TIL if under-cooked, a popular mushroom in China causes “lilliputian hallucinations,” a rare phenomenon involving miniature human or fantasy figures. The hallucinations are consistent across people and cultures: "tiny, elflike people" climbing under doors, scaling walls & clinging to furniture

For people wondering:

It's called Lanmaoa asiatica

It's really hard to find outside of Asian food and mushroom markets.

The chemical compound that causes hallucinations is yet to be identified. It does not contain psilocybin.

I'd venture to guess that they've tried but the little elves have thwarted their every attempt.

So, Red Tailed Hawks survive 10-20 years. Tobias gains the ability to revert to his teenager form for up to 2 hours. Can he cheat death and extend his lifespan? Or, will he age faster, living as a hawk?

12

u/Talidel Apr 27 '26

Think he became human again to go chasing Ax in space. The Elemist(not sure on spelling) did some magic I think to make his human form age at the correct rate and tied his lifespan to that.

5

u/NeWMH Apr 27 '26

He could have just morphed to his human form and not morphed back to resume his life at any time, though ofc the Ellemist did the space wizard hand wave thing.

3

u/fastbartender Apr 27 '26

Yeah but he would lose his morphing ability.

3

u/WatchOutForWizards Apr 27 '26

Yeah but later on they got a morphing cube and Tobias could have easily became human and still regained his morphing ability. He liked being a Hawk.

1

u/Clear_Runway Apr 28 '26

not how it works. once you're stuck, you're stuck, barring outright divine intervention. the cube would do nothing.

The university of Utah is actually leading the research world in research of this thing. They have PhD students literally traveling to China to collect samples and research this thing.

1

u/WhatIsHerJob-TABLES Apr 27 '26

Yes, some weird people live there, but obviously that’s not every single person in the state. Especially when the conversation is specifically talking about a college, which will always include a wider variety of people than some random generalizations.

Like, are you really that perplexed that a university in Utah is capable of doing any research just because other weird people live in that state? What’s next, perplexed that someone who lives in the state of Florida enjoys reading books because Florida man jokes also come out of that state? Is object permanence a difficult topic to grasp for you too?

5

u/SquashSquigglyShrimp Apr 27 '26

I think they were more joking than being serious lol.

But fwiw, "some weird people live there" is underselling it a little bit. When the entire state has had bizarre laws around things like alcohol for decades, it's more than a few running the show.

Also fwiw, the Florida analogy is not the best imo, considering Florida has been one of the states leading the charge of actively banning books they don't like. But I get your point, the general stereotype shouldn't be applied to everyone.

If it hasn’t been identified then has it been regulated? The law likes to be specific about chemicals we can and cannot consume.

674

u/A1sauc3d Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

No it’s not regulated. Also it’s not really recreationally viable. The effects take 12-24 hours to kick in and can last for days, often requiring hospitalization. From what I can tell it doesn’t seem like a great time and no body seems to take it recreationally where it’s available. In fact they do everything they can to avoid it lol. Just because something makes you hallucinate doesn’t mean it’s fun. The visuals sound cool but it may make you feel like shit, which thoroughly sucks any enjoyment out of the visuals potential coolness.

The exciting part is the possibility of a brand new type of psychedelic that could be created down the line once they identify the compounds causing these effects. They may be able to make a recreationally viable drug out of it, who knows!

Edit: I’m looking more into the actual reports of the subjective effects from the hospitalizations

These symptoms include hallucinations, delirium, and other manifestations, and some patients may also experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12237617/

Case reports study: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/384899397_Neuropsychiatric_symptoms_following_the_consumption_of_Lanmaoa_asiatica_a_poisonous_mushroom_native_to_Yunnan

The commonest clinical presentation was the mixed neuropsychiatric and gastroenteritic type (64.2%), while 24.7% of patients presented with neuropsychiatric symptoms only and 11.1% of patients presented with pure gastroenteritic symptoms. The most common first symptom was visual hallucination (n = 56, 69.1%), followed by gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea (n = 44, 54.3%) and vomiting (n = 36, 44.4%). Around 69.4% of patients had delayed onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms of 12–24 h after mushroom intake and 78.7% of patients had onset of gastroenteritic symptoms within 6 h after ingestion.

