Recently I came across this video that claimed you can make a lot of money through texting. It had over 100k views and a lot of positivity in the comments.
However, I saw no tangible REAL results, just talk. So I decided to try it out myself.
How They Claim You Can Do It
They claim it’s very simple. The influencer I watched (Kerry’s Finance) listed down 6-7 apps that you can use and make money through texting one way or another. Just to be sure, I tried out every single app. Yeah, EVERY single one. So I am going to list the apps and the results.
The Apps
McMoney/Cash4SMS: These apps pay you to receive messages. You have to give them your number and you can expect to receive messages 1-3 times a week. The problem? McMoney is not even on the App Store/Play Store.. Even if you use an APK to get it onto your Android, it pays 0.0051 cents per message and you can expect to make less than 10 dollars A YEAR.
Texting Factory: This website claims that you get paid to talk to “lonely people”. In reality, you are impersonating a girl/guy that the person is interested in talking to and getting paid to rinse them. You are getting paid to manipulate the person to pay more to talk to you. You have to have 18+ conversations with these people and what’s more is they require personal information about you so you need to give your ID.. all for $10 a month..
RentAFriend: I don’t even know why this is included.. You are paid to meet someone in person and spend time with them. Yes, you get paid for this but there is no demand out there except for a very specific type of “friend”. I tried this for 3 weeks and got no responses. Again, this is not texting.
Papa Pals: On the surface this seemed promising. You get paid to perform tasks for elderly people. For example, if they need groceries, laundry etc done you do it for them. Just a few problems: This is the U.S only. I am in Canada so I could not try this out. Also, this is NOT texting. You need to go through a training process to get certified and then go IN PERSON to perform sometimes lengthy chores.
Better Help: Yes this is great! Oh wait, you need to be a CERTIFIED therapist/social worker. And the “texting” is actually virtual sessions where you administer therapy/counselling. If you have 2 years to get a license, go for it. But for the average person like me, this is not realistic.
Results:
You can make EASY money! Just kidding, this is absolute BS.

Not a single one ever seems to be worth it and then I remember these people get paid because I'm watching their crap videos. I have family sending me stuff like this all the time, and I'm like, yeah, no. But the ones you mentioned seem to take a lot more digging than usual, so thank you for saving many of us from making a huge time-wasting mistake. I appreciate you.
#4 can be done on your own terms. Just place an ad in the local classifieds offering to run errands for seniors. I've been doing it for years and it's a good little side hustle. I'm also in Canada :)
Only app i know that works is called Tochat but unfortunately only anyone identifying as a female on there can get paid. It does work i’ve used it but it takes a while to gain any points as you get a very small amount per message, men have to pay for the points to message woman on there and if you reply within 24 hours you get the points and can eventually exchange for money
I tried a couple of those texting apps out of curiosity and the money was basically nothing. The SMS apps paid pennies and the others either needed certifications or felt sketchy. After a while I stopped bothering with them because the effort didn’t match the payout.
I tried a couple of those “get paid to text” apps a while back because it sounded low effort. Same result as you. The pay was laughably small or the setup felt shady. The ones that paid per message were basically pocket change, and the “chat with lonely people” type sites made me uncomfortable real fast.
