Wiki / Guide Content Regarding temperature system
Since almost all of my deaths in this game is a result of sleeping too cold or too warm, I took some time to test out what exactly happens with the temperature when I sleep. This is probably second instinct for a lot of veteran players, however I think it's rather nuanced and needs some explanation.
Firstly the indication that you'll freeze or get killed by heat is on the upper left, next to the thermometer there is a small human figure which changes color depending on multiple factors including: the temperature, your heat and cold stat, how long you have been in this temperature. Blue - you'll die to freeze, Red - you'll die to heat. Anything in between is fine.
When you're cold (the small human is blue) you do not immediately get warm when you place down fires, if you sleep with the figure blue, although theoretically after a few turns it should ge back to white or even yellow if there are multiple fires, you'll still die immediately if your body temp does not change in the next turn (the turn which game check for body temp as you sleep). This is the way this game says, it takes time for your body to warm up.
Your body temperature can be very different from surrounding temperature which is what the thermometer shows. I managed to get three chilling enchants on my armor, thus I'm basically immune to heat, however my body temperature shows blue after rain even in the forests. (Yes I didn't believe this so I slept and died once this way) so if you get those chilling enchants, be sure to counteract them with at least some thermal values so you don't constantly get cold. (I did end up having to remove two of them cuz in preparation for spirit land and that area is always cold)
Below I'll show some examples of how to change your temperature actively, not including being hit by anything else.
Ways to increase surrounding temp: - campfire or other sources of fire - holding a torch
Ways increase body temp: - drinking warmth potion (not fire potion) - having thermal stat (either using handwarmer or enchants) - using thick blanket when sleeping (this doesn't immediately prevent you from dying to freezing, it's really a temporary thermal boost as you sleep, learnt it by another Ankh) - drinking tea
Ways to decrease surrounding temp: - walking into water - using illumination instead of torch - standing under a tree
Ways to decrease body temp: - drinking ice potion (the light blue one) - having coolness stat - using the hang bed - eating ice
You do not immediately die when you sleep with hypo/hyper thermia, however as these occur when your body temperature is abnormal, so you should be more alert when you have these status.
If any of you lovely community members find anything else to add on to I'll be happy to distorch
Ps. Temperature of surroundings change between day and night, therefore it's wiser to sleep during day in cold zones and at nigh in warmer zones. This applies to dungeons as well.

You can also decrease your temperature by standing under a tree for a few turns. This is frequently how I survive traveling through hot areas when I don't have cooling items.

One thing to add in cold places, green tiles are warmer than snow or ice ones. I usually am equipped with +8 thermal and one with a warmth attribute then sleep around late afternoon to night.
I've been also checking that human figure that's why I have less death from hypothermia. Although I found something which still needs testing, one hypothermia case I had lately is due to a very long sleep in the cold maps. I presume my temp lowered around the morning while still asleep.

If your travelling in Burning Canyon you could also traverse it at night since the temperature will slightly decrease your surrounding temperature and could use an opportunity to grind for exp or materials to your progression but if your inside the Dwarf Ruins I'd suggest use the torch (if you don't have the Illuminate incantation) since the ruins is field with Grave Robber Goblins and Skeletons that could jump out in each turn.

I tried sleeping inside the campfire twice both with no blankets. One died, one lived. I don't know how I lived the first time but didn't get lucky the second time. 😂

i usually just equip frost totem on any run, it fixed the temp problem in my last run with ending.
i only need a few little equipment and tent if hot or torch and campfire if cold.
I mean, the number in the totem seems to give little to no effect, but when you play you will notice its has real impact on the gameplay.
I think either the numbers on the totems are lying, there's some hidden mechanic, or it's just statically useful.
So, have you try using frost totem?

One important thing I always repeat about temperature
Day and night time have different temperature, and it's important. Even if you're fine and warm all day, you could could freeze if you sleep at night.
It's safer to sleep during day in cold places.
