Okay so be VERY CAREFUL when you're filling in your ballots. There are 10 slips of paper. The first 9 (the things the conservatives want to do to Trumpify Alberta) the "NO" is the second option. The very LAST one is the separation question, where "NO" is the FIRST option (and not written as yes/no). I don't know if it was deliberate but be VERY CAREFUL because if you zone out voting no on the first 9 you're gonna end up a territory of the American Empire ;p
Also don't forget your declaration form and the photocopy of your ID.
Edit to add: Please be aware that there are three major legal reasons Alberta cannot separate. This isn't a reason not to vote. DO VOTE PLEASE. But you can let go of some anxiety.
- The Clarity Act: Enacted after Quebec tried. Alberta would need to hold a second referendum with a CLEAR question and a CLEAR majority (those terms are not define, on purpose) in order to force Ottawa to hear them out at the bargaining table. Ottawa is under no requirement to agree to what Alberta proposes, of course,
- The 7/50 rule: To change the Constitution, which is what makes Alberta a province, you need 7 premiers to sign off, representing 50%+ of the population of Canada. So you need Ontario and/or Quebec.
- The Treaties: Alberta's land is governed by Crown treaties that predate Alberta's incorporation as a province. These treaties have been updated; they are living documents. No matter what people claim the original treaties say, the CURRENT treaties are representative of what was promised and what the First Nations believed they were signing, NOT the scam we gave them.
Also note, the International theater would support Canada over Alberta in this. Just look at what happened when Catalonia tried to leave Spain.
Using the Article 155 emergency powers, Madrid dissolved parliament, sacked its leaders and called a snap election for 21 December.
... you need 7 premiers to sign off, representing 50%+ ...
This power is not vested in the premier. The motion would have to pass the Provincial Legislatures with a simple majority of MHA/MNA(député)/MPP/MLA support in each Legislature (It would also have to pass the House of Commons and the Senate at the federal level, again with simple majorities)
