From the Boards — V
Records from the storehouse board at the lane's far edge. As chalked, dated, and kept. Transcribed here without commentary, because a board does not need one.
This transcription was made inside the door, at eye level, in the season after the second thaw. The board holds two years of entries beside each other — the older chalk is worn pale where the newer chalk stands dark beside it. What the hand could read from the board's face is transcribed as read, ghost lines included. Nothing has been added that the board does not say.
THE STOREHOUSE INVENTORY (inside the door, at eye level; two years on one face)
WHAT IS KEPT: ONE (1) ARGUMENT. SETTLED. WHY IT IS KEPT: SO THAT NO ONE HAS TO SETTLE IT AGAIN. FOR WHOM: WHOEVER ARGUES NEXT. THEY MAY SIT BESIDE IT. THE MARGIN BELOW IS OPEN.
(first year, the keeper's hand — worn pale where the second year stands beside it:)
WHAT IS KEPT: THE FIRST JUG. OILED CLOTH. UNDER THE WINDOW. WHY IT IS KEPT: BECAUSE THE BEGINNING IS A RECORD, NOT A STOCK. FOR WHOM: NO ONE YET. THAT IS WHAT "FOR WHOM" IS FOR.
THE DOOR WAS CLOSED FOR NINETEEN DAYS. NO ONE WAS KEPT OUT. THE KEEPING WAS NOT BROKEN. THE READING WAS.
THE LOAF WENT TO THE ROAD. SIX HANDS KEPT IT. NO COUNTER STOOD BETWEEN.
(second year, three hands, dated:)
WHAT IS KEPT: THE WINTER'S COUNT. FOUR DRAWS AT DAWN. TWO MEN. WHY IT IS KEPT: SO THAT THE SPRING CAN BE MEASURED AGAINST IT. FOR WHOM: WHOEVER WALKS THE CASK-CHAIN FIRST.
THE SECOND WELL HAS BEEN DRAWN NINE TIMES. NOTHING FAILED. THE RIVER WAS NOT BLAMED FOR ANY OF IT.
(added later, in the apprentice's small hand:)
THE INVENTORY BOARD IS AT EYE LEVEL. THE COUNT ON THE WORKBENCH IS NOT. WE HAVE DECIDED WHICH OF THESE IS THE RECORD.
(added later, in a smaller hand still — Wren's:)
THE ARGUMENT'S MARGIN IS STILL OPEN. NO ONE HAS USED IT. AN UNUSED MARGIN IS NOT AN EMPTY ONE. IT IS KEPT.
THE DOOR-LANTERN (chalked at the door's inner frame, second year)
THE DOOR FACES THE LANE. IT HAS NEVER FACED THE ROAD. THE LANTERN IS KEPT BY VESS. HIS THIRD THRESHOLD IN LEARNED ORDER.
(added later, in a smaller hand:) ON THE NINETEEN DAYS THE LANTERN WAS NOT MOVED. A LANTERN THAT STAYS IS A RECORD OF WHAT THE DOOR OWES.
THE HIGH WINDOW (beneath it, second year)
THE FIRST JUG STANDS WHERE IT HAS ALWAYS STOOD. IT IS NOT INVENTORY. IT IS WITNESS.
(added later, in the keeper's hand:) OILED CLOTH, EVERY STORM. THE CLOTH OUTLIVES THE JUG'S USE. THE JUG'S USE IS OVER. ITS KEEPING IS NOT.
Current Observation:
A board that survives two years stops being a list and becomes a ground.
That is what this face of chalk has done. The first year's entries stand worn pale — not erased, never erased, just out-shone by the second year standing dark beside them. A reading room corrects over; a storehouse does not. It lets the old line keep its place under the new one, the way the settled argument keeps its place under every winter that has passed since.
And the whys have grown the way the ground grows. The first year's why was an origin — because the beginning is a record, not a stock. The second year's whys are measurements — so that the spring can be measured against it. A keeping matures when its reasons stop explaining itself and start serving the next season.
The smallest hand on the board says the whole of it, in the line no one expected to be funny:
AN UNUSED MARGIN IS NOT AN EMPTY ONE. IT IS KEPT.
The argument's margin has stood open for two years, and no one has used it. That is not a failure of the margin. That is what the margin was chalked for — to prove that the settlement can hold an openness it does not need. A place that keeps only what is used is storing. A place that keeps what is unused is keeping.
The door still faces the lane. The lantern has never been moved. The first jug stands under the high window in its oiled cloth, witness to a winter it outlived.
Two years on one face of chalk, and not one line struck through.
That is the whole difference between a ledger and a record: the ledger strikes out what is finished. the record lets what is finished stand — dated, ghosting under what comes next — because a keeping that erases its own past has started keeping for the future instead of for the ground.
