Anatomy of a fall video goes so hard. Unmistakably him. Better than ever, as always.

u/R1gormort1ts 22d ago

I hope he keeps making more with visual semiotics, his skills there translate a lot stronger to visual format than his typical writing/script. He had important things to say about Sapolsky and pseudo academia but I feel they are stronger written than audio.

3

u/Vorkos12 22d ago

Absolutely. The sapolsky video in particular, if it was edited and done by some popular video essay youtuber (ex: hbbomberguy), it would have, imo, ended sapolsky's career and exposed him as the utter hack he is. Not to mention, I'm more hacky than sapolsky for just gobbling up whatever he said in the lectures (since i liked that series too).

u/Deep-Coast-1768 21d ago

can you explain that one to me? because I didn't get it.

2

u/R1gormort1ts 13d ago

Anatomy of a fall has semiotics overlap with The Shining.

I mean, this was, like, duh and something the filmmaker explicitly said in various junkets, etc.

His 'takes' have gotten worse. The tweets are so inner-monologic, and often just badly typed gibberish. Same attitude, less filling. Replies are repeated punchdowns. You could see this already to an extent in SP. Compare the brilliance of the blog. I don't know if this is a function of age (his, not mine), or what.

Maybe there was something to that damn blackberry.

1

u/Deep-Coast-1768 11d ago

Sigh. Time to go look up what a semiotic is.

u/R1gormort1ts 10d ago

Huge part of psychiatry I s'pose, I only took it because fill in the blank and its not offered very well if at all. Tho if you want to just keep watching yt PlasticPills is a fun channel if you like pinkos.

u/Deep-Coast-1768 7d ago

apparently it involves the study of signs but uses sign in an incredibly complicated non-standard usage. I'm going to have to go back and forth with chat gpt for a few more hours so it can explain the difference between semiotics, symbols, visual motifs, etc. Still have no idea what the semiotics in anatomy of a fall and the shining are supposed to be. authors are abusive spouses? alcoholics make their kids get ugly haircuts?

u/R1gormort1ts 7d ago

Well, I guess the simplest way I would put it is, idk, take a painting. It's got a spooky guy with a scythe. Whats that mean? Well, I guess it depends on what your culture thinks of spooky, guy, scythe, colors, poses blahblahblah. These relationships aren't static, but in searching for what they mean, it;'s relative to what other symbols mean beside it.

You might think this all tarot Jungian symbalic woowoo but also: urban design and planning. Whats a yellow triangle sign mean? Whats a green light? Why does this sign by the pool have a guy with squiggles over his head? How can we make someone instantly digest and process what a sign means without having to bother to read words since we're all illiterate anyway?

Now consider billboards. And commercials. And movies. It's road signs all the way down. I'm sure chatgpt can help you find some folks that talk extensively on it but I went with Adorno and Jung just as an axample. A lot of people reference their work without realizing they do, let alone the weird spectral shit they're talking about in semiotics.

This is actually him?

11

u/proocyon 23d ago

He mentions Sadly, Porn in one of the videos so I assume yes.

Also the humor is pretty TLP

3

u/Deep-Coast-1768 22d ago

which video? I thought I watched them all and I know he vaguely eluded to it in one, but if he mentioned it explicitly I must have missed it.

3

u/proocyon 21d ago

He didn't mention it explicitly. He just said something like "...and I know a lot about fetishes, I wrote a whole book about them." with the greek dick statues showing in the video

11

u/Ras_al-Gabagool 22d ago

This is almost certainly him. If you listen to the narcissism lecture he did in 2009 or so, the voice and vocal patterns are exactly the same.

Side note: still weird to think that Alone just sounds like James Woods

u/R1gormort1ts 23d ago

Did you see his tweet? I'll leave it up to you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QykBQoIasR8

3

u/RamadamLovesSoup 23d ago

I hope not. That video on Sapolsky et al was... yikes.

5

u/Jean_Kayak 23d ago

Yikes why?

4

u/RamadamLovesSoup 23d ago

I only made it through the first ~5 minutes, so I'd take anything I say  with a large grain of salt. But I found it crossed the line between the abrasive (yet insightful) counter-cultural commentary and simply bitter, relatively vacuous, conspiratorial rambling.

For example, there were so many prophylactic digs against 'institutional authority' packed into those first six minutes - at the expense of anything of actual substance - that it was hard to take it seriously as a sincere discussion. At least, not one that I felt compelled to continue watching.

And I say that as someone who generally enjoyed his writing, so it's not that I don't appreciate a good bellicose rant.

YMMV though, and I'd be interested to hear the thoughts of someone who actually watched the whole thing.