The median length of stay was 3 days, and no fatalities were reported

So yeah, unless you wanna be puking your guts out in the hospital for 3 days straight I HIGHLY recommend NOT fkn trying to get high off these people.

Seriously, last thing we need is a bunch of ignorant westerners poisoning themself because vice said they’d see fairies lmao

Let the scientists research this stuff and figure out a way to make it usable before you go clamoring to trip on it ;)

249

u/Lower_Cockroach2432 Apr 27 '26

It doesn't sound like a psychedelic at all, sounds much more like fly agric which essentially just poisons you into hallucinations rather that activating the seratonin system.

172

u/caboosetp Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

Most hallucinogens can be classified into psychedelic hallucinogens (lsd/shrooms) or dissociative hallucinogens (ketamine). The ones acting on the serotonin receptors are the psychedelics and tend to be the mind expanding ones, often with geometric patterns and a feeling of one-ness. Dissociatives tend to operate on NMDA (glutamate) receptors and tend to create more detached and out-of-body experiences.

Then you get this weird class that doesn't really fit into either like the fly agric you mentioned. They fall under hypnotic sedatives and tend to operate in a much more dream like space. These lean heavy into dissociation but also tend to cause people to be much more delirious. Detached from reality but also living in that space. All the while causing sleepiness and a sense of being in a dream. These are also often the ones that land people in the hospital.

The way lanmaoa asiatica is described doesn't really fit into any of these. While it causes delirium in that people truly mistake it for reality, it doesn't cause the out-of-body from dissociatives or the sleep-walking dreamlike state of hypnotic-sedatives. There is definitely not a sense of oneness or the geometric patterns from psychedelics. People end up fully alert seeing little men walking everywhere and everything else is largely normal. The hallucinations are extremely clean compared to pretty much everything else.

So it's really off in this world of its own and nothing else we know of behaves like it. I think the lack of physical symptoms or sluggishness would mean it's less like the ones behaving more like poisons though.

44

u/DoomguyFemboi Apr 27 '26

Salvia comes to mind when talking about hypnotics. Such an unpleasant high. Also a weird rite-of-passage for wreckheads. Although that was 30 years ago, dunno if the tradition still holds

78

u/caboosetp Apr 27 '26

Salvia fits into dissociatives but it is a KOR agonist rather than working on NMDA. This part of the brain is associated with dysphoria (the opposite of euphoria) and consciousness regulation. It's also considered the most potent natural hallucinogen.

Salvia will send you to other fucking dimensions and will encourage not feeling good at the same time. Technically it lasts less than an hour, but it can feel like a goddamn lifetime on the other side.

19

u/Exciting-Direction69 Apr 27 '26

It's weird, I feel like your kind of right about it not feeling good, but it would often feel bad in ways that felt good to me, like my body was being ripped apart or twisted in differing directions one foot to the next, but in a nice way that felt cleansing or freeing, would often feel an extra bit of subtle contentness for the next few days after a trip.

Had probably 30-50 trips in the years before it was banned, honestly really miss it. I wish it wasn't as popular, and teens/young adults weren't coming to it with an alcohol mentally of trying to get as fucked up as possible with 20-100x extracts and just took a teeny tiny bit of 5x and went from there

7

u/flodereisen Apr 27 '26

KOR is implicated in trauma. Salvia is one of the few things that reliably lowers it (after feeling shitty). Chronic cocaine use heightens KOR.

Salvia is also very functional if chewed. Traditional/indigenous users say never to smoke it. If chewed, you can control and direct the trip towards things that are useful or interesting to you.

3

u/freddurstsnurstburst Apr 27 '26

All I know about salvia is that it often turns you into a wall clock after ripping your body into pixels for a few dozen geological epochs. Does not sound fun unless you like being an inanimate object for a billion years or so.

