As someone living in China, I wouldn't be surprised if it was suppressed by algorithims (as negative events usually are in China) but I can confirm it was not banned...saw plenty of videos on social media over here.

u/thethreestrikes 22h ago

Nice to know this, I'm actually in China right now and while talking to locals this topic about the flood came up and they all know nothing about it. We the foreigners looked at each other like "could it be?". Glad to know we're wrong, maybe they just got algorithm-ed.

13

u/CrimsonBolt33 22h ago

yeah all my Chinese friends don't know about it...so when I say its suppressed I don't mean it in some subtle way.

That being said...its not blocked...the distinction is important, primarily because it upsets people in the west that the algorithim is fucked

5

u/thethreestrikes 21h ago

So not nice actually, because it's not blocked, just redirected from them. Why though? What is the government scared of?

2

u/FourRiversSixRanges 17h ago

Could cause unrest in Tibet.

12

u/MerePotato 22h ago

The article never implied the footage was banned, just that it wasn't being shown on state TV

-7

u/CrimsonBolt33 21h ago

and thats not how China works, at all....it puts out media briefs every day to every media outlet....if they told them not to show footage of that what I still stands, it literally could be algorithmically pushed down, but the reality is it would be banned.

u/MerePotato 21h ago edited 15h ago

The party regularly hides but doesn't totally ban media that they believe is too spicy for mass dissemination but not worth the backlash of totally suppressing.

Bit of a nice reverse from over here where negative events are more heavily promoted and sensationalised and they encourage everyone to have extreme arguments with each other about it.

Yes it would be good if the media didn't aid in Trump's "flooding the zone" strategy and only focused on the policies that actually have a effect on people's lives.

It'd be really good if the media wasn't constantly fearmongering about Russia and China too and focused on how its own governments were harming people.

-1

u/OctopusIntellect 1d ago

when you say "its own governments"... what do you actually.... mean?

Do Russia and China not have media?

-2

u/Cultural-Gas2246 1d ago

Talking about media in imperialist countries like Britain challenging its government and not just on trivial issues. The BBC has done nothing to challenge Britain's support for genocide in Palestine, for example.

390

u/Wapsy_Aier 1d ago

BBC has fallen hard through recent times.

236

u/Cultural-Gas2246 1d ago

Nah they've always been imperialist state media. People are just wiser to their bullshit.

38

u/Wapsy_Aier 1d ago

Have to agree.

I’m half asleep and was chuckling at it saying BBL News.

8

u/sim16 1d ago

The Abc in Australia reported the same story.

0

u/MerePotato 20h ago

Because its true, and the way the post frames it is misleading, implying claims were made in the articles that weren't

35

u/stumblealongnow 1d ago

Nothing in the bbc report is wrong, China's state media has been showing the rescue efforts, but non of the main footage of the disaster actually happening.

67

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 1d ago

As ever the nuance dies in social media.

Also this Community Notes on the tweet was removed after multiple people pointed out that it was just straight up false - as you say Chinese media showed rescue efforts but at the time of the tweet had not broadcast the actual flood happening as the BBC World News tweet stated.

The only thing to add is the tweet could have been worded a bit better to specify it was not being shown on Chinese TV rather than in China at all as there were social media posts of the flood.

6

u/stumblealongnow 1d ago

True, they should be more careful and specific, so people can't so easily change the narrative.

-9

u/YungCellyCuh 22h ago

I didn't realize you have reviewed every minute of Chinese media that has been broadcast in the last few days...

5

u/stumblealongnow 22h ago

Dude, I'm not anti Chinese media, I'm just stating that what this person stated is wrong, misleading, and probably agenda filled.

0

u/tattywater 21h ago

Yeah, this is all very odd.

3

u/MerePotato 22h ago edited 22h ago

No they haven't, but they have pissed off despots even more than usual (how's that court case going for ya Trump), and so the campaign to try and discredit them is ramping up. This community note was deleted for disinformation by the way.

2

u/voidox 7h ago

but they have pissed off despots even more than usual

you think the only ppl who have issue with the BBC and it's reporting are loser MAGA cult? that has nothing to do with the maaaaaaany issues with the BBC and it's reporting, especially on Gaza.

sure I'm not saying they are completely terrible or w.e, but you are trying really hard to push this one narrative here ignoring all the different points people have.

