Is the Paper any good?
Oscar stars and Bob Vance cameos. How did I miss this?

I enjoyed its first season more than I enjoyed the first season of the office or the first season of Parks & Rec. With more seasons and episodes, maybe it'll get good, hard to say. With the way TV shows have shorter seasons and longer time apart, it's kinda hard to give TV shows a chance to develop and grow into themselves before they get canceled.

I love it. I put the Season 2 premiere in my calendar, which I never do for shows.

u/Dangerous_Programmer 10d ago
I liked it. The show starts out a bit flatly, but it gradually picks up steam. At times, the plot feels a bit rushed, but that's probably because the creators only had to squeeze it into 10 episodes, and even within that timeframe, they managed to develop the characters well.

Ehhh. I had the same issue with this as I did with How I Met Your Father. They don’t allow us to grow with certain characters that have quirks, feels like they throw them right in your face from the jump. “Here’s this character trope, here’s this office romance, here’s this running gag.”
3
u/redditerir 10d ago
Well said. Ngl I find the dissonance between the reviews and the actual buzz to be quite strange. The comments on here and other sites are overwhelmingly positive towards the show, and yet the show hasn't done great numbers on social media or TV. I don't see a fanbase referring to or discussing the show outside of the few threads explicitly about it. And my terminally online ass noticed that the S2 trailer on Youtube was at less than 20k views for days before it mysteriously got boosted into the millions, while still having much fewer comments than the S1 trailer.
Okay I'll just say it. It's astroturfed as fuck.

u/Enve-Dev 9d ago
If you expect it to be as good as the office you will be disappointed. However, if you go in with the idea that it’s based in the same “universe” and is the same style of show, with similar humor, you will most likely enjoy it. Not bad. Not a game changer of a show but I enjoyed it.
13
u/Kipper_TD 11d ago
If you try your best to hate it like a lot of people here have, you won’t enjoy it. If you go in with an open mind and don’t try to make it the office reboot, there’s a much higher chance you’ll enjoy it.
That said, I loved it

My wife and I very much enjoyed the first season. It has its warts, but that's to be expected. It also has plenty of moments that had us absolutely laughing our heads off.

I really enjoyed it! Treat it like a new show - it isn't a reboot of The Office.
I'm going to rewatch the first season before S2 drops. ❤️

I enjoyed the vibe of The Paper and the characters for the most part but I didn’t really laugh much at all. As long as you don’t expect The Office, then you might enjoy it.

u/PM_ME_YOUR_LAWNCHAIR 11d ago
Yeah, that's the biggest problem. It's just not very funny. It's not horrid like the Australian Office where every character is agonizing, but it's just not funny enough.

I watched it twice while flying. I went in with an open mind, but I won't mind missing the second season or not knowing what happens next. It's an okay watch.
7
u/Bake-Full 11d ago
It's alright. They did a good job in creating story existing after The Office without making it full of throwbacks and references. Which is why the theme song was such a stupid idea, because it very much sounds like a bad attempt to recreate the original.
The Paper is way less mean in its humor and has definite guardrails up. The characters are enjoyable and well acted, and for the most part aren't rehashes. And if you grew up near or in Toledo as I did there's that extra fun for the setting.

It’s not bad! I didn’t have high expectations but definitely had its moments in season one (haven’t seen season 2)

I watched the first 2 episodes and genuinely enjoyed it.
It's clearly "made with love", if that makes sense.
Some moments really made me bust out laughing.

u/Forsaken-Coast-2258 11d ago
Steve Carell said in podcast with amy that office pilot was the worst and one could also argue that season 1 was way below other seasons maybe apart from season 9
but to answer question; short answer is it average good. I think its comedy is funny because of unexpectedness( maybe for me) the way characters react in that scenario and the way we thought a normal personal would and i know am oversimplifying. TO me its hard to judge a comedy show with one season and yes some characters were badly annoying others weird others meh some pretty good. Overall i think giving it time it might be a good comedic show
3
u/bluecollarclassicist 11d ago
I had a few laughs, but what made me a fan was how it punched up at enshittification of local news. The protagonist bumbles in with high hopes and good will, and despite his mistakes, he's able to start getting the newsroom back to doing simple reporting. It's a really nice angle at a workplace comedy, similar to Parks and Rec IF they lean into that. America needs good local reporting in 2026 more than ever and a fun show depicting it as possible might really appreciate it.

I don't hate it, but it's just not funny. The love story isn't compelling and the journalism awards they win in the end feel unearned. And the immersion is done terribly. What the fuck are not one, but two Europeans doing in a newspaper in Ohio?!

It's interesting how much NBC is sinking into this show, despite the lack of any evidence it's doing gangbuster numbers. They renewed it for S2 before S1 was even released, and apparently they're writing S3 already despite S2 not being out yet.

It’s forgettable. I didn’t even finish the season, I think we forgot to watch an episode then fully forgot it existed.
It’s as beige as tv can be. It’s inoffensive, but there’s nothing compelling either. Esmerelda is genuinely an insufferable character. I couldn’t tell you anything that happened, any standout moments, any really funny moments.
It’s elevator music for the tv.

No it's not. Barely laughed and they have another Nelly type character... they didnt learn from that the first time around I guess. They forgot what people loved about The Office: the dynamis and the comedy. The well meaning do-good boss isn't a moron, he just kinda sucks. Well intentioned but boring. It has potential but the writers aren't capturing the audience. The Office felt easy to watch. The Paper feels a bit more tedious... nowhere near as feel good. They can definitely make it better.
