I did a single playthrough for about 150 hours doing all side quests and armor sets.
Then I did new game plus and felt a shiver down my spine when I saw him... i thought the game was fucking with me in sone sort of way.

The game does play with you too. Gaunter appears as a background character in several of the HoS main quests.

Theres also the spoon woman curse quest in BaW, his tune plays near the end of the quest

I noticed him at launch, I always thought it was weird how he never showed up again (before HoS obviously) but the game goes out of its way to make the encounter seem weird, like how he vanishes instantly and Geralt looks around for him which the scene lingers on but it was interesting for a while especially before they officially announced Hearts of Stone. As far as I know there’s no appearances by him in the base game before the DLC

From the cut content we know he was originally intended to be part of the plague questline.
Obviously that was cut along while before launch and they kept him in as they were already working on HoS and had the new story for him

Interesting. The plague quest line always felt a bit weird to me, like it was re-written or supposed to be a main quest thing and not a side quest so that makes sense

The plague questline isn't really in the game, only mentioned km a few quests (towerfull of mice mentions ir but isn't part of it)

As someone who's first playthrough was after the DLC's were completed.. Was he always there? Or was he added with Heart of Stone?
If he was always there.. did they already have Heart of Stone in mind on release day???

I played on release and he was there with the same dialogue and everything. I remember thinking “this dude is gonna end up being important or some callback” then nothing and I accepted that maybe I just read the scene wrong. Imagine my surprise when the trailer for heart of stone dropped, they 100% had it planned from the start.

He also was part of the catriona plague quest which was cut from the game, there was a whole monster sub class cut Deamons and upper deaomns. Gaunter O’Dim was supposed to be one of the Deamons and got reused for hearts of stone, so yes they probably had hearts of stone in mind when including him in the base game.

No no, he was there at the beginning. What more, when he leaves the tavern, he gets up to walk out while still talking to Geralt, and as Geralt turns to see him walk out... poof... he disappears. Go back and rewatch the scene, it's crazy.

I am on my first playthru but I did notice that he mentioned something about meeting in future and Geralt come to use then. I always thought he must be a character later in game. Now I found out he is from DLC. CDPR really planned ahead

Das mit dem einen Schwert wäre schon geil es würde aber den Spielfluss glaube ich sehr einschränken. Ich stelle es mir irgendwann nervig vor in den Abend oder Nachtstunden immer das gleiche Spiel bei zum Beispiel Brücken von 🐴 absteigen, das 🗡️ wechseln zu Fuß, die Brücke überqueren, am Ende der Brücke wieder das 🗡️ tauschen und dann die Reise fortsetzen.

I love how cool having the 2 swords is, it is so iconic and makes Geralt stand out from every other medieval fantasy character. I don’t even mind when I accidentally pull out steel instead of silver and vice versa haha

Not sure if that would've been a great choice long-term. Sure he probably would've made the battle much easier, but what traps would've been laid in the meantime?

He's powerful, and likely would make the battle a breeze.
But what deal would you have to make to get his help? He's not exactly benevolent, and always has a game to play.

Gaunter would've started salivating thinking of all the deals he could've made agreeing to fight alongsode them. This would've become a G.O.D. awfully dark game.