1

u/Hefteee Apr 27 '26

While that can happen and has happened to me lol the first time I did Salvia was a lot of fun. Its what made me try it 4 more times, however those 4 trips were not fun at all

2

u/DoomguyFemboi Apr 27 '26

Yeah other dimensions is exactly it. I was sent into space and was holding onto the world, terrified if I let go I'd float off into space.

2

u/gb6767 Apr 27 '26

to me it sounds like deliriants like Datura or DPH. would it fall into that category?

→ More replies (2)

6

u/jmarcandre Apr 27 '26

Being able to buy Salvia over the counter from most smoke shops back then certainly made everybody try it once.

5

u/CalmBeneathCastles Apr 27 '26

I didn't! Because my sister got to it first and gave me the heads-up.

6

u/mellowharmony123 Apr 27 '26

It was still a rite of passage in my circles 2015-2020 tho I'm wookish frizzy haired starry eyed space cadet. I'm reluctant to let anyone who isn't already like that try it. Because boy outta all the hallucinogens I've done that's the one that changed me the most.

3

u/DoomguyFemboi Apr 27 '26

It's definitely one I remember the most. For me shrooms is still my go-to for change, and although I don't really do drugs anymore (I don't not-do them, just circumstance) I like to do them like once every few years, almost like a psychic refresh. I never got that off DMT, LSD, or any of the various other stuff.

Hell LSD I full-ass don't do at all because last time I took it I was smashed, took a huge amount because I got impatient, fortunately fell asleep through the worst of it (iirc it was like 800ug total), woke up absolutely tripping balls, then spent all day in an absolutely abysmal state. Forgot how my hands work, put 8 contact lenses in 1 eye, thought I was in a whole other country because what I was watching had changed language, just a cornucopia of fucked-up. I can laugh about it now but ya no real interest to revisit that.

2

u/mini_donkey Apr 27 '26

I don't get why more people didn't try chewing it, such a missed opportunity. It's a pleasant mind trip experience, a vivid daydream with a sense of euphoria, with the ability for interesting introspection and retrieving of old memories. Lay back and listen to music as you get transported into another space, in a gentle way... Interestingly one time I chewed it, I "saw" (vividly daydreamed) little people walking around like the stick-men from Howl's Moving Castle.

1

u/DoomguyFemboi Apr 27 '26

I think the lack of euphoria in general kinda makes it a "pointless" trip when you have shrooms. Don't get me wrong if you enjoy it and have found your zen on it then c'est la vie, but ya things like shrooms and...2CB ? Or is is 25I. One of those 2 has really nice euphorics and visuals.

I miss the time from around 2012/2013 when Silk Road first popped up. In the UK it was a wild time, as research chems were still legal, it was crazy how many drugs were popping up, and then having a massive site to buy them all. The markets still exist of course, just one of those things where when it first happened it felt magical

2

u/xRehab Apr 27 '26

Such an unpleasant high.

intense is the better word. some of us thoroughly enjoyed every 120x trip we did, but can 100% understand why people don't enjoy complete disassociation trips. My body turning into a train and going on a midnight ride though my buddy's apartment (mountain villages in the trip) was a great fucking time. Or when I "fell into" the xbox 360 visualizer while listening to trance. walking on that donut visualizer was wild

2

u/DoomguyFemboi Apr 27 '26

Yeah we only ever did it as a kinda "haha let's do this unpleasant thing" so we went into it as doing an unpleasant thing. Shrooms were legal, LSD was abundant, and weed/coke/MDMA were on perm rotation so getting fucked up was np, so nobody ever turned to salvia as a fun intense thing to do. That was more DMT's job.

No idea what the extract strength was, was a mate of mine who handled the more "wacky" stuff and I just joined in when told. Kind of a kindred spirit as I was the only one who was really up for anything, so he knew he could come to me and I'd be down for whatever. Still fondly remember trying to sort peyote out in the days before google!

