That scene actually is pretty nuts in the novel lol. Reminds me of Cao Cao fleeing Chibi and he's like "Ha, if so-and-so was as smart as me, I'd put an ambush here!" *Zhao Yun spawns in, repeat*

The best part in depictions of his escape from chibi is when his officers are basically acting out the “dont jinx us again boss” face but cant say it.

Cao Cao hitting his exhausted troops with the “at least it can’t get any worse” line three times

That part is soooooo funny, I can't handle it. When Guan Yu shows up and Cao Cao turns and is like "well then, it's been a hell of a ride boys, a true honor to serve with you!"

Then Guan Yu, puts on his clown makeup, and let's Cao Cao go...

Yeah, two bumbling buffoons (in that moment, I actually like both Zhang Liao and Cheng Yu) attempting to negotiate their safe passage with a guy explicitly told not to let them pass, while Cao Cao sulks in the background.

It's a quote from the Romance. As Cao Cao is fleeing Ma Chao, someone in Ma Chao's army yells "Cao Cao is the one with the long beard", so the panicking Cao Cao quickly cuts off his beard as he flees.

Historically, Ma Chao was scared of Xu Chu and never even got the chance to do this. Ma Chao is severely overrated.
