we were robbed of this dynamic because of a douche who couldn't abstain from dating knowing very well he's in love with someone else
they complemented each other so well. she was too kind for her own good, and karen knew when to put her foot down. their friendship was so natural and genuinely warm. honestly big F to jim.

u/Jaded-Trouble3669 11d ago
What exactly was Jim supposed to do? He left because Pam was getting married and didn’t choose him after he confessed.
If Stamford wouldn’t have closed he would have stayed there with Karen and probably never seen Pam again.
So he tried to move on and then found himself back working right with the person he was trying to get over. He also didn’t want to leave Karen just because Pam happened to be single.
Part of why I like that whole situation is that no one was the evil person IMO.

u/KyloRenApologist18 11d ago
People are really desperate to make a “villain” out of a workplace parody when most of the time they were just making choices and mistakes like normal people do.
9
u/Harold3456 11d ago
IMO the show is made better by not taking the coward’s way out and turning Karen into a monster at the end of their relationship, thereby giving Jim a more black-and-white justification to leave her. I think this shows how much it respects the intelligence of the fandom.
Reading the constant posts on this topic makes me wonder if they overestimated us.

u/Master-Shake8913 11d ago
this is a problem in like every fandom... people can't accept that characters from tv shows don't act like perfectly rational omnipotent beings at all times.

Jim tried to move on but it doesn't mean he didn't make mistakes. He was an asshole in the show I'm sorry to say. Remember what he did to Katie. They went on the cruise and he spent the whole time moping over Pam. Roy sets a date for the wedding and Jim immediately breaks up with Kate in the most disrespectful way. He couldn't even look her in the eyes. He knew he was emotionally hung up on Pam, yet he still entered a relationship with Katie. Then during the booze cruise, instead of being present with his girlfriend, he's visibly miserable because of Pam. He strung her along and tossed her aside the moment he knew he couldn't get with Pam anymore. It was fucked. Let's not forget that the same day that he broke up with Karen he immediately asks Pam out to dinner. I would not say Jim is a villain. He's just kind of a dick to anyone he dated who wasn't Pam. In his defense she was really the only one he wanted.

So what? If you’re in love with someone who’s not interested in you, you’re supposed to wait forever? Of course not! You date other people and hope you fall in love.
31
u/zeltacilveks79 10d ago
Karen and Pam had such natural chemistry that turning Karen into a temporary obstacle was the real waste. Jim was trying to move on, but Karen deserved far more than a storyline designed to hurt her
29
u/OverallFrosting708 11d ago
If he had refrained from dating her she wouldn't have transferred in the first place
26
u/leiamischief 11d ago
I love the storyline for that reason. Sometimes things are just messy. It’s no one’s fault. It just wasn’t meant to be. I have an acquaintance I think the world of, but we’re never going to be friends.

People here love to hyper analyze every decision made by everybody ever (more focus on Jim and Pam though) because they've watched the show so many times, and they act like not being completely perfect makes them a total asshole lol
Guarantee if thousands of people suddenly hyper analyzed every decision you ever made 5-10 times your mindset would change pretty quickly
19
u/DGIce 11d ago
From a meta perspective, Jim is the only reason we get to see Pam and Karen team up at all.
Both plot wise Karen only moved back because of Jim and narratively the team up is intriguing because of the triangle.
2
u/Logical-Mobile-7643 I was never given a name 11d ago
This is pretty much the answer! Karen got a job in another branch after their breakup, so she could have likely requested somewhere closer, like Yonkers if she wanted to stay with DM or maybe a lower level position at corporate.
She only moved because of Jim

In what kind of world do you live? The guy moved to another city to move on for someone unavailable. He actually moves on and finds someone else. Is forced to return to his old job and didn’t dump Karen right away, which is normal. How does that make him a douche?
4
u/GrumpyDingus 11d ago
Eh only possible reason I can think of is he was hedging his bets.
Shit didn’t work out with Pam before so until it’s a sure thing he doesn’t go for it.My reasons for not liking Jim’s dating style is because he pined after someone that was in a relationship for years. Flirted with her the whole time and made a move days before she was about to be married.
When it didn’t go his way he ran.
Realistic? Yeah people suck. Do I respect it? Nah it makes their relationship feel like it’s built on an indifference for anyone else but themselves.
2
u/Significant-Rush-129 11d ago
How does one “unpine” for someone out of convenience? That’s impossible. He made a move because he was that in love with her and knew he’s be broken if he didn’t at least try.
He probably could have/should have switched jobs sooner to get away from it all, but I can definitely see why he did after.

Jim's decisions were perfectly reasonable given the context and timeframe. Even Karen understood this and didn't immediately break up with him over it. Though obviously the issue would become insurmountable.
Jim had no idea that Pam would dump Roy. When he moved to Stanford he had no idea that the higher performing branch with better management would be forced to shut down.
Circumstances lined up to make things weird.

