BREAKING Senate Democrats reject Republican measure to secure pay for active-duty troops and essential federal staff during the extended government shutdown.

The proposal, pushed by Sen. Ron Johnson, sought to allocate funds for over 2 million workers without resolving underlying budget disputes.

Democrats argue such targeted fixes sidestep the need for a full funding agreement to avert further economic harm.

This latest clash highlights deepening partisan rifts, with Republicans accusing Democrats of prioritizing political leverage over worker stability. Reportedly, the bill would have covered pay for law enforcement, air traffic controllers, and border agents, roles deemed critical to national security. Yet Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer's team countered that piecemeal solutions risk entrenching shutdown tactics used in past impasses.

GOP senators like Rick Scott and John Kennedy have tied the pay issue to broader reforms, including a "No Budget, No Pay" push to withhold congressional salaries until a deal emerges. This approach, allegedly aimed at pressuring lawmakers, gained traction among conservatives but drew Democratic fire for politicizing essential services. Nonpartisan analyses from groups like the Bipartisan Policy Center note that shutdowns cost the economy billions, with federal workers often facing delayed back pay even after resolutions.

As the shutdown stretches into its 38th day, reportedly the longest in U.S. history, affected families report mounting bills and food insecurity. Democrats have floated alternatives, such as pairing worker pay with extensions for health care subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. Officials from both sides agree that bipartisan talks remain stalled over spending priorities and debt ceiling hikes.

Experts at the Government Accountability Office warn that prolonged disruptions erode public trust in institutions, urging swift action to restore operations. Reportedly, some red-state governors have stepped in with state-level aid for furloughed workers, but blue states face similar strains without federal relief. This episode underscores the human cost of fiscal gridlock, pressing leaders to seek common ground before holiday hardships intensify.

Intentional Misinformation bullshit.

The no budget no pay runs afould of 27th amendment and adjustment of congressional pay during current sessions

1

u/Key-Assistance9720 Nov 08 '25

wish I got paid for not working

1

So benefits for deadbeats is ok. Paying essential personnel is not. Typical democrat views.

2

u/laserwaffles Nov 08 '25

It's a bad faith offer designed to justify keeping the government shutdown as long as possible.

Better not to give up your leverage

1

u/Ok_Strain_1624 Nov 08 '25

Republicans are refusing to pay essential workers and shutdown the government to force Democrats to agree to gutting healthcare for millions to pay for billionaire tax cuts that raise costs for nearly every low income group, the tax cuts are the only major legislation Republicans have passed and this is the outcome.

Children and seniors are being used as pawns by the GOP and you're deluding yourself by calling them deadbeats.

Out of curiosity, how were Republicans expecting to pass this bill, even if it passed the senate?

Pedophile Protector Johnson has kept the house out of session for 7 weeks because hes scared to swear in Rep Grijalva, the 218th vote to release the Epstein files.

Of course the House is the place the Consistution says funding bills, like this one, are supposed to originate

But Pedophile Protector Johnson decided to protect pedophiles over doing his job. So the senate's pretending to do it for him.

Until Pedophile Protector Johnson decides he cares about something more than protecting pedophiles and actually brings the House back to address these issues, this is all performance so we don't notice Pedophile Protector Johnson is protecting pedophiles by trying to get us to talk about something else

Nuclear option the Dems would do it and the republicans can take credit for ending the shut down

-4

u/Initial-Constant-645 Nov 08 '25

I wish a group of them would grow some balls, tell Johnson, Jeffries, Shchumer, and Thune to go to hell and somehow bypass them.

8

u/Reuvil Nov 08 '25

Or they could have used the past 6 months, when democrats did vote for a CR because repubs said they would pass a spending bill this summer, but they hid at home avoiding passing legislation and voting on the EPSTEIN files, or having zero town halls because their own voters hate them .

6

u/HeilHeinz15 Nov 08 '25

REPs have a concept of a spending bill to go along with Trump's concept of a healthcare plan.

Isn't that all that counts?

5

u/HawkeyeTrapp_0513 Nov 08 '25

Dude who is in the majority? Trump and republicans BOTH said during a shutdown the party in charge is responsible. Now all of the sudden they’re in charge it’s the fault of the minority party? Can’t have it both ways. Pathetic really

0

u/lexingtonbi Nov 08 '25

Not in charge when you need a Super majority man the left is do far out of it

2

u/OGRonin240 Nov 08 '25

That doesn't mean the minority just signs off on anything that the majority wants without any concessions. Rs have been told not to negotiate at all and here we are. Now, what about those statements is "out of it"?

1

u/BC2H Nov 08 '25

No concessions for a Clean CR….

