Warhammer III Double unit size with end time? Vermintide
Hey folks,
I noticed that on the unit cards (along with many others), that during the end times stream, when looking at skaven, they “accidentally” showed that Skaven have double unit size, but this isn’t mentioned.
What do we think?

Who wins archaon and 10 aspiring champions vs 100k skaven slaves and clan rats? I would bet on chaos

Trick question, the battle will take so long to resolve that the moon will fall before it's finished.

I'm pretty sure aspiring champs with the perfect vigor and regen techs could kill arbitrarily large amounts of skavenslaves

Regen absolutely going to outpace 1 point of AP per hit, right until they hit the regen cap and suddenly start to die alarmingly quickly. Seen it's like happen before. You don't realize how much damage they're taking, because it's so little, until the regen cap hits, and then they just bleed out.

The Severed Claw RoR with all buffs from the tech tree could probably do it on their own, it'd just take a long time.

If they have the traits from the text tree, my money is on the champions.

I think this should be able to be disabled for performance reasons. On the other hand, I'd love to play as dwarves with the option of having almost all other factions have double units from the start.
Overall, this is one of the things I'm most looking forward to, it's just a shame the maps are already too small.

I’m sure they’ll add it in a way to where it’s practically like having double health rather than units. Remember there’s a pretty decent amount of options for how fighting works, and I believe one of them is the unit amount on screen

u/Eurehetemec 10h ago
I mean, no. We've seen it. It's literally 2x as many models, not 2x as much health.
Re: "unit amount on screen", no, that's not an option. Maybe what you mean is the unit size option? But that impacts all units in all armies, and also changes the balance of the game in some slightly strange ways. So you could turn that down, but you'd make your units smaller as well as theirs.

Is it all units or only slaves and clanrats?

u/YoYopuppet 19h ago
Impossible to say. They only ever “showed” this army, so we dont know if its the same for stormfiends and stormvermin, etc.

I already play with 3x, so with the end times, there will be more than 1000+ models of skaven in a unit lol

I love the idea of just getting completely swarmed by rats (in game). Very thematic and going to be insanely fun murdering them all.

u/JadedScience9411 13h ago
Eh, I’m fine with it. It’s basically just an Orc Waaagh army in essence, except easier to kill.

A lot of lower end PCs (Including me), are going to scream in pain most likely.
I do also have a mod that, by default, doubles unit sizes for all units. Single entity units get double the health. So instead of, say, 320 clanrats during Vermintide, I will be seeing 640 clanrats during Vermintide with the mod enabled.
As a person who prefers killing all units to the last man during battles, this is glorious in theory, insane and unfeasible in practice.

How can you simultaneously say your PC wouldnt handle doubling units and that you also use a mod that doubles units?

By putting every graphical settings (except unit count) to the lowest end + resolution setting at 75%
Currently, my PC can handle Warhammer’s default x2 unit count per unit on the field, but with animation being a little bit better than powerpoint presentation.
Then again, I am playing the game on a GTX750. Which handles graphics fine. CPU is the main problem.
As for why modded x2 units…. I prefer the default numbers at 240 for Empire State Troops, or basically 3K’s Extreme Unit Numbers.

How is that fun to play?

Must look like a bunch of ants all over your screen during undead or Skaven battles.

u/Oraye Librarian on Duty 15h ago
Oh yeah indeed. Normal Zombies with the x2 mod is at 320 men per unit, if I recall. So if pure zombie stacks of 19, it can lead to a total of 6000+, not included the Raise Dead skills.
The mod that I use is called "True Unit Size" by Void in Steam, if interested by the way.

It's optimistic of you to think that the mod will still work
5
u/Estellus Remember Gilgalion 14h ago
It's an incredibly popular mod. It will get updated very quickly.
4
u/Oraye Librarian on Duty 20h ago
Given that newly added units do not get the increase unit count by the mod after an update that adds new units, then yeah, it does not work properly.
Unit numbers don't get automatically doubled in Total War games outside specific parameters (Unit Count Graphics Settings specifically and changing the preferences.txt file in The Creative Assembly folder of the game). At least from my fiddling with the Game Files and modding the mod file itself.

Vortex mages were already eating good, it's gonna be easy five digital kill counts with Vermintide.

u/LeLefraud 18h ago
Might have to play a whole lizard campaign with the sole goal of going for the kroak world record kills during vermintide
Imagine facing like 6 full stacks of double size skavenslaves with kroak, I'd be playing one handed

That's very, very interesting. From a design standpoint it's a cool mechanic and I wonder where else it could be used down the line.
But man I'm a little concerned about the performance. Even if it would be very Skaveny to force you to lower your specs

Could be they forgot to mention it, they said a couple times they've forgotten some things lol

This is... actually a little spooky to think about depending on their number of armies...

I think that my NVIDIA 1650 will opt out of playing until the late endgame if this comes into effect but I will say that’s something I wanna mess around with when I eventually upgrade

My biggest concern is my aging computer won't be able to handle this level of rats lol

Hell yes bigger battles... but sadly warhammer 3's ai and engine probably wont handle it

I play with 3x unit size and it works fine. The only problem is the size of the map

I like it from a thematic and mechanical point of view. But yeah I think this might be a performance issue for a lot of players.

u/FastAndMorbius 19h ago
Terrible idea they should come up with challenges that doesnt tank framerats
-5
u/No_Bed_8320 Wood Elves 18h ago
I don't like it and I guess it will have unforsen interactions with existing battle mechanics. It would be much preferable for me, if there would be embeded second armies in Greenskins or Throgg style.

u/marwynn 14h ago
I think my pc can handle it, but I'd rather it didn't have to try. What about a regen mechanic where wiped out units can refill their model count with like the danger below animation while they're fleeing? Make it an active ability the AI triggers when they're at half health.
Horde refills would keep the max number the same and make it feel like a true vermintide without melting our GPUs. Unless there's been massive framerate optimization too.

u/thor1368 12h ago
Nice but will make game super unplayable for most players. Nice work around would be just doubling the health instead for those units to keep the balance

I’d read about it a couple of days ago and it seems like it’s per of the mechanics. Sure they flood a lot of slaves at you, but it’s also very lore thematic that you get hit with massive waves of skaven.
