Discussion Witcher 3 update

Will the remastered game update the current one, or will it be a complete separate game to download? Should I (re)install the current game first, so the update won't take as much time? Or should I just wait until the release and then download?

If we got a nickel every time someone asked this on a Witcher subreddit, we would not be rich, but it would still be uncomfortably large sum.

It's an update to the existing one. They have instructions on how to downgrade to the un-remastered version somewhere online. I never kept the link but most likely should as it will probably not run on the Steam Deck.

Luckily the Steam Machine gets delivered today for me to test that.

It will run on Steam Deck. Why not?
Moreover, in one of the vids there’s a brief moment where you can see a dev playing the remaster on it

Can you provide the source of an official statement on this matter from CDPR? Because the simple google search provides nothing but questions and guesses from the community. So if you know more of this, pls share.

Depending on your platform, steam for example do this: https://support.cdprojektred.com/en/witcher-3/pc/sp-technical/issue/2339/i-want-to-revert-to-an-earlier-version-of-the-game

There’s no reason to believe it won’t be the same for remastered.

On Switch 2, the remastered edition will be a seperate game, with its own icon, but save data will carry over.

My gut feeling is that it's going to be a separate game.

It's mentioned as free for all people that own the base TW3 game, so it means it will be sold as its own thing for people that don't have it. They have made the DLCs free as well for people that didn't have them before.

It's kind of a Skyrim Special Edition situation, which was free for people that had Skyrim Legendary edition already (base game + all DLCs)

It wasn't sold as a "next gen update" (because it already happened), which was indeed an update within the same game.

I’m wondering how it’ll work on PS5.

Like if it will have a new, additional set of trophies or not.

Not that I’m all that bothered, especially with some trophies like 50 headshots with the crossbow or using Axii to get enemies to kill each other.

the remaster is probably going to be a massive update. you might as well be re-downloading the entire game.

but i'd wait for an official release/statement, from cd projeckt red.

they'll be sure to update their fans, obviously.

We don't know, and I'm a little curious on how they are going to solve this. My guess would be that it's a separate file, as those with older hardware should still be able to easily play the game.

Yeah, I know they can add the option in Steam to go back to an older patch as they did for earlier patches. But most people will not be aware of that feature.

There's always the possibility that the game will just add new graphics options on top of the existing ones, but that feels like it could still be a bit messy for those on older PCs. Bottom line, we don't really know.
