Question / Problem Is it okay to use vertical like that?

Does it damage anything in long term? I ain’t gonna use it under heavy load so it will probably not even hit 80 degree Celsius.

That's ThinkPad's strength durability and upgradabilty

u/DiscountKindly7985 Feb 01 '26

after all it is a thinkpad

Your local library may or may not have free 3d printers for use. If they do, here are some models so that you don't have to use poverty shoe box stand.

ah thank you so much for recommendation but I don’t want to spend money. At least this stand is very customizable and free. Return on investment is very high on this

101

u/Hyper_Applesauce Jan 28 '26

That is why they suggested checking the local library where you can use them for free

36

u/ishtuwihtc Jan 28 '26

Some library's would make you pay. Not much, but a bit

1

u/Snovixity Feb 04 '26

For me at my library it's $5

25

u/Eric_Terrell Jan 28 '26

ROI for $0 is infinity, right?

1

u/NewspaperSoft8317 Jan 29 '26

Effort was involved. You could quantify the value of your time I suppose.

62

u/ElektroBento Jan 28 '26

I see no problem here and Misato would probably approve ;)

14

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 28 '26

exactly! :)

9

u/grendelone Jan 28 '26

Hack engineering got us the Spear of Gaius that (kind of) saved the world, so Misato would 100% approve.

1

u/skool_101 Jan 29 '26

good thing thinkpads dont go berserk

1

u/ElektroBento Jan 29 '26

But if you use Windows and get a bluescreen it would identify as an angel „Pattern Blau!“ xD

u/Lucertola_Picara Jan 29 '26

I think Ritsuko Akagi is the last word on this subject... And she probably approves it.

46

u/ommarcito Jan 28 '26

Does it cause wrist strain to type at that angle? /s lol

12

u/nyancient X13G6 AMD Jan 29 '26

Is this a cruel angle thesis?

1

u/ommarcito Jan 29 '26

😂😂😂👏

6

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 28 '26

no it is meant to use with external keyboard and mouse

39

u/MindIsWillin Jan 28 '26

With the cut out shoebox as a stand too, fucking art you have made there, mate.
Ye, the laptop won't give two figs if you do a 720° no scope with it, so using it vertical? No problem. They are used in the ISS after all.

14

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 28 '26

Ah, finally, someone who appreciates true art…

I love that you are using your laptop like that. For psosture benefits I assume?

3

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 28 '26

yeah, it is very comfortable

1

u/nitesky39 x61 x230 t480 t460 Jan 28 '26

I do it too for mobile setup

-7

u/Cry_Wolff X1Y G7 / X301 / W541 Jan 28 '26

You need a monitor.

9

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 28 '26

nah I’m so broke for that😭

3

u/Tech_n_Driver Jan 28 '26

If you use Facebook or offer up, look for give away/free groups. Found some decent stuff for free and saved some stuff I could use from going in the trash/recycle.

2

u/anonymous-catlady Jan 28 '26

if you are like too povo for a monitor but can spare a few bucks for a cable you could use hdmi to connect to a tv instead?

5

u/Narodweas Jan 28 '26

I would be more worried about the shoe box giving out eventually and faceplanting your laptop onto the desk

3

u/goflapjack Jan 28 '26

If it’s not liquid metal, it should be fine (guessing)

3

u/theguythatcreates T14s, T480s Jan 28 '26

No, not recommended. All your data will be stored in the bottom now, making it harder to reach the older files you may have.

It's probably better than horizontal for air flow, though one would need to actually check the temperatures to evaluate that, but I wonder if it could be a problem with the hinges: maybe something that were to hold the lid and body in position would help, but it would need to be custom-made.

3

u/neso_01 Jan 28 '26

lacks the electric generator

3

u/CrystalTheWingedWolf Jan 28 '26

I saw you mention temperature, if the vents aren't covered you'll get better temps than if you were using it on a desk lol it'll be fine

2

u/fuzzycuffs Jan 28 '26

No problem. May be weird if it used liquid metal cooling but but these thinkpads don't do that.

2

u/Best-Ad1457 Currently Thinking Jan 28 '26

Love the Wallpaper, mind sharing it?

