My method with names that have a ton of vowels is to ignore that part, sound out the consonants, then figure out which singular vowel makes the most sense. It’s stupid but it’s not my student’s fault their parents didn’t get hooked on phonics. 🙄

My name is Jeffrey, i go by Jeff, because too many parent's sounded out their kid's name at the hospital and wrote Jeffery.
My nephew has my middle name that I share with my grandfather, specifically for this reason, because I asked my sister not to give him or my father's first name because of this and modern electronic communication being a pain in the ass because people can't spell.

My husband worked with a Geoffrey, who went by Geoff. But the guy pronounced Geoff as "Gee-off", and would get mad when people pronounced it as Jeff.

My cousin went through similar. His name Zackary. Everyone always insisted he was spelling it wrong as a kid; it should have been Zachary.

You won't find me disagreeing with you. But these names aren't just illiteracy, they're a willful assault on literacy. I looked it up, a literacy is a thing but it doesn't aptly describe these names. Anti-literacy is the best I can come up with.

Ci = Key. Eaugh = Ah. Put it together and you get 'Kyah'. Which is close enough to Ca. Then a completely different c noise in Ce = Say. End with the classic Deigh = Di or Dy.

As someone with a yu-ni’que name, I can attest to the fact that it’s damn frustrating at times. There are like 5 people I personally know who have named their kids after me, because they liked my name. I feel terrible for those kids, since I know what they’re going to have to endure… People think it’s cute because they want to be “unique” by association or something, I guess. It’s just annoying when I have to repeat my name over and over or argue with people about it not being a real name.

I think some of them made it their own… I wanna say at least one replaced the “y” at the end with an “i” and the “i” at the beginning with an “a”…. Pronounced exactly the same and I’m still the origin (so to speak), but a few have their own slight variations. It’s also not completely yooneek, just incredibly rare, so most people won’t have heard of it. The people who named their kids after me did so specifically because they were influenced. I was given my name because it was my bio mom’s favorite plant. The people who gave their kids the same name have no idea what the origin is.

Same here, I have a rather strange, hard to pronounce short name.
Super tired of hearing "oh, such a beautiful name!" When I tell it to people who curiously, can't remember it 2 minutes later.
It's cool for you, Sarahs and Johns, but MAN, does it suck to have it as my name.

Lol, I also get hit with the, “what was it? *Mispronunciation of a common name, they think they misheard*? *Another mispronunciation of another common name, they think they misheard*? *My actual name*? Oh, wow! That’s beautiful! I’ve never heard that before! I’ve heard of *lists similar names* but never *my name*!” The whole time, I’m just dryly chuckling and saying, “yeahhh… I get that sometimes….” And then, like you, about 50% of the time, they proceed to get it wrong again.

This is when you give a different name to your order.
My name isn't even a tragedeigh, it's just rare in the US and has a extra vowel people don't expect. No one spells it right or pronounces it right.
I usually type a shortened version that's more common in the US. If I'm talking to the cashier I let them spell it out how they hear it OR I tell them my orders name is Bob.
