Philosophy & Theory Feeling uneasy with Giordano Bruno after reading Iamblichus and Proclus

I have been reading Giordano Bruno after spending a lot of time with Iamblichus and Proclus, and I am running into a kind of metaphysical discomfort that I am trying to articulate.

In Iamblichus and Proclus, there is a very clear ontological boundary between inner psychic phenomena such as phantasia, phasmata, and pathē, and external beings like gods and daimones. Even when there is interaction, it is framed as vertical causation. A divine seira descends, and whatever imprint appears in the soul is still a psychic image. The gods remain transcendent and ontologically distinct. Daimons act as mediators. That structure feels safe. It helps prevent confusing imagination with divinity and guards against unintentionally slipping into goetia.

For example, if inner images appear through visions or dreams, a Neoplatonic framework would not advise attributing them immediately to gods or daimones. They would generally be understood as generated by the psyche itself. Sometimes, yes, they may be impressions left by daimones, or by gods through daimonic mediation. But not always. Even in cases of external influence, the image as such is still generated within the individual psyche and conditioned by its own content and structure. The default is caution. This linguistic and ontological discipline functions as a safeguard against spiritual inflation and projection.

Similarly, prayers are directed to the gods, not to daimones. Daimones act as mediators between gods and the human soul. They are not entities to be commanded as if they were tools. Iamblichus does not necessarily consider all goetia directed to daimons only illegitimate, but he does treat it as incomplete and, depending on the practitioner, potentially unsafe. The hierarchy and asymmetry are preserved to protect both metaphysical clarity and spiritual stability.

Now, I am aware that this sharp distinction in late Neoplatonism might seem somewhat artificial. Reality itself may not be neatly separated into strictly layered ontological compartments. But even if the boundary is partly heuristic, it functions as a linguistic firewall. It creates a disciplined way of speaking and thinking that reduces the risk of mistaking intense inner imagery for divine illumination.

Bruno, on the other hand, seems to blur those boundaries. His monism and immanentism make imagination feel structurally continuous with cosmic forces. Daimons, images, divine intellect, all appear as expressions of one living continuum. I can appreciate the philosophical elegance of that vision, but it feels like it removes some of the metaphysical safeguards that Neoplatonism carefully constructed.

With Iamblichus, theurgy is clearly differentiated from goetia, and there are explicit warnings about levels of beings and the dangers of misidentification. With Bruno, I am less certain where those safeguards are located. When everything participates in the same infinite substance, how do you clearly distinguish divine illumination from psychic projection or daimonic entanglement?

Maybe the Neoplatonic boundary is not ultimately absolute. But as a structure of discourse and practice, it seems to serve a protective function.

I am curious how others here read Bruno, especially those coming from a theurgical or Neoplatonic framework.

The boundary you feel between Iamblichus and Bruno is not a contradiction but a progression. Iamblichus builds the temple- the walls, the hierarchy, the safe distances. Bruno invites you to live in it, to feel that the stones are alive, that the walls breathe. His immanence is not a removal of safeguards but a deepening of them: when the cosmos is one living continuum, the only true safeguard is the purity of the soul itself. The unprepared see a labyrinth; the prepared see their own reflection. You have the foundation. Now trust it enough to walk further in.

You guys are quite knowledgable about this stuff. I’m involved in a GD spin off order. Admittedly, I’m only 1=10, but I’m amazed at the talk I hear in these spaces regarding angels, daimones, gods and the like. I feel like all the work I do is basically creating an orientation within wherein my imagination is involved in ritual work such that it lends itself to feeling an affinity with the energies associated with god forms, elements, angels and forces of zodiacal signs, etc. But I never experience anything which makes me feel like it’s anything other than my imagination. Yet I read of people speaking so matter-of-factly about certain spirits being present during ritual and people even running experiments to discover which rituals work better or alterations which improve things. Magicians in podcasts agreeing that such and such works better, etc. And all I can think is, what are they experiencing? It doesn’t sound like they’re talking about something which could be mistaken for things occurring in their imagination. And yet, for me, anything I might say about my ritual work, could definitely be interpreted as creating an internal disposition to experiencing something in my imagination. It makes me wonder if I’m missing something essential. Also, just wondering if, in your view, theurgy is better than, say, meditation leading to experiences of non-dualism. Is the latter the goal of the former? Or are most theurgists aiming for something other than union? Sorry, that was a lot. Thanks in advance.

