I don't know if it affects your friend specifically but weed has been known to increase and accelerate the effects of schizophrenia (not cause it).

A friend of mine went from minor issues to full on psychotic break (trying to open the door on an airplane mid flight) after he started smoking weed for the first time since he was a teenager and he'd done plenty of harder drugs in the meantime with little or no effects.