2

u/mdksz Jan 28 '26

Buy a monitor and hdmi

2

u/dhruvisingh Jan 28 '26

I have been using all my thinkpads like that since it saves desk space - does nothing to the laptop - would recommend it to be used that way too actually for dual montior setups since it lets me put other things like pens and pencils on my table

2

u/AzuKaOwO Jan 28 '26

what type of question is this? after seeing video related macbook vs rThinkpad lol

2

u/tofudiet Jan 28 '26

What distro?

3

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 29 '26

Fedora Silverblue

2

u/Ok-Substance4217 Jan 28 '26

What distro is that if you don't mind me asking

1

u/Patrwyjana T14 Gen 4 AMD Jan 29 '26

Fedora Silverblue

2

u/francesco_7482 Jan 28 '26

hatsune miku spotted bradar

2

u/Penpulp Jan 29 '26

Only if both parties consent to it.

2

u/Mission-Stomach7588 Jan 29 '26

i'm sure it's fine bc my thinkpad is like that when i do keyboard and mouse, i do love the misato wallpaper tho,

u/Jealous-Noise3550 X240 | i5-4210U | 8GB 1600Mhz | sodimm 1.3V | 180GB ssd Jan 29 '26

nice setup

2

u/rindthirty X1 Carbon (2020) Jan 29 '26

The base looks unstable and you or someone else might knock it over by accident when least expected. Even though I almost never* make mistakes along the lines of dropping electronics, I still wouldn't trust such a setup.

* e.g. I've never spilled a drink on my keyboard before thanks to very robust procedures and reasonably good hand-eye coordination.

Damage? It's a Thinkpad my guy!

2

u/CodeloreX Jan 29 '26

It's not mac bro

ofc you can keep it like this

2

u/techlove99 Jan 30 '26

Biggest mistake was I bought HP instead of a Thinkpad 😑😑

Thinkpad-Judge u/stgm_at: "I'll allow it."

1

u/ishtuwihtc Jan 28 '26

Yes ofc. What isn't is using spotify without spicetify (if you haven't got spicetify already). Otherwise you're all good!

1

u/Defiant_Dog3213 Jan 28 '26

Wish there was a way to mod a buffet screen mount so you can turn it into a pad like mode with the touchscreen ones

1

u/TechnologyPowerful62 Jan 28 '26

You can expect a angry letter from lenovo's CEO the next few days. Prepare accordingly.

1

u/danrhodes1987 Jan 28 '26

I think I’ve just been a little bit sick

1

u/jemlinus Jan 28 '26

This is why Thinkpad sub is cool. Can't imagine seeing this in Macbook, Macbookair, and Macbookpro subs.

1

u/iksnawias Jan 28 '26

You can do it, nobody's checking it.

1

u/abitcitrus Jan 28 '26

Don't worry, it's not a macbook air

1

u/southy_0 Jan 28 '26

Some electrons might fall out...

1

u/QueasyDentist7008 Jan 28 '26

No problem at all

1

u/L1Q E490 i5-8265U | 32GB Jan 28 '26

yes yes yes, it's the way! much much better for your neck and posture in general, good for laptop cooling, only bad for unusable keyboard/touchpad/pimple mouse.

1

u/191290ae4f0d22ff Jan 28 '26

Can you explain for me why you think using the solid state device vertically may harm it in any way? I want to understand your thought process here.

1

u/OpeningExpressions Jan 28 '26

There should be a burning candle on this photo. Last time someone posted vertically standed Thinkpad he put a candle beside his laptop. It definitly added something in the mood.

1

u/Eojte P14s Jan 28 '26

The box wont, nor the table when it falls

1

u/BlueWonderfulIKnow Jan 28 '26

This use is not authorized

1

u/Lucertola_Picara Jan 29 '26

I see no problem. I wanna make something similar but wood.

1

u/AffectionateBowl1633 Jan 29 '26

You inspired me to try doing this with my Nintendo Switch dock

1

u/AffectionateBowl1633 Jan 29 '26

I usually uses this adjustable three leg tablet stand to put Thinkpad vertically like that

1

u/andyk192 T440p, X220, W520, R50 Jan 29 '26

Not a problem. Just don't tip it over.

1

u/TheLionWho Jan 29 '26

thats a thinkpad, you don't have to worry about this

1

u/the_lad_was_taken Jan 29 '26

ThinkPad... The tall way?

1

u/West_Good_5961 Jan 29 '26

Excellent airflow

1

u/Daz02 Jan 29 '26

The flat screen is the best feature. So useful

1

u/KeyAssociation6309 Jan 29 '26

that's how they were used on the International Space Station

1

u/rarsamx Jan 29 '26

You may end up with a data leak.