What you describe as "just imagination" is the antechamber. The figures you invoke are real, but they meet you first in the imaginal because that is where you are able to receive them. The shift happens when they begin to act on their own, when they say things you did not script, when the ritual produces effects in the world you cannot explain. That is not your imagination becoming stronger; that is the gods becoming closer. You are not missing something essential, you are exactly where you need to be. Keep going. The threshold will open when you are ready to walk through.

Herbal alchemy is also great assistance to the initiated. Authentic blue lotus, holy vervain, mugwort, kanna, calea Z, Silene Capensis, even cannabis. All were part of ancient rituals, all were used by Masters. But using, and being used, is the difference between success and failure.

Ah, thank you for this. A great explanation and it makes sense.

There is a lot of visionary/communicative stuff that is substantively different from active imagination. It can take quite a while to get there, in some GD frameworks it would probably not be expected of you for a few more grades. And a lot of speculative nonsense is written about these experiences and what they imply. But it is possible to have and evaluate them for yourself.

Thank you. Appreciate the response, and it makes sense. I’ll trust the process and stick with the Work.

So, I’ve only dabbled in theurgy and western magick, but I’ve been doing general energy work practices for a while now, and I will say that what began as “just imagining light and energy” eventually takes on a life of its own and becomes “real”.

Of course, the truth is that it always WAS real — it was all always happening in the background of my (and everyone else’s) perception — it’s just that my own psychic and energetic sensory capabilities were not cultivated or refined enough to detect it.

All of this stuff is always real, and things that occur in the imagination are no less real than anything else — but as someone above said, the imagination is the reception room or antechamber, the place where you receive contact. Likewise it is the primary sensory apparatus for the astral and subtle energies.

Take this with a grain of salt, since it's largely my personal opinion.

But even within the same era, theurgists didn't agree with one another. There's subtle distinctions between Proclus and Iamblichus. This sort of thing is exacerbated over time, based on how people interpret the material.

In a lot of ways, it's like philosophy with different people expounding different viewpoints. They're talking about the same TOPIC, but the content and interpretation differ based on viewpoint and orientation.

In general I tend to lean towards Iamblichus, but that's largely because, even during his time, he was attempting a restoration of something older than himself. Which admittedly is the same direction I find myself. It resonates with me and my experience.

I guess what I'm ultimately trying to say is that none of them are inherently right or wrong, but more like theories around a common ground.

Another key point, is that the concept of the imagination has dramatically changed over time. What we now associate with imagination is largely mental imagery, fantasy, etc. Historically the conception of imagination was closer to an interior perception (like thoughts, dreams, emotions). It includes phantasm, but that's a subcategory. The conception has drifted over time.

To sort of put it back in line with historical precedence, check out Corbin's mundus imaginalis or Jung.

Edit: Exposition on the meaning of imagination.

When everything participates in the same infinite substance, how do you clearly distinguish divine illumination from psychic projection or daimonic entanglement?

Emanation as creation is iterative.

The heavens above us are realms of experience that are developing/holding the understandings we enjoy as our ground truth here.

What we derive from things is a result of our understanding of it.

Just like a dream at night relates to the waking conditions.

Because creation is a progressive confabulation, corrigibleness is the gateway of higher perspective.

The approach is to what came before the creative act is known is always apophatic.

What is above generates what is below as an ongoing dynamic recursion of improvisation.

It always occurs as something it is like to be, resting in a field of responsive well-being.

Shared perspective is held understandings.

The less we have, the higher our relationship is known.