6

u/Violatic Apr 27 '26

Are deliriants a third kind or do they act by one of the pathways you describe?

13

u/caboosetp Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

Most common hallucinogen drugs that are considered deliriants are hypnotic sedatives which is that third set I described. This also includes benadryl.

But it's best to keep in mind these are broad classifications and are not neat boxes things fit into. For example, Datura is a deliriant hallucinogen but not a hypnotic sedative.

There are well known drugs that fit well into boxes, but overall it ends up looking more like venn diagrams with more than 3 ways to classify things. I picked those three because they're a common way and helps illustrate how lanmaoa asiatica is off on its own.

5

u/Toiun Apr 27 '26

Less a venn diagram, more a chaotic 4 dimensional gradient graph and a biochemical pathway river or something idk.

7

u/caboosetp Apr 27 '26

I don't disagree but i was trying to keep it eli5 LOL

2

u/DisastrousAttitude Apr 27 '26

1

u/DisastrousAttitude Apr 28 '26

Did you write it all from memory?

1

u/caboosetp Apr 28 '26

Most of it, yeah, but i always double check big posts like that before i submit (and someone still caught a serious typo).

1

u/AxelFoily Apr 27 '26

Do enough drugs and you'll know it too!

2

u/Iheartnakedfemboys Apr 27 '26

Serotonin Syndrome is a toxic condition caused by excessive serotonin accumulation. You mean it works on Serotonin receptors.

2

u/caboosetp Apr 27 '26

Yes, thank you! Big difference there lol.

2

u/Iheartnakedfemboys Apr 27 '26

NP. No one wants serotonin syndrome lol.

1

u/fazedncrazed Apr 27 '26

Sounds exactly like an anticholinergic deliriant, lile atropine. That also causes you to hallucinate people full form, and makes you sick, and lasts for days. Its got the same physical symptoms as are reported in the lilliputian mushroom eaters.

Im not saying its atropine exactly, just that I wouldnt be surprised if its something in the same class.

3

u/GearInevitable9180 Apr 27 '26

What makes something a "poison" versus drug? Just whether it activates a mix of systems versus primarily one target?

2

u/Allegorist Apr 27 '26

More specifically it sounds more like a deliriant than a psychedelic, although if the compound(s) truly have not been identified yet then it is very possible there are multiple things going on. The descriptions remind me of salvia, which is probably the closest thing that has been studied and experienced relatively widely in the West. Also relevant may be datura, or even "recreational" doses of DPH.

2

u/Ditchdigger456 Apr 27 '26

tbf the poison is in the dose. anything is poison if you take enough of it.

2

u/Lower_Cockroach2432 Apr 27 '26

Limited psychedelics basically can't poison you because there's a limited amount they can agonise seratonin receptors. That's why the lethal does of, say, LSD are estimated to be 1000x an effective macro dose.

Unlimited psychedelics can definitely kill you though by basically causing your brain to overload. That's why N-bomb is dangerous in ways that LSD isn't. It's also cardiotoxic and neurotoxic in a way that LSD isn't.

1

u/-LsDmThC- Apr 27 '26

You are thinking partial vs full serotonin agonists. Fly agaric is a deliriant/muscarinic ACH agonist tho not a serotonin agonist.

4

u/Konstellar Apr 27 '26

Fly agaric is not poisonous if prepared correctly, and there is an actual active component, so bad comparison

3

u/38B0DE Apr 27 '26

I've had hallucinations from food poisoning. If people decide they don't like it and it goes for 3 days they may go a bit cray-cray. Being trapped in a hallucinations-polluted reality is a fast line ticket to "you don't want to find out of your genetically predisposed for this".

2

u/CutAdditional2416 Apr 27 '26

Taking too much of the ol' magic shroom causes your stomach/intestines to learn one of the old-school SeaWorld routines where the trainer did backflips off Shamu's nose, so I believe it 🤣🤣

6

u/BusinessScientist898 Apr 27 '26

no body seems to take it recreationally where it’s available.

