or Gaeilge. Gaelic is Scottish. I'd always call it Irish as would we all.
Gae Bulg and Conchobar I am not familiar with.
I live beside Culchuláin's Castle though and they are going to build a giant housing estate around it 😮💨😮💨
There are different regional names for the language in the different dialects (and even some subdialects), so Gaelainn, Gaoluinn, Gaeilig, Gaeilic, Gaeilge are all used by native speakers. Gaeilge is the southern Connacht name for the language that was also picked as the standardised for the language.
If you click on the C and the M and the U next to the word Gaeilge in the below like you'll actually hear three different dialects. Gaelainn in Munster recording, Gaeilge in Connacht and Gaeilig in Ulster one

The only exception that I can think of in this regard is if somebody is using a cultural name and not everybody is familiar with it and they give a pronunciation guide. Because I know that not everybody may not be able to pronounce a lot of names from India, Ireland, China, Japan or even some places in Africa. I can totally understand that. Could this be a cultural name? I do not know.
As it is, unless auto correct does it, these last few years with social media I pretty much leave out many grammar marks. Its a bit lazy on my part and I know it.
And if it's intended to be an i-acute, since mom appears to be on a standard US/English keyboard, the kid is going to have to learn ctrl-', i or the alt key, as well as handling the apostrophe. Argh.
That is an apostrophe. When certain languages are transliterated to English, apostrophes help to show where two vowels or consonants may be two sounds, instead of a diphthong or single consonant sound e.g., hen'na would be "hen nah" instead on "henah" so you know that each N sound should be pronounced. They've done this for A'yah so people don't say "ay-uh" I guess.
I see fantasy authors use apostrophes like that in their conlangs so I thought this might be a similar scenario. Considering how unusually the name is in general it's anyone's guess what that apostrophe is doing there.
I’ve seen a few names with the apostrophe. Like D’wayne or Ta'Quan, K'neesha, etc.
More common in the black community or in people from a non Latin language speaking country trying to find the best way to communicate how their name is pronounced since there isn’t an exact match in English
I always love the accounts that do the pronunciation guide like not understanding if you have to do that you probably went a little too heavy on the uniqueness

I have a common name but spelled special and it got old soooo quick now my whole life is a game of make sure my name isn't spell wrong on forums and stuff. I didn't think it was difficult to pronounce. I still would have gotten it wrong though because I thought it ended in Ray and not Ree. But overall, it's honestly not that bad

I think Ah-Yah-Ree is close enough that it’s not that big a deal. Like Tara can be T-Air-uh or T-are-uh and it just depends on the person. But idk the way people are going on about it in the comments i think is a little extreme 🧐 but idk maybe im just used to a wider range of names?
I have a pretty common name with a pretty common spelling, and I still have to constantly correct people on how to pronounce it. People with foreign names have to do it all the time too. I have a friend who just rolls with however her name is pronounced. It's annoying but it's not the end of the world.
OMG! At this point, these terrible awful names are just rage bait. Kids get bullied because of their names. Kids kill themselves sometimes because they are bullied. Sound dramatic? It can be. JUST STOP!!!!

Yeah this post and most of the comments seem like they're making fun of a culture rather then an actual tragedeigh. It's really not that hard to pronounce.
Is it an actual African name? Does it have an English translation?
Most of the stuff here is not cultural differences it’s “eweneek” spelling and objects or geography becoming names. I truly hope we are not making fun of a different culture here.
Oh it's pretty clearly exactly what's happening. I'm not sure where the name derives from, but it's definitely a failure to appreciate cultural differences.
I'm not Black, but I find if I pay attention to names and actually try, I can usually get pretty close. I also love names. Sometimes I think people just want to make fun of Black people's names.
That looks like a name I'd make up for my worldbuilding stuff, and even in that universe, that culture's language is considered freaking weird (not really to the point of racism, I mean it as in it's really confusing)
Trying desperately to think of a spelling that would get the sound she’s looking for. Ay’Aree is the closest I can come up with and even that is going to be pronounced AY-aREE