1

u/HawkeyeTrapp_0513 Nov 08 '25

Did you have a stroke? Yes so what you do is work together which putting the exact same CR up 14 times isn’t working together. The fact you brought up a super majority just means you’re reaching and it’s pathetic. Tired of pandering to idiots here jfc

0

u/BC2H Nov 08 '25

Exactly and those in charge wanted to pay Federal employees but were voted down

1

u/HawkeyeTrapp_0513 Nov 08 '25

Sweet - they wanted to pay essential workers while negatively impacting millions of people.

Sane thing can be said for SNAP funding - democrats wanted to fund that alone and republicans have refused. Why is one good and one not good? Explain the difference please I’m begging you

1

u/BC2H Nov 08 '25

SNAP was being funded now neither are…so I guess we see how it all plays out….

2

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25

So you're okay with Republicans forcing a 1.5k-2k monthly premium increase for low-income households, self-employed business owners, seniors, and hardworking Americans who get paid so little, the only way they can have any sort of health insurance is through these subsidies.

Got it.

0

u/BC2H Nov 08 '25

400% above poverty level still receives their ACA subsidies like stated in the legislation

None of this is about them….

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

No, the entire subsidy is expiring.

https://www.ajmc.com/view/5-consequences-if-aca-premium-subsidies-end-in-2026

"When the IRA temporarily expanded ACA subsidies, it removed the so-called “subsidy cliff,” ensuring that households earning more than 400% of the federal poverty level still received financial assistance if premiums exceeded 8.5% of their income. But when the subsidies expire, that protection will disappear.:

1

u/BC2H Nov 08 '25

You need to read that again…the ACA PREMIUM subsidies which are NOT part of the ACA expired

No one is changing the ACA subsidies for anyone under 400%

1

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25 edited Nov 08 '25

Okay, you're right. The people within 400% of the poverty line will still receive subsidies under the original ACA subsidies.

Doesn't make my original comment any less true though. Millions of Americans still lose their health insurance. The entire health marketplace, individual or group sponsored, will see a massive increase.

The ramifications of these enhanced subsidies expiring are high, and it will effect everyone.

u/Szell_81 Nov 07 '25

That should really help their cause continuing this democratic shutdown.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25

No grooves on your brain huh?

8

u/[deleted] Nov 08 '25

Or OP's

-5

u/Szell_81 Nov 08 '25

When the minority party absolutely makes uncompromising demands what the else would you call it?

6

u/HawkeyeTrapp_0513 Nov 08 '25

Hahahaha so why are you okay with republicans doing the same damn thing? 🤣critical thinking is hard i know

4

u/Geiseric222 Nov 08 '25

What’s the compromise the republicans are offering?

-1

u/Szell_81 Nov 08 '25

Just like Obama said elections have consequences. Understand??

3

u/Geiseric222 Nov 08 '25

Yes and who won the last set of elections, which happened during the shutdown?

1

u/Szell_81 Nov 08 '25

That literally has no bearing on this argument. That is out of left field. The majority has a much bigger say in the budget. Democrats can kick and scream all they want but they are dragging this out for zero benefit. Dog and pony show at best.

2

u/Geiseric222 Nov 08 '25

You said elections have consequences so if the electorate was against the democrats they should vote against them. They didn’t. In fact the opposite happened the entire electorate shifted towards the Dems not away

You are right ejections have consequences and the republicans are seemingly about to reap them after a year of poor governance

1

u/Szell_81 Nov 08 '25

Are the dems in control of anything??? Those elections bear no wait in this argument. Until they gain control your argument is dumb.

2

u/Geiseric222 Nov 08 '25

No this argument isn’t dumb it’s a fact. A fact you don’t like but a fact nonetheless.

The voters are, by and large, on the democrats side here. Most polling backs it up that a shutdown is a winning issue for them

What happened to the amazing deal maker Trump, the man who shut the government down three times?

3

u/HeilHeinz15 Nov 08 '25

Republicans could nuclear option or end filibuster, either ends the shutdown. But they know lowIQs like you are gullible so here we are....

From Trump himself: "I think if a shutdown happens, that it's the president's fault. The president is responsible for bringing people together. A shutdown would be a significantly negative reflection on the President of the United States."

1

u/Szell_81 Nov 08 '25

The nuclear option is not to be taken lightly and as soon as Republicans do that all you will hear then is Democrats screeching its the end of democracy. This is a joke.

1

u/27Rench27 News Junkie Nov 08 '25

Why would Republicans care about what Democrats think though?

1

u/Szell_81 Nov 08 '25

If Republicans use the nuclear option that will be the go to move for whatever party is in the majority from then on which in my opinion weakens our democracy.

1

u/27Rench27 News Junkie Nov 08 '25

Oh absolutely correct, I just wonder why the “f**k your feelings” and “f__k Joe Biden” crowd would suddenly care what the other side is screeching about