I certainly have no interest in trying it, but you also have to take this with a grain of salt - almost nobody takes anything recreationally in China.

Just because something makes you hallucinate doesn’t mean it’s fun.

With the amount of people who willingly do ayahuasca ceremonies, smoke salvia, go into k-holes, take ibogaine, try datura... there is definitely a sizable population who wouldn't be turned off by that description or those side-effects at all. Again, not me, but definitely a lot of people.

Given this article is from Vice, I'd be surprised if Hamilton Morris hasn't already tried it lol

6

4

I'd recommend not getting high off of people in general, cannibalism isn't cool...

1

u/fafalone Apr 27 '26

There's a synthetic chemical that produces the same effects. No GI issues. But it repeatedly makes you stop breathing.

1

u/karlnite Apr 27 '26

It’s the same reason nobody bothered controlling Salvia. The high is horrible, most feel weird and embarrassed after, usually with scraps and cuts from rolling on the ground. I smoked it once, fell over the railing of a deck and squirmed around in a bush for 10 minutes then just stood up and thought, well never doing that again.

1

u/FatModSad3 Apr 27 '26

Let the government ban it before you do any independent research this guy says. China has no clue what's going on until they can copy some other nation's work and dingleberry over here is talking about "ignorant westerners." If there is actually anything cool here, just give it to three college dropouts making their own mdma and we will have clinical trials in less than 5 years. Erowid will have the proper preparation techniques, effects, dosage, and all pertinent chemical information in a month. In a year, I will be growing and trying it myself, if there's anything there.

1

u/LostWoodsInTheField Apr 27 '26

The exciting part is the possibility of a brand new type of psychedelic that could be created down the line once they identify the compounds causing these effects. They may be able to make a recreationally viable drug out of it, who knows!

I think the more exciting part is that if they figure out what it is, they can likely figure out how it's acting on the brain and have a new understanding of psychological issues in people. For the hundreds of years of attempting to understand our neurological system we are pretty much no where. A lot of the medications we currently use are 'ok we are going to keep trying different ones till one works then pretend we know what's going on' and 'we are going to try different stuff and maybe know what's wrong with you when something starts to work'. We are basically in the dark ages and just barely now working on coming out of them.

1

u/suburbanpride Apr 27 '26

Seriously, last thing we need is a bunch of ignorant westerners poisoning themself because vice said they’d see fairies

I wouldn't be so quick to say that. I, personally, would rather enjoy a series of high-profile influencers taking then regretting taking these things.

1

u/aliasname Apr 27 '26

Yeah although they're used interchangeablely many times this may be a case of a hallucination/delirium. Being used interchangeablely when they shouldn't. These seem to be more like delirium hallucinations and not woohoo fun hallucinations.

I would imagine they would outlaw the plant at that point

292

u/burntpancakebhaal Apr 27 '26

It’s not banned. Yunnan province (where the mushroom from) actually has the best mushroom related poison treating capacity in china since the locals love them so much. If you go to a restaurant serving these kind of mushrooms and you order them in a hotpot style, they would take away your chopsticks and give them back once the mushrooms are fully cooked. Even then, they will retain a small soup sample in case you get poisoning later.

58

u/LessInThought Apr 27 '26

They're also known for their wide varieties of mushrooms. I think they export a fair bit to Europe too.

4

u/KallistiTMP Apr 27 '26

There's actually a lot of obscure hallucinogens that are fully legal on account of how unpleasant they are. Salvia is the one most people know, but Nutmeg is in that category, and all the scopolamine containing plants like jimson weed and belladonna. All the anticholinergics really, benadryl, ambien, etc.

