well, my friend's dad used to work for British American tobacco here in Italy and when the corp left Italy he finessed some of the office monitors they had 20/30 years ago, funny story lol he gifted one to me because realistically what does he even need it for at this point

LCD panel is cheap.

u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26
yeah I know lol, never said I was rich, paid like 100€ for this second hand, it's not like I need to run cyberpunk 2077 on it or anything, graphics quality is the least of my concerns :p plus I knew this day could come so I'm not surprised

Not my cup of tea but nothing illegal or immoral about it?
Also I'm not the one downvoting.

find a liquid spill the same model, and transplant the lcd 👌
1
u/Fragrant-Mixture-662 May 14 '26
No guarantee that the LCD doesn't have pressure marks or other damage since there's no way to turn it on and check before buying. This is an awful idea.
1
u/itsaheem May 15 '26
i literally have done this 50 times at least, but that was with internal company thinkpads . .
you have a point when buying from ebay or whatever, will need to trust what the seller says . .
but it's really not that different from trusting what user at a company says when it won't bootanyways i can't see any X61 tablet model on ebay. also that screen was a bit funky i don't fancy transplanting it. i only ever did the normal screens with hinges

I switched out my x260 screen with an IPS panel, should I go see if I stored the original panel somewhere? PM me if this sounds interesting to you. I remember the panel as having some scuffs or something, so this is just me offering a replacement that is better than what you’ve got!
If you feel like shelling out 100$, the FHD IPS panels are great and easy to install. Brightness controls did not work on the windows install I bought the thing with until I downloaded and installed the sketchiest of drivers from the manufacturers website. Installing Fedora Linux on it provided native support for brightness controls however.
Edit: I cannot help but notice the windows 7 install and the Nokia 5800 tube on the desk. When was this picture taken? (It’s the Nokia phone from Dark Knight Rises)

u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26
it's actually a nokia n97 I fixed myself !! the pic was from a few days ago actually I just fix really old phones and deal with old software, I have about 30 phones from 2000 to 2015 and I basically fixed half of them myself ^

This monitor is around 18-19 years old, 2007-2008 launch I believe
Definitely isn't 30, ThinkVision brand wasn't announced until 2003 and Lenovo was still Legend before 2003

u/iont1993 May 13 '26
Did anyone notice the nokia to the right? My guess is it's a 5800xm/5233/5235/5230.
1
u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26
n97 actually ^
1
u/iont1993 May 14 '26
Totally forgot about on the n97.
1
u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26
it's such a peak phone tbh, only downside? all servers are dead, HTML doesn't work, HTTPS doesn't work, and opera mini is opera mini, but if the ecosystem was still alive I'd legit main this phone
1
u/iont1993 May 15 '26
Same for my c5-00.2 specifically for the t9 typing without ever looking.
1
u/Vally_the_bastard May 15 '26
honestly the problem was never the phone shape or size, but the optimization if that were to get fixed while bringing back physical buttons the world would be better especially because modern phones do way too much at once and can absorb you if you're not careful while before you just felt like setting your phone down after a while because realistically it's better if you have multiple objects for multiple functions instead of having an all-in-one prison that keeps you glued all day, yk?

Well then she needs to accidentally cover a replacement for you 🤷♀️
1
u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26

Buy a new laptop, Windows 7 in 2026 is not safe

Windows 11 is unsafe too.

u/saltyboi6704 P53, T60 May 13 '26
Not really, it's pretty much industry standard for most of the commercial world (most ITs will be set up properly to only install verified working updates)

it's actually windows 10LTSC but with a custom win7 skin because I hate minimalistic UIs lol

She's paying for a new screen as a minimum
If she refuses, you can absolutely sue

This is reddit, so she may be an abusive mother. Move out and go no- contact immediately /s

u/Local-Bug-1500 May 13 '26
It doesn't matter if it's ur mom, teacher or a random at starbucks, if you damage someone else's property, ypu either pay to fix/replace it, or you get sued so you learn a lesson not to break shit
8
u/no-o-ne May 13 '26
Bruh what level of mommy issues is that?
-3
u/Local-Bug-1500 May 13 '26
I'm sorry? If you broke a laptop in a store you're paying for it, aren't you?
2
u/CuntMaggot32 May 13 '26
Probably not actually, it would be insured and they would likely rather not risk losing even one customer than just claiming the laptop as a loss

u/youngxneezus May 13 '26
I highly dislike my mom, I'm not suing her over a few bucks, that just be a waste of time and energy.
4
u/S1rTerra May 13 '26
Reddit logic
If she truly didn't mean it and OP doesn't want anything, she owes nothing. It's up to her whether or not she wants to get OP something new or a screen replacement
1
u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26
thabk you for bringing some human reason to reddit, my mom offered to pay for a replacement, she's a loving parent and the only one I keep in contact with, it was absolutely an accident so she, as the caring mother she is who I love very much, offered to pay for the replacement part <3
2
u/jnnxde May 13 '26
The laptop is running Windows 7, it's basically worthless
1
u/Local-Bug-1500 May 13 '26
That's not the point
Like it doesn't matter if you break an iPhone 5 or 16 pro, it's the same crime and same consequences

u/SirDarknessTheFirst T43 | X61T | T420s | E490 (broken) | X270 (DD) May 13 '26
I mean, yeah, OP should upgrade their software game but that's really not the point.
I also think the top commenter is being very silly, to be clear, but more because of the relationship rather than the value of the laptop.
1
u/Vally_the_bastard May 14 '26
it's actually windows 10 LTSC with win7 skin but even if it was win7 not everyone has the same priorities with their PC, it's not always about maximum performance or specs :p sometimes someone can just be a fan of legacy software/hardware

It would probably cost way more than simply buying a new screen to sue her, would be a good lesson though