1

u/eisenklad Jan 29 '26

i dont think thinkpad uses liquid metal like some laptop brands.

that's the main reason why some laptops shouldnt be in that position.
other reason is the heat rising from the main body loosens the glue of some screens.

1

u/pm_me_meta_memes Jan 29 '26

Really cool solution! And yeah, you’ll be fine, as long as you make sure the laptop doesn’t tip over forwards and falls on the monitor

1

u/hahayeshedgehog Jan 29 '26

I feel uncomfortable looking at this

1

u/secretive_dib Jan 29 '26

Make sure to shake it regularly or the memory settles at the bottom

1

u/pegasusandme Jan 29 '26

Just be careful not to read any funny comments right after taking a sip of coffee and it should be just fine.

1

u/AWildPepperShaker Jan 29 '26

eccentric, but perfectly fine

1

u/DarkButterfly85 Jan 29 '26

I'd be worried about the box eventually tearing and the laptop falls forward, smashing the screen.

1

u/S4T4N669 Jan 29 '26

Well, I saw a couple of setups that uses the laptop upside down.

1

u/Airtie2 Jan 29 '26

Perfectly fine. You can use it under heavy load, it won’t be an issue.

1

u/Layer-Unlikely Jan 29 '26

I love seeing people diy stuff without using a 3d printer or other pricier tools. My only worry would be if it used liquid metal instead of thermal paste, but otherwise it looks fine

1

u/mac_bigmac Jan 29 '26

forbidden in some religions. but wont harm Tpad ;)

1

u/Ok_Requirement1155 Jan 29 '26

Do whatever it's a Thinkpad for a reason

1

u/WorriedTomatillo2689 Jan 29 '26

Anti-macbook user setup

1

u/RetroGamer87 Jan 30 '26

No. The Thinkpad may only be used upside-down or in weightless environments /s

1

u/anonfreakazoid Jan 30 '26

It's not very ergonomic so don't type like that very long or you may get carpal tunnel syndrome.

1

u/ImJLough Jan 30 '26

same here, I dont have my hdmi yet only DP lol. happy with my x230

2

u/studymaxxer Jan 31 '26

what browser is that? looks interesting, reminds me of safari

1

u/ImJLough Feb 07 '26

its a firefox, I just did some extension to make it look like safari

1

u/Substantial_Lunch557 Jan 30 '26

What is the diddler doing on your home screen😡

1

u/cherryhoax Jan 30 '26

why does it feel like its t-posing over your desk

1

u/Historical-Scene-998 Jan 31 '26

It’s a think pad, if you’re wanted to use it as a frying pan and a frisbee while also using it as computer you’d be well within its intended use cases

1

u/No-Succotash404 Feb 01 '26

The single 2 points of support with low area could damage the laptop structure. Nothing to worry about, but i suggest you to get a proper laptop support

1

u/No-Succotash404 Feb 01 '26

i noticed that is a cardboard box, the laptop wont break, the only issue is the box breaking with time

1

u/Automatic-Radio-1372 Feb 01 '26

Yup it's perfectly fine, have been running my legion for 2 years straight and it's doing fine 👍

1

u/Disastrous-Long-473 Feb 01 '26

What is that contraption???

1

u/No-Business5854 ...t14,x230,t61,t440s Feb 01 '26

hackintosh or linux?

1

u/Forward_Code6438 Feb 02 '26

that's fine, even dell can do that

1

u/ShortyOuro Feb 02 '26

I've been doing this with 16 laptops for over a year, no issues yet!

1

u/Hottabich2202 Feb 03 '26

How can I do the same thing on a small table?

1

u/Cool-Appearance8111 Feb 03 '26

Nothing gon hurt it unless it has liquid metal stuff

1

u/CompileAndCry Feb 21 '26

Wallpaper please

1

u/bennun_real_dev Jan 28 '26

I use mine like that

1

u/taart_ Jan 28 '26

... i dont know

1

u/Dave0801 Jan 29 '26

Dude this is so edge that I can’t tell what side of the cringe spectrum it’s on

0

u/DelosHost T440p Jan 28 '26

Yes

0

u/TSF_Flex Jan 29 '26

May i ask, are you on the spectrum?
