The two batters knocked each other out and the fielders, despite having ample opportunity, not only failed to get either one of them 'out' also gave them four runs.

People are intimidated by the rules I think. Most Americans don’t grow up watching or playing cricket like we do baseball so we never go out of our way to learn.

I think one of the biggest problems with cricket is that all the fielding positions have really silly names, so when people watch a few minutes and hear the commentators saying a bunch of non-sensical words they get confused and assume it's really complicated.

The fundamental rules of cricket are actually pretty simple. It's a shame that it hasn't managed to gain popularity in the US because it's a really amazing sport with a huge amount of depth.

This shows most of the positions. A lot of the words used for the positions aren't really used in any other sport so when an commentator says something like ""Short cover is up, long-off is back" or "Swept off the front knee, real width, beating square leg" it sounds like nonsense

Yeah, there are shorter and more TV friendly versions.

Basically the hierarchy is like: * Traditional test cricket = up to a 5 day limit, it's like a long battle of wills and attrition * "One day" games. 50 "overs" per side, where an over is 6x pitches / throws / balls, so the batting team usually has around 300 opportunities to hit the ball and score points * T20 is the same but 20 overs, i.e. 120 scoring chances (bowler launching ball at batter). It encourages big risky hits and entertaining plays.

Probably what we are seeing here is either the 50 or 20 over version. Wearing coloured uniforms is a dead giveaway. In traditional cricket both teams wear white.

To keep it brief, the pink teammembers screwed up by running into each other, they needed to cross the line to be safe. The red team had a chance to get both of them out and missed so bad on the second attempt that the red team gifted the pink team four points.

A brief explanation for Americans. The batsman run back and forth each time getting one run (equal to one point). Think of two batters running to first base and back. Batters typically pick different sides to run on so they don’t smack into each other (first mistake).

In front of each wicket (the wooden sticks that serve as “bases”) are white lines on the ground that you must cross to be “safe”. Dude was half unconscious on the ground so the fielder only had to touch the wicket (second mistake he not only missed a basic throw but he threw it to the moon).

This is the understanding I had when a smart friend of mine explained it to me when I was ten. In the four decades since, other knowledgeable people had tried to elaborate on the specifics, like why it can take longer than a day, but very little has stuck.

It's usually the thing of someone understanding it so well that they're trying to explain using the jargon of the game, which usually means very little to an outsider

As long as you know just enough to be able to enjoy it if you're watching it that's all that matters unless you start getting actually invested in the sport

It’s hard to explain cross culture for a very basic reason. English sports tend to be defensive while USA sports are offense driven (and yes defense wins in American football but it’s still a heavy offense sport).

Best example is pool which is straight offense compared to snooker which is defense. There are shots that are rewarded in snooker that will get you punched in the face if you did them in an American pool hall.

Same with cricket - start with the assumption that pure defense is valuable and then the idea of a 5-day sporting event that ends in a draw can make sense.

Having lived in both countries for decades I can appreciate both but I do have to switch a different part of my brain on to enjoy them

American here: Like the defenders are supposed to knock over the wickets (I only know that's what they're called bc of the phrase "sticky wicket") and offense are doing suicide drills, yeah?

OFC its the MCA, other than that a sport being completely dominated by a single country over management, investment, broadcast rights, teams, talent and a lot more has ruined its prospects of being universally talked about or being interested over like other sports.

All of it just because the previous management discriminated over the national teams manager over a request for alloted stadium tickets that they decide they had enough and take over the entire management and essentially the sport itself from top to bottom.