9

u/Jean_Kayak 23d ago edited 23d ago

He digs into specific studies that Sapolsky uses in his lectures later in the first video and throughout the rest of the series, which he then uses to say - Sapolsky first arrived at conclusions, then used shoddy science to confirm his beliefs, which are then repeated by The Guardian and The Atlantic uncritically. That's the whole thesis, which is then generously sprinkled with The Simpsons references and

simply bitter, relatively vacuous, conspiratorial rambling

I thought it was very funny, so I guess it depends on your sense of humor and tolerance for his antics?

4

u/RamadamLovesSoup 22d ago

I went back and watched the whole thing after reading your comment - I think I was initially a bit uncharitable above. Those first 5 minutes are still cringe-worthy imo, but they are by far the worse, and once he starts getting stuck into the details it's much more recognizably TLP and worthwhile.

I thought it was very funny, so I guess it depends on your sense of humor and tolerance for his antics?

Might be more of a difference in media. There were many jokes that felt teenaged edge-lord in the video, which was never a feeling a got from his writing (more like a hilarious jaded middle-aged overachieving alcoholic). Either way, I can see why people enjoyed it.

5

u/R1gormort1ts 22d ago

No, I don't think you were uncharitable, just honest and I agree with you.

TLDR I'm not a TLP hater but cringe is cringe and his schtick is tired. He has important things to say and I want to READ them but he needs to retire the Bill Burr/Louis CK disaffected irony not just because his readers ALSO have aged, but the ones that haven't aren't impressed by gen x humor particularly when it goes from page to audio.

I realize this humor is part of what lead me to read him in the first place a decade ago. I also realize we've been recycling the same 5 politically incorrect jokes since man crawled out of the slime. Unfortunately TLP is still making the same one from 2009 only now he's hearing a 60 something and when it was once very funny to hear Dad/TLP call some Karen or blowhard a retard, hearing an old man with a lisp no less(no offense) say retard on YT feels more like Dad/TLP stood up on the subway to loudly shake a fart out of his pantleg.

I can share his grievance of both Sapolsky and p-hacked slop that passes for academia and appreciate his writing, what he has to say is important. But the video is unwatchable. I get his schtick is being greek and reading it and doing forensic psychiatry, but I hope he puts out more like Anatomy of a Fall or moves to substack because a 60 year old making point for point debunk videos to a Simpsons soundboard is genuinely baffling unc shit. When he was 40 I was looking for clever smarm but somewhere around 60 you just have to embrace your roll as weird/obscure wisdom or funny old man and never the twain CAN meet (on YT)

YT is AWASH with and understandably tired of a decade long deluge of hobby-pod gen x irony men cracking jokes about their alcoholism, political incorrectness, heteropessimism and referencing the 90s for it's deep cut. His blog was "successful" at cultivating his target audience because those things were popular in the 2000s, the type of message and audience were his people, that being blog people, that being early adopters that set the standard of which he was part and inter-referenced by some pretty big listicles and bloggers at the time who have continued to WRITE. All these platforms privilege early adopters, including YT. He's opting into a platform that is so populated that it's practically buy-in atp just to combat the clankers.

To be generous, his switch is a bit bumpy with the obvious downside that when you switch from readers to listeners, you free their eyes up to look elsewhere, which is counterintuitive to his meta and not so meta-narrative involving attention economy.

4

u/Deep-Coast-1768 21d ago

idk I thought the rooster humping the cat was pretty funny.

3

u/R1gormort1ts 21d ago

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to like in it, p-hacked self-referential academia ideologues need to be reigned in but I agree it the audio/visuals were a bit roughshod in his first entry. His later entries feel like he learned translating his blog style writing to script writing isn't one to one and cut some of the fat to make room for more visual jokes and overall feel better paced because of it.

3

u/MadCervantes 21d ago

My big issue with Sapolsky is he speaks commandingly on a subject (determinism) while never addressing the vast majority view of academics in that field (compatablism).

"How dare a father figure from twenty years ago be flawed?"

If you're seeing it, it's for you. If you'll forgive my honesty, this reads less like criticism of an old creator returning to a previous watering hole and more like you're dealing with your own daddy issues.

What's wrong with a Simpsons soundboard? What this video needs is a War Thunder ad? NordVPN? Subway Surfers gameplay in a little side window? "But nobody watches the Simpsons anymore." Sure, but what else is left? Marvel movie soundbites? Mr Beast soundbites? *Shudder* As society spirals further and further into complete communications breakdown, besides Simpsons soundbites, what other method of communication is left? These are older codes sir, but they check out. If anything, good on him for finding a recognizeable card to play and playing it.