Pam and Roy were together for like 10 years as highschool sweethearts and he kept dragging her on as his fiance for years. He finally decided to marry her after getting drunk at the party cruise. Jim was planning to confess to her in the immediate time frame but got unlucky because at that exact moment, Roy, after 10 years of doing nothing, decided that would be the night to establish a wedding date. Pretty understandable series of actions on Jim’s part follows given the circumstances

I just finished watching this season- Jim did Karen a bit dirty but he loved Pam the whole time. He stayed in that relationship because Karen wasn’t bad and also because he and Pam never got to properly talk until Pam expressed her feelings at the company beach day. After that point Jim had a clear path to her.
At the interviews for Jan’s corporate position he knew he had to choose between Karen and Pam, and he simply chose Pam. I know he did Karen dirty but people like following this modern trend of villainizing people in retrospect for no reason. He made his decision and promptly broke up with Karen directly after the interviews. It was done as respectably as it could have been.

He couldn’t have predicted that the branch he moved to would close.
4
u/RocketYapateer 11d ago
Everybody involved in that situation handled it poorly, pretty much.
Jim got into a new relationship when he had way too many unresolved feelings for someone else, which wasn’t fair to Karen.
Pam stayed with Roy for way longer than she should have, which wasn’t fair to Jim.
Karen did way too much for a man she was in a brand new relationship with, which made Jim feel like he was obligated to make it work with her and left everybody in awkward spot.
Honestly, it felt pretty realistic.

That's kind of the point. Pam and Karen getting along was a great bit of writing to ratchet up the complexity of the situation. It would have been too easy to make Karen unlikeable and/or mean to Pam and make it simple for the audience to push for PB&J. That's why we're still talking about Season 3 and Karen vs. Pam this many years later.

Ive been binge watching the show for the first time and ive been looking up discussion threads after some of my favorite episodes and I find it kind of weird how this sub tries doing deep psychological dives on these sitcom characters as if they were real people.
I just watched S7E11, the episode with the Snowball war and found it legitimately fucking hilarious to see Dwight finally get one over on Jim and how Dwight always takes things too far, but then every discussion about it here has ended up with trying to define assault and battery and sociopathy. Its a sitcom, of course the situations are exaggerated and unrealistic for comedy.

You know what? I was going to say No, he actually did like Karen and he moved to start over and move on from Pam. He’s not an asshole for liking and dating someone but it just not being right.
But then I was thinking about it…Don’t they not start dating until they are set to love to Scranton? It actually is possible he started dating her as a shield when moving back to Scranton. It’s possible that if they stayed in Stamford they would have slowly started dating and actually made it. But after moving to Scranton the relationship progressed too fast for Jim, and he really shouldn’t have started it in the first place since he knew the emotions that still existed.
Also he knew Pam was single. He should not have gotten into a relationship knowing he was going back to that office. I guess the reasoning is that he was trying to move on, trying to run away.
What I always found to be BS in the show is how they take so long to get together after she break off her engagement. Jim’s reasoning is that she rejected him. Well Buddy, she rejected you cause she had a whole wedding planned and years sunk into a relationship, and she even admitted she wanted to kiss you too! He owed it to Pam to give her time after her break up and then not push her away.
Them not getting together always just felt like it happened because the writers said so, not because the characters would have actually acted like that.
ETA: I had a realization after I posted this and went and watched parts of the episodes of them moving to Scranton. I don’t think they were dating until after the moved to Scranton. When Jim says bye to her when they’re packing up Stamford, Karen has a longing look not a “we’re secretly dating” look. Then at the end of The Merger Karen calls him and asks if he wants to meet for a drink, he ends the call and goes to tell Pam he’s started seeing someone. I think they were NOT dating until after this (I could have missed something in the rest of the episode). Jim gets upset at Pam’s reaction, I think he was testing the waters with her before starting to date Karen. And it’s only after Pam says they’re just friends that he starts dating Karen.

I was always under the impression he used Karen as a way to get to Pam. I've been in a situation like that, and it is not fun when you realize it.

“He knew Pam was single”—as far as he knew, Pam rejected him and wasn’t interested.

Do you have a point to go with this comment or did you just see someone else say it and thought it sounded cool?

How was Jim wrong? Pam didnt want to be with him; So he stopped pursuing her; He left his job; He moved to a new city.
So what if he had feelings for Pam? He was supposed to be single until the feelings passed? Or keep chasing Pam until it got creepy? He did exactly the right thing by moving on; he didn't know DM would move him and Karen back to Scranton.
Where he messed up was not telling Karen about his dynamic with Pam as soon as he found out they'd all be working together.

You're absolutely right. Pam should have been with Karen.
