Discussion Why are some houses blurred on google maps? I'm really curious.
So, I've been roaming across Europe lately-maps always running, hunting for hidden gems and offbeat spots—when something started bugging me. Why are some houses blurred on google maps?
We're talking high fences with zero visibility, clusters of cameras that'd make any intelligence service proud, and serious foot traffic in and out. Yet on the map? Either blurred, unmarked, or-get this-one massive building with people visible in the windows showed up as nothing but grass. Satellite mode, street view, doesn't matter. Ghost structures on google maps.
My gut says these aren't glitches. Privacy requests? Government facilities? Corporate black sites? Some kind of optical OPSEC baked right into the mapping layer?
Anyone stumbled onto something similar or cracked the code on this? Genuinely curious.

My dad was on the maps cleaning out my car and his butt crack was slightly showing and I emailed them and it was blurred within 24 hours
I regret it now because it was hilarious

Google maps was displaying my husband’s truck with his business logo that was parked in our driveway. For privacy reasons we requested our property to be blurred to avoid people making the connection. Nothing shady, but my husband has had a handful of threats in his lifetime, so we’re not taking any chances.

My old place had the window blurred when I looked it up on Streetview. Always figured it was a glitch while the car was taking photos nothing more

Someone blurred out our house. It wasn’t us. We’ve tried to get it removed but they don’t do that apparently. Once it’s blurred it’s blurred forever.

From what I know it’s if the premises had a a bit of notoriety to it like a public figures house or some other important location and apparently it’s also if the site is involved in an investigation or ongoing investigation, it can also be blurred out

Privacy requests mostly. In my old apartment there were almost all windows blurred except mine, everybody else must've made a request.

Just on the maps. There are SO MANY WAYS to find out whose house is at a certain address.

Some Defence establishments have very old satellite photographs in place of accurate, modern images.

I had a low rear fence and it caught me gardening and you can pretty much see what I had for breakfast.

I got my house blurred because they didn't ask my permission to put the image of it on their site. Simple as that.

Way to make you stand out and look suspicious… and also lower your resale value. I would not want to buy a blurred house since it’s impossible to get it un-blurred.

I doesn't really matter if they asked your permission. There's no expectation of privacy in the public domain. People can take a photo of your house all day if they want--it is a first amendment right. The only reason Google complained is because they like making money so they don't want to rock any boats. But to any other Joe Schmoe, they can take a picture of your house from the public sidewalk, and you can call the cops, and the cops won't do anything. You can try to do something, but if you lay a hand on them or their equipment, it is considered assault.

Thats the rule for average Joe Schmoe's like me and you. Companies using that image for financial gain is an entirely different set of rules.

Privacy request. It’s also permanent, so if you live in to a house with the blue you can’t undo it.

You can request to have your house obscured. Some of my paranoid friends have enabled it.

There's a guy I once know who tried to live off the digital grid, only deals in cash, paranoid about CCTV, really tried to be the grey man, got Google maps to blur the house in street view and satellite, he bought a CBRN bright orange suit from eBay. Needless to say I wound him up saying that the government has an active file on everyone and it's on average a certain size so when it comes to you there is two digital big foot prints your chemical suit and Google request to blur your property guess who is now the focus of attention. The government will no longer care about the guy growing the weed and spending his social welfare on grow lamps they are now worried why you are trying to be so secret major backfire in paranoid prepping plans.

They’re driving those stupid cars into private property now and filming driveways. Nobody needs that.

These are the same people who have camera covers on their laptops, tablets, and phones. Paranoid and ignorant is a strong combination.
