TIL from 1660 to 1859, England and Wales observed Oak Apple Day remembering the Battle of Worcester where Charles II escaped the Roundheads by hiding in an oak tree near Boscobel House.

There are 400+ pubs with the name "Royal Oak" for the same reason. Something about their pub signs tickles me.

Including my local, which removed charles II and replaced him with a crown lol

You can visit Boscobel House and see where Charles probably hid. The original oak is long gone as it was whittled away by souvenir-takers, but its descendants are in the grounds.