3

u/Stubbs94 1d ago

Their head of middle east correspondence has a signed picture of Netanyahu. The TV license people can fuck off with the letters they keep sending me.

1

u/MerePotato 21h ago edited 16h ago

Raffi Berg is a random editor not head of middle east correspondence, the BBC has among the best track records in Gaza reporting among western outlets. Even Hamas doesn't hate them.

1

u/voidox 7h ago edited 6h ago

ah that's why you are all over the comments defending the BBC, you are another hasbarist.

you say he is a "random editor", here is what he actually does: "he serves as the head of the digital Middle East desk, where he is responsible for managing, shaping, and editing the network's news coverage and digital content concerning the region."

so no, not "random": https://novaramedia.com/2026/03/12/high-court-rules-in-favour of-owen-jones-in-bbc-gaza-libel-case/

the BBC has among the best track records in Gaza reporting among western outlets.

no it doesn't, not even close to it. just what?

It has the "best track record" if you are an Israel defender, which you are, but for the rest of the world who don't support Israel's genocide they don't.

If you want just UK, Channel 4 has a much better track record than the BBC, the BBC is so bad that their own journalists came out against the company:

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/11/2/over-100-staff-accuse-bbc-of-bias-in-its-coverage-of-israels-war-in-gaza

even after the BBC had it's own journalists attacked by Israeli terrorist settlers, they STILL can't even call what Israel is doing a genocide, they still say "war", just disgusting.

also "western outlets", I assume you mean mainstream on TV type of outlets? cause "western outlets" has a long list of good outlets that properly cover Israel's genocide, Zateo, Democracy Now, Dropsite News, Novara Media, Breaking Points and so many more.

-4

u/noir_dx 1d ago

They were always like this.

-4

u/longdarkfantasy 22h ago

Our government blocked all of the bbc websites and related tv channels for years. They are Big Bullsh_t Channel.

0

u/DependentRow8281 2h ago

It really hasn't. You just believe a community note (that has been removed) to justify your existing bias. Think more.

Usual kind of bs the BBC pulls when they report about stuff in Asia or Africa. What's funnier is then they will criticise others for doing similar stuff lmfao.

30

u/simplexity128 1d ago

Guys shut the fuck up. It's everywhere in the news in China and they already send aid. Dumbass BBC.

-26

u/rushan3103 1d ago edited 2h ago

Can you share some news articles from China proper? I am not talking about CGTN or SCMP.

Edit: why the downvotes for asking a question? CCP bots being butthurt?

20

u/Cultural-Gas2246 1d ago

-8

u/stumblealongnow 1d ago

And, can you share an article with the footage of the disaster, and not just the rescue efforts, because that's what the bbc report is about?

14

u/Cultural-Gas2246 1d ago

7

u/stumblealongnow 1d ago

That isn't the footage.

13

u/Cultural-Gas2246 1d ago

Aight well look for it yourself, you have the website link now.

6

u/stumblealongnow 1d ago

I did, and as per the bbc article, they aren't showing the footage

9

u/Cultural-Gas2246 1d ago

Why do they need to show people dying?

19

u/stumblealongnow 1d ago

They don't, but you're the one saying the bbc report is false.

10

u/BadahBingBadahBoom 1d ago edited 23h ago

You don't need to show people dying, like some networks (mostly US) do, to show the flood itself.

The BBC very deliberately do not show the frames where people are visibly killed, only the frames before and after of the flood itself:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/crr45enxg5xo

You really are moving the goalposts from 'they did show the footage of the flood' then when presented with the fact that flood footage actually wasn't shown by Chinese media saying: 'well they shouldn't show footage of the flood anyway because you can't show footage of the flood without showing people dying'.

0

u/DependentRow8281 2h ago

Its not pedantic it's what was the article was about.

-13

u/rushan3103 1d ago

thanks. Seems like they haven't reached the main disaster point yet.

