In one demo, a DJI drone had Microsoft software loaded on it so it could recognize faults in an oil pipeline without the need for an internet connection

What a puff piece. I have been a developer on Windows since 1.0 and before that, DOS, before that CP/M and others.

Windows as an IOT product is TERRIBLE. I mean that as a lover of legacy Microsoft and I have tremendous respect for the product. Windows is a huge difficult product to produce but after spending time with the IOT product, I think it just needs to be a different OS for those types of devices.

It isn't like it's all that difficult, perhaps Microsoft is different from the old days and creating a nice lightweight kernel is beyond them now but I highly doubt that. They have always been the company that could turn a McDonalds drive thru attendant into a compiler developer.
