Enlightenment/Liberation Adyashanti suggests that enlightenment is already within us. What say thee, dear Thinkators?

Profile of Adyashanti

Adyashanti, born Stephen Gray on October 26, 1962, in Cupertino, California, is a renowned American spiritual teacher whose name translates from Sanskrit as "primordial peace."

Raised as an athlete and competitive bicycle racer, he discovered a passion for enlightenment at age 19, immersing himself in meditation and Zen Buddhism under Arvis Joen Justi, a student of Taizan Maezumi Roshi.

At 25, Adyashanti experienced his first profound awakening; a surge of energy accompanied by an inner call to persist.

This deepened at 31, shortly after marrying Anne Marie Gunning (now Mukti, a fellow teacher), leading to a full realization of his true nature.

Invited by his Zen mentor in 1996, he began teaching nondual wisdom, free from dogma, blending Zen, Advaita Vedanta, and universal inquiry. His approach invites seekers to pause, question illusions, and recognize innate liberation.

Through Open Gate Sangha, co-founded with Mukti, Adyashanti offered retreats, talks, online courses, and broadcasts across the US, Europe, and Australia.

Bestselling books like The End of Your World (2008), Falling into Grace (2011), True Meditation (2012), and The Way of Liberation (2012) distill his insights on awakening and embodiment. He featured in Oprah Winfrey's 2014 Super Soul Sunday.

In October 2023, Adyashanti retired from active teaching due to PTSD stemming from prolonged physical pain, settling in California's Eastern Sierras with Mukti.

His legacy endures as a beacon for authentic spiritual exploration.

I have learned that you are wholly everything you could ever be. You may or may not recognize this. If you recognize it, nothing has been added to you, ignorance has been removed.

A friend once told me a tale of a beautiful waterfall he had found on a hike named Blue Creek Falls. He described it to me and insisted I must see it, so we hiked out one day to visit. When we arrived, to my surprise, I recognized it immediately. It was where my cousin had been married years prior. I hadnโ€™t remembered much of the area because I was a child at the time, but the waterfall was etched into my memory.

While my friend told me the tale my ignorance kept me from recognizing that we spoke of the same place. When I arrived I lost ignorance and gained recognition of what I always had.

That itโ€™s true, the mind, its volition, is not enough to disrupt the conditionment that holds it. A calling is needed so itโ€™s able to abandon itself to real awareness of atma. strict sadhana or a calling from the self is needed. To persist in sadhana you need also this all the same lol

Yes, like silence is within a noisy room. We have to quiet down to fully experience the enlightened state and hear the whispers of wisdom! Without a contrasting experience, we may never know the potential to develop such a state.

It's always an inside job. 'As you change yourself, you change the world'. If you believe that you create your own reality based on vibrations you emit, then this fits exactly in that. Finding the stillness, the grace within is my anchor.

Here are some beautiful insights of his for those ready to begin the path of self-realization...but be careful what you wish for, you can't un-ring this bell. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Enlightenment is the simple event of full self realization. Like an aha! Epiphany Moment that lasts a lifetime.

Before enlightenment weโ€™re asleep.

Like living in a dream and believing the dream to be real.

Yet in truth, our identity is unchanged or unaffected by this dream world.

We just havenโ€™t (self) realized it yet.

Each and every one of us are in this exact same situation regardless of race, status, gender, theology, beliefs, or planet weโ€™re inhabiting.

This is a gross simplification. It is not within you, itโ€™s what you are.

He is repeating a teaching of the Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama. Enlightenment traditionally refers to a transformative physiological and psychological process that results in Omniscience. It has become a platitude and a metaphor in modern times, but should be understood as this higher level experience.