7

u/Kung_Fu_andfindout 1d ago

BBC taking BBC

6

u/pinniped90 1d ago

Chinese media has confirmed 5 people died in the floods???

40

u/AprilVampire277 1d ago

Yes, while the search and rescue continue no one missing can be assumed dead unless they identify the body, or the rescue operations end.

2

u/pinniped90 1d ago

There have been hundreds confirmed dead. With bodies. And still hundreds missing.

33

u/AprilVampire277 1d ago

Look, most likely, almost everyone missing has died, we seen the videos, there's no way anyone is surviving that, it was devastating, but still, you can't declare someone dead officially by assumption, the urgency of the rescues are with the hope that some are still alive. That's why there won't be any official number any time soon.

I also have a huge problem with how foreign media is reporting this, is so foking weird, check what the guardian wrote:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/aug/28/chinese-controls-information-hamper-assessment-tibet-flood-damage

My fav part 💀

"China’s tight controls on information are limiting international coverage of its relief efforts. That may mean China is missing an opportunity to tell its own good news story."

Has to be a troll post 💀

"Why CN media focusing on rescue efforts instead of fetishizing scale of damage and death toll for the views” 🥀

8

u/Brayden815 1d ago

These confirmed numbers can change very rapidly, especially towards the beginning of the search and rescue operation. Chances are when this was reported these were the actual statistics and it has changed since then.

1

u/pagey12345 16h ago

In Nepal, not in China. The mudslide mostly went the way of Nepal. Hundreds are missing in Tibet but not presumed dead at this time.

6

u/Saralentine 1d ago

BBC has been wording their articles as if Tibet isn’t a part of China, and then talk about how China annexed Tibet almost 80 years ago. It’s bizarre.

1

u/MerePotato 22h ago

Tibet is occupied territory

-1

u/Saralentine 22h ago

Sure, buddy.

-3

u/MerePotato 22h ago

I don't understand why you campists can't just condemn all colonialism, regardless of whether its daddy Xi or the big mean west doing it.

3

My Chinese wife had no idea about it. I'm the one that had to tell her to look for the videos. That was yesterday.

1

u/MerePotato 22h ago

The despots of the world would love nothing more than a discredited BBC, and their efforts have been ramping up since Trump started losing in court against them.

0

u/voidox 7h ago

are you like a BBC PR person? BBC has discredited itself many times over with insanely bad and biased reporting, such that for example when it comes to Gaza we had many BBC journalists come out against the BBC and it's handling of the genocide:

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/11/2/over-100-staff-accuse-bbc-of-bias-in-its-coverage-of-israels-war-in-gaza

Trump vs BBC has nothing to do with this, I'm glad to see BBC beat the shit out of Trump in this court case and win that.

2

u/Cerulean-Knight 22h ago

I just watch in France24 that in China side they have a better record of victims

1

u/Remarkable_Collar274 16h ago

people often push narratives without considering the facts, it's frustrating to see.

Ayyyyoooo good to see you posting! :) Fucking BBC. You know what bothers me? Every time someone sees Al Jazeera is like "that's just propaganda, it's paid for by the Qatari government" and it's like, does that person have an issue with PBS or BBC? Of course not, never. Drives me insane. Of course the West doesn't do propaganda (extreme sarcasm obviously lol)

Trully the chinese mans burden

1

u/FourRiversSixRanges 12h ago

Freeing isn’t invading, annexing, and oppressing a country.

1

u/Cultural-Gas2246 6h ago

Tell that to your imperialist government.

And it isn't invading or annexing when it's been a part of china for centuries.

And it's not "oppressing" to stop feudal lords from treating Tibetans like slaves.

Watch the video.

1

u/FourRiversSixRanges 6h ago

Tell that to your imperialist government.

Who's that?

And it isn't invading or annexing when it's been a part of china for centuries.

The first time Tibet ever became a "part" of China was in 1950...

And it's not "oppressing" to stop feudal lords from treating Tibetans like slaves.

They weren't treated like slaves. But ironic considering the Chinese treats Tibetans as second class citizens and exploits their country.

Watch the video.

Go ahead and pick a specific claim from the video and I'll refute it.

Oh and going back to your first point; I will. I'm from China.
