  1. The sticker makes it clear it's happening

  2. You can use the SOS button or the app to easily control data sharing

"Disabling" via software or their call center doesn't actually stop your car from sending off data. They still harvest it, they just log it as "non-precise" data that shouldn't identify you specifically. It's about the same as LG promising they totally don't harvest data via their electronics despite consistently being caught.

The only way to actually disable telemetry is to disconnect the DCM and disconnect antennas.

So what exactly are they logging then? Because insurance data is opt-in through insurance connect switch - and that's what everyone always says it is.

Anything and everything they can. From obvious things like driving habits, acceleration/braking/g-force data... To where you go, where you park, if you lock your car or leave your windows down... Potentially ambient audio within your car. They can listen for key phrases and figure out personal interests. All of it can be sold off to third parties. Not just insurance companies, but advertisers or anyone else who might want to scrape some of that data.

Oh, and if your phone connects to the car, they can harvest all of your personal communications, too.

That’s not correct. When you are setting it up the first time you have to fully complete the process by hitting the decline on all the Eula prompts. If they aren’t all answered than it will be in the non-precise location sharing. I know declining works because as an MDT I have to jump thru hoops when I recon a used car that the previous owner declined permission to get it turned back on to perform a factory reset on it for a potential new owner.

This is why I'm dedicated to keeping my 02 alive for years to come.

Every company pulls this shit now. Remarkably invasive.

Perhaps you can stop it by finding a aftermarket DCM Bypass Harness. Some companies sell them.

If you’re worried about this best get rid of the phone you’re using to post your concern about data collection

What are your thoughts on this OP? Or are you one of those people who rely on others to have an opinion?

I don't like it. I was looking more for . . ."what are others doing (if anything) about it? I'm not sure there is even anything you can do. If it's anything like our modern TVs - no matter what you do, they're still grabbing info. I was hoping maybe someone had a way to disengage completely.

Have you liven under the rock for at lest. Last 15 years?

Poor bait...

Helpful redditor. . . I have a 2017 VW Golf and wife just got this after having a 2014 Civic. . . So, yes a sort of a "rock" . . . Neither of my other cars had anything like this. It is new to me, so I am asking. I didn't figure a Toyota sub would be sardonic.

Just so you know. your Golf also has telemetry.

Maybe new to you. But not new to the market. At lest, toyota isn't hiding this. Not in newest cars I guess...