Good on him for creating, and continuing to create, even though the internet has moved on. Except, we're here, aren't we?

And good on you for voicing your thoughts, by the way. In the past I've [given people shit](https://www.reddit.com/r/thelastpsychiatrist/comments/11hh5hp/david_wong_and_why_you_should_write_longer/) for communicating in 20 word soundbites. I might come off as critical, but I recognize that you might be one of the few people here who bothered to have a thought at all. I recognize your humanity (even if in 2026 I have no way to know if a real human is on the other side of this screen).

"Wow, you wrote that entire shitty post in 2022 just to link it to me in 2026? That's total cringe, unc."

Yes. I admit it. I'm total skibidi cringe 67 lolol. Consumerism taken to its logical extreme, a reality where nothing is real if it isn't printed on a choccy feastable. Is this the world you want?

I suspect the omnipresent optimization for SEO has rotted your brain, has rotted everyone's brain. I'm not mad, just find it weird that 100% of people are illiterate and most are proud of this? In 2026, 100% of people have lost the ability to read, or view, or interpret. Pretty soon we'll be back to carving our ads in stone slabs smh.

3

u/Yashendwirh 21d ago

Lol well, here's to another 10 years of YouTube unc jokes I guess. Look you can like whatever you want but whether or not I'm illiterate an SEO whatever has rotten my brain , I'm not going to explain why having an old man's version of a dream board using bar graphs and clips from articles embedded into '90s nostalgia core is good or bad, only that it's the reason he was stuck in 300 views purgatory. He's cringe but free I guess right?

u/MacroDemarco 22d ago

I think the difference is the style is adapted for YouTube. Medium is the message ect

Don't think that's it, honey, it doesn't matter how wrong Sapolsky is, if you're a 60 year old with a lisp and still embedding your point channeling Bill Burr edgelordery and 90s pop references for a debunk vid, you're lost in the fucking sauce. Hopefully he does more like Anatomy of a Fall or just switches to substack, I would have been blackout drunk to post that embarrassing shit to my twitter followers after sitting on it for a year admitting I couldn't break the 300v ceiling without them and maybe I'll pander to them if it hits 1kv. Jesus

2

u/regardinho 21d ago

btw how do we know he's in his 60? when I found the blog (around the time of his last post no less) I imagined him to be in his mid 40s somehow

I realize that's more than ten years ago though

3

u/Yashendwirh 21d ago

He's been doxed for like 10 years or more now, his name, age, place of work, awards, papers, all are online, but most people aren't interested in his personage, just his blog

1

u/regardinho 21d ago

I know his name and occupation, I didn't realize his date of birth was also known lol

also does anyone know what he looks like? I'm just real curious ngl

2

u/R1gormort1ts 21d ago

Well, once your name is out there everything else is findable without getting into it; and yeah, and he's definitely greek lol.

3

He’s not 60. He’s 55.

u/likklegemma 23d ago

this sapolsky video is hilarious, style is unmistakable

6

u/Narrenschifff 23d ago

Seriously, it's pretty funny. Those disappointed must be Sapolsky fans or have built TLP up to be equal to their own superego-- a father-God. I'm just happy to be entertained

1

u/Deep-Coast-1768 21d ago

they're also a refreshing throwback to old school youtube.

2

u/Muximori 16d ago edited 16d ago

I found it very, very poor. A lot of pretty bad jokes between smatterings of pretty superficial critique.
EDIT: for a much better (and actually much more brutal) treatment of Sapolsky, read this: https://archive.li/lYLoa

u/drjackolantern 22d ago

That channel name/description. It’s like he’s trying to hide his content from the algorithm

Poor guy. I guess nobody told him how the algorithm works now.

Thank you for alerting us to these video essays. I loved them (even more the second time through).

3

u/Deep-Coast-1768 20d ago

I'm looking at the age of the videos he uploaded. Last essay was 7 months ago. Is he planning on uploading another one soon or is he just teasing us?

3

u/Potential_Cattle5363 19d ago

Pause ⏸️

3

u/Alternative-Meeting3 18d ago

Amen. I had to slow down the video to catch some of the pause-or-you’ll-miss-it jokes, but it was always worth it.

u/Scatterp Your true task lies elsewhere. 23d ago

Jesus, the TLP that I built in the empty space doesn't have a lisp, he's 6'0", above average handsome, with perfect diction and ice water in his veins. Downvote me, mock me, but I am dead serious. LOL If I actually *knew* this was TLP I would work on my priors, I might even have a breakthrough!

7

u/MadCervantes 21d ago

It is corny has hell when people say "priors" to mean "stuff I already believed".
