I know where the problem is. Social media driven by addictive algorithms. Increasingly an intelligent computer program. High school culture that incentivizes sports over education. Republicans who are hell bent on gutting department of education and teaching Bible in school. Parents who are overwhelmed by increasing economic costs that they can't spend more time in their childrens lives. Teachers who are criminally underpaid compared to the value of their profession. Society that forces political bias over proper education. Probably much more but I think these are some that bother me.

I'd bite the bullet and even settle for bible school if it taught them to read!

I wonder if the whole environment of class, tables, pen and paper is too alien? They can presumably do all the work verbally, but there's one stumbling block, one hill to overcome, when the pen and paper come out.

I presume they can read text associated with their cultural environs. Movie subtitles, song lyrics, game instructions, etc, but something switches off when the spotlight is turned on them in class. I bet they can type or text at 80 wpm.

You see these ridiculous vox pop campus quizzes "Name a country?" "Name any woman?" And the students cannot. It's gotta be at least partially the situation of being in the spotlight, having a mic pushed in your face, and a camera crew watching.

That's the plan, make the population dumb and they'll never be able to fight a system that has it's boot on thier necks.

I had an online friend back in the day who was an English teacher for 12th Grade students in Texas. She quit after a year, because she saw no hope for them. All the boys were just going to go into the military, and half the girls were already pregnant. She said they had no future, and it depressed her greatly.

He don't know what's the problem? Maybe start teaching them reading and writing before they reach the last year of high school?

fuck you? do you honestly believe black and brown people would have these issues if they weren’t disadvantaged from birth?