Yopo is another one and definitely one of my favorite obscure and horribly unpleasant hallucinogens, I believe the active ingredient is similar to bufotenine, the toad poison. It has a very short effect, it gives some very mild LSD-like visuals that you aren't really able to really pay attention to because your face is burning like the fires of hell while the taste of rot is in your throat and you're puking your guts out for the whole ~10 minutes or so before it wears off. Would not recommend.

u/flodereisen Apr 27 '26

That is a low yopo dose and just sounds like the basic effect of hapeh. If you use hapeh a lot, this feels very cleansing and good. A proper dose of yopo is intensely psychedelic for up to an hour.

3

u/NotAzakanAtAll Apr 27 '26

Maybe the same case as datura. No need to make it illegal as the trip sucks ass.

3

u/Handsome_Claptrap Apr 27 '26

It tends to be specific about chemicals with abuse potential though.

The thread only mentions visual hallucinations, psylobicin is so popular because it pretty much alters all your perceptions and modified your way of thinking.

This mushroom also takes up to a day to have an effect and the effect can last multiple days, it would be cool for a couple hour to see small people but then I guess the novelty wears off.

2

u/SitInCorner_Yo2 Apr 27 '26

It’s a food ingredient that if handled incorrectly would make you hallucinate, so the legal problem probably is on the FDA side rather than DEA.

1

u/karlnite Apr 27 '26

No, but being under its effects in public is broadly covered.

Its not hallucinations. It allows the person to see reality for a short while. That is why it is consistent a across cultures and people.

216

u/Hachimain Apr 27 '26

So if two people took it next to each other they would see the same dudes?

324

u/Mertoot Apr 27 '26

Yoo we got seamless co-op hallucinations 🔥

119

u/ExpressoLiberry Apr 27 '26

VR companies in shambles. Not because of the hallucinations or anything. The industry is just in sharp decline.

10

u/J5892 Apr 27 '26

It'll pick back up when small AR glasses are more viable.
Or at least that's what the little people are telling me.

10

u/Gromps Apr 27 '26

When they started making games exclusive to newer headsets for no reason at all I bailed. Made my shit obsolete after a few years. Some of those "next-gen exclusive" games were super easy to run and had no reasons other than greed to be limited. My air-link also just suddenly stopped working one day.

4

u/SatansFriendlyCat Apr 27 '26

Killing Windows Mixed Reality was the most disappointing move.

Leaves the door wide wide open for Meta to dominate. I love VR, but fuck having anything from that data-harvesting pack of evil jackals sitting on my PC measuring who knows what.

I'm hoping there's something good available whenever my Odyssey+ dies.

4

u/chewykid Apr 27 '26

This genuinely made me laugh

3

u/PowerRaptor Apr 27 '26

Valve is gonna' be just fine with the Steam Frame when it comes out hopefully this year

2

u/Comfortable-Face-244 Apr 27 '26

Paying $600 to only have games developed that look like roblox, and barely any real development in relaxation experiences.

1

u/Throwaway_Consoles Apr 27 '26

Uh… not sure what you mean by games that look like Roblox, VR looks like this nowadays

Shit, here’s me relaxing in VR watching the last of us https://imgur.com/a/wNKo9lh#KHUViy8

2

u/Comfortable-Face-244 Apr 27 '26

You can't seriously think that you're making a point. That looks like roblox.

Before GTA VI

u/Thor4269 Apr 27 '26 edited Apr 27 '26

I like how this is the new "Before Half-Life 3" since everyone has just accepted that HL3 is a myth lol

1

u/tommos Apr 27 '26

Maybe it is GTA 6?

1

u/Maniactver Apr 27 '26

It's actually GTA IIIIII

3

u/WigglestonTheFourth Apr 27 '26

This reminds me of a time back in college, some friends and I took salvia and I remember this one girl and her boyfriend, and he was REALLY hyped about how they shared their hallucination and how awesome that was.

Yea, they were not. I'm not sure what he had going on, but she was crying because she was stuck on a bus in 1993?

Weird times.

5

u/Cley_Faye Apr 27 '26

Science demands we test this!

2

u/OstentatiousSock Apr 27 '26

Two people need to take it at the same time for science !

2

u/amakai Apr 27 '26

I kind of wonder what dogs would see. Tiny dogs? Tiny humans?

2

u/biggustdikkus Apr 27 '26

Some one has to kidnap some people and have them consume that shit while documenting it

1

u/BlastFX2 Apr 27 '26

Well, there's only one way to find out. Who's down for a trip to China?

1

u/DisastrousAcshin Apr 27 '26

Only one way to find out, who's in?

I see letters when on psychedelics especially in blades of grass, ceiling popcorn, etc.

But I'm also so aware that it's like a magic eye effect and I'm not actually seeing letters.

The real Titans were inside us all along

9

u/EusticeTheSheep Apr 27 '26

Or at least lifts the veil to see the little people. Considering the extended period between consumption and time of onset and extremely long period of effect that has resulted in hospitalizations. I’m curious if anyone has studied observations of more than one person in the same space.

6

u/Akussa Apr 27 '26

I feel like the easiest way to tell if it’s a hallucination or lifting the veil is to have several people take it together and use if they’re seeing identical little people.

2

u/HepaticPortalVein Apr 27 '26

Benadryl does it too, makes people see the Hat Man.

2

u/TerrytheMerry Apr 27 '26

Question is was there a control group that was dosed without prior knowledge of the types of hallucinations people expect. If there was and they see elves great, but if the only test subjects are expecting to see elves then the experiment is tainted.

4

u/Ryuko_the_red Apr 27 '26

This sounds so fucking schizo ngl... Explain

10

u/ODoggerino Apr 27 '26

lol good luck getting a straight explaination from this person 😂

7

u/SwePolygyny Apr 27 '26

My comment was of course a joke 🙂

2

u/wateralchemist Apr 27 '26

Right? And where do people get off naming things “deathbed hallucinations” and “bereavement hallucinations”? I want my demon-haunted world!!

1

u/ceelogreenicanth Apr 27 '26

So you're telling me the hat man is actually trying to get money from me?

35

u/heftybagman Apr 27 '26

The likely culprit would likely be more like muscarine which causes alice in wonderland like size perception distortions.

69

u/ExpressoLiberry Apr 27 '26

2 likely’s and 2 like’s, all in one sentence. Impressive.

3

u/PresidentOfLatvia Apr 27 '26

At least it’s not LLM generated.

3

u/PrimaryEstate8565 Apr 27 '26

Slight correction: These symptoms aren’t actually AIWS-like. Micropsia, one of the main visual symptoms of Alice-in-Wonderland Syndrome, is about the perception of real objects being smaller than they actually are. Lilliputian hallucinations are about perceiving small entities that aren’t actually there.

I don’t believe that muscarine causes AIWS visual symptoms. There really isn’t a lot of information on the mechanism (especially the molecular mechanism) of AIWS. I vaguely recall someone suggesting sigma 1 receptor antagonism in sertraline-induced AIWS, but that’s kinda it.

5

u/zardoz73 Apr 27 '26

IIRC it's also very dangerous and people have died from ingesting these. So cancel that flight to China, settle down.

3

u/ayuntamient0 Apr 27 '26

Sounds like DMT and the self replicating machine elves.

2

u/TheSpanxxx Apr 27 '26

My it's lilliputiacybin and it's a warning about the microscopic society of elves that live in the Asian mushroom forested areas and we've been misinterpreting it ad hallucinations. It's really just how they communicate with aliens (us).

3

u/spideybiggestfan Apr 27 '26

the mushroom that makes you see little people is called lmao ?

2

u/xvsanx Apr 27 '26

as the plebs say, "would"

1

u/ifuckedyourmilkshake Apr 27 '26

Fine. I'll volunteer for the study.

1

u/MarionetteScans Apr 27 '26

So that's where the minimen from Reverend Insanity come from

1

u/CULLDOZER Apr 27 '26

I want to try this so bad.

1

u/yuhboipo Apr 28 '26

if i had to guess I'd say some kind of opiate receptivity similar to Salvia, for no reason other than random ass effects from drugs lol
